Funeral services for Jessie Powell, 74, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, January 19, 2002 at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane, Texas.

Mrs. Powell will lie in state at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Visitation will be Friday, January 18 from noon until 8 p.m. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 in the chapel at Green’s Mortuary.

She was born to the union of Minerva Taylor and Daniel White on October 10, 1927 in Gainesmore, [Matagorda County] Texas. She passed away Friday, January 11, 2002 at the specialist Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston.

Many memories will always remain in the hearts of her loving daughter, Wilma “Jean” Gatson (J.D.) and adopted son Albert Powell and Sylvia of Kilgore, Texas; four granddaughters, Zucchini Thomas and Morris and Tammetrea Vaughn and Jeffery of Bay City, Jean Busby and Charles of Houston and Yattiska Gatson of Huntsville, Texas; three grandsons, Larry L. Thomas and Jacklyn of Jacksonville, Fla., Jayde Gatson and Karen of Bay City and Albert Jr. of Kilgore, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Rosie Lee Jones of Houston, two brothers, Kelly White of Houstoon, and Jerry White of Sacramento, California, one aunt-in-law, Dorothy Lee Taylor, 11 great grandchildren; Jessiera, Kandrane, Gilliam, Tyrell, LaCole, Wilmetta, K-Trell, Monika, Ikea, Ikla, and Chanell and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and other relatives and a family of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Minerva and Daniel White, husband Alexandra Powell, one sister Ruby Bree, and two brothers, Marshal and Andrew White. Active pallbearers will be members of the family.

Thelma Roberta Spiller Powell

Thelma Roberta Spiller Powell closed her eyes in her last sleep on Tuesday, March 11, 1997, at 11:20 p. m. in Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston.

While physically active, Mrs. Powell was a faithful member at West Point Baptist Church in Galveston where she served on the Usher Board and was a member of the Mission Circle. She also held membership in the Elks, Eastern Stars and Courts of Calanthe.

In 1995, at the end of a lengthy stay at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galveston, Mrs. Powell moved to Houston. She lived in Houston for nearly two years. Culminating her last stay in Memorial Southwest Hospital, the Lord took from her all pain and sorrow. We thank our heavenly Father for the life she lived among us, and for taking her to the land of Glory as He has promised to all the faithful.

Mrs. Powell leaves to mourn two sisters Nellie Brown and Phema Woodard of Cedar Lane; nephews Joe Dennis Brown of Cedar Lane, Enoch Brown, Jr. of Houston; five nieces Thelma L. Brossard, Gloria Brown, Rayola Cartwright of Houston, Ethel Ward of Cedar Lane, Barbara Akins of Harbor City, California, 10 great nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, March 15 at West Point Baptist Church at 3003 Avenue M in Galveston. The remains will be brought to Shiloh Baptist Church in Cedar Lane for Viewing and burial at 2 p. m. Saturday, March 15.

Christine was born on January 5, 1950 in Bay City, Texas to Mack Mangum and Sarah Grice Mangum and passed away peacefully on Friday, December 4, 2020 in Arcola, Texas surrounded by family.

Preceding Christine in death are her parents; one sister, Barbara Swannegan; and two brothers, Ben Mangum and I. J. Grice

Left to cherish memories are her daughter, Helen (Donnie) Times; son, Andre (Teri) Price; four sisters, Evelyn (Abraham) Jones, Janie Mae (Quinnon) Casey, Florence John, and Arlene Wilson; one brother, Henry (Patricia) Mangum Sr.; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Henry “Ricky” Rivera, 58, of Cedar Lane will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998 at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel, Rev. E. S. Fields will be officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane. Visitation will be Friday until 9 p. m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

Rivera was born in Key West, Fla. on Saturday, Feb. 3, 1940 to Joseph Rivera and Aida Ellis Rivera and died Friday, Sept. 25 at UTMB Hospital in Galveston. He grew up in the community of his birth where he attended public school. He was a good friend and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Rivera is survived by his adopted father, Alfonso Adams of Savannah, Ga.; step-mother, Arie Anna Harrison of Cedar Lane; step-sisters, Willie Marie Williams and James of Cedar Lane, Bertha Edison and Robert of Carrollton, and Linda Griggs and Mack of Houston; step-brothers, Howard Harrison and Dorothy of Santa Maria, Calif., and Bobby Adams of Key West; also a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, and other relatives, and a family of friends.

Pallbearers will be he Herman Johnson, George Spencer, Arthur Jackson, Howard Ross, Sr., James Williams and Dave Ward, Jr.

Rev. Carlyle Roberson Sr., 78, of Wadsworth died in Alvin June 11. Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Alonia Williams, Mrs. Eliza Merchant, Mrs. Vinella Fletcher, Mrs. Eva Mae Williams and Mrs. Mageline Barnes, all of Alvin; sons, Lee Andrew and Rev. Lee Andrew Roberson

Funeral services for Mr. Lee Andrew Roberson, Sr., 75, of Bay City, was held at 11 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

Roberson was born in Bay City, Texas, Nov. 17, 1921, to Carlyle Roberson and Harriett Henderson Roberson, and passed away Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, at the V. A. Hospital in Houston.

He was a member of Mother Zion Baptist Church where he served faithfully. Among his religious affiliations included his ordination as deacon in June, 1958, a member of the Pastor’s Aide, and one of the organizers of the Celestial Choir. His business involvement for many years was the much loved “Roberson’s Barbecue.”

Survivors include seven sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. James Roberson (Nina), Horace Roberson (Jean), Lee Roberson, Jr. (Nancy), Herbert Smith (Dorothy), Jim Smith (Dorothy Lee), Robert Smith (Margaret) and Floyd Smith (Mary). Also one sister, Mrs. Mary M. Barnes, and two brothers, Thomas Roberson, Sr. and Rev. Carlyle Roberson, Sr. Other survivors include 26 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorotherine Roberson, five sisters, Alonia Williams, Eliza Merchant, Vinella Fletcher, Eva Mae Williams and Almata Roberson, and one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Smith.

Active pallbearers were Horace Roberson, Jr., Ronnie Roberson, James Carl Roberson, Robert Smith, Jr., Roderick Smith, William Smith, Otis Smith and Labradford Smith. Honorary pallbearers will include Horace Laws, Hewitt Wiggins, Booker Holbert, Lloyd Jackson, Everett Gee and Benjamin Scott, Jr.

Funeral services for William Howard Ross Sr, 77, of Cedar Lane, Texas, will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cedar Lane, with the Rev. Michael Riddick II, eulogist.

Melvia Rouce
July 1, 1914 - October 28, 1990

On Wednesday, July 1, 1914, a baby girl was born to Mr. Phillip and Lousana Paige Sanford, in Cedar Lane, Matagorda County, Texas, whom they named Melvia (Chuppie). She attended Public School in Galveston, Texas.

She confessed Christ and was baptized under the pastorage of Joe Wrenn and there she became a member of Berean Baptist Church, Cedar Lane, Texas. Later in life she moved to Galveston, Texas and there she united with the West Point Baptist church. In 1942, she moved to Los Angeles, California and there she united with Tabernacle of Faith Baptist Church under the pastorage of Rev. F. Douglas Ferrell. Sister Rouce remained a very faithful member until she moved back to Texas in 1970, she then united with Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas under the pastorage of Rev. Lloyd Brown. She was a faithful member until her health began to fail.

In 1951, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Garland T. Rouce who preceded her in death.

Melvia was the mother of five children, two boys preceded her in death: Phillip and Robert Earl.

Her life came quietly to an end on October 28, 1990 at 11:30 p. m. in Daniel Freeman Hospital, Los Angeles, California. Her many memories will always remain in the hearts of her three precious daughters, Mrs. Ruby Lee Williams of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Barbara Jean Aikens of Harbor City, California, and Mrs. Ethel Lois Ward of Cedar Lane, two sons-in-law, Dave Ward, Jr. of Cedar Lane, and Elmer Aikens of Harbor City, California, one sister, Mrs. Mary Lee Gardenhire of Los Angeles, California, one brother, Matthew Stanford of Galveston, a very special cousin, Mrs. Phema Woodard of Cedar Lane, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Emma Dora Stanford of Galveston and one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bobby Johnson of Cedar Lane, 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, a number of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends, who loved her and affectionately called her “Mama Chuppie” and “Chu Chu.”

Alice M. Sidney
December 18, 1910 – November 24, 2005

Alice M. Sidney was a native of Cedar Lane, Texas, a small community located east of Bay City, Texas.

Alice graduated from Jack Yates High School in 1936. Her higher education was received at Prairie View A & M University and Texas Southern University respectively. The latter university awarded her the M. Ed. Degree.

Alice was united in matrimony to Nelson Sidney in 1939.

Alice entered the field of teacher as teacher/principal of China Grove Elementary School in Rosharon, Texas. Upon bringing her skills as an educator to the Houston Independents School District, she was assigned to Sanderson Elementary and later to B. H. Grimes Elementary where she served as principal. Alice molded the lives and nurtured the hopes and aspirations of thousand of boys and girls during twenty-one (21) years of service as dedicated teacher and fourteen (14) years as a principal.

In her role as principal, she established and maintained a commendable relationship with students, parents, co-workers, and community leaders. In 1974, she retired with thirty-five years of dedicated service in the teaching and guidance of children.

Alice’s affiliations with fraternal organizations are varied. She brought to this arena the same fervor and dedication, which she contributed to that of education. For more than 50 years, she served as treasurer of Electa Chapter #432 Order of the Eastern Star, Miriam Court #120, Kora Court #95 and past president of Houston Masonic Lodges and Chapters Travel Club.

Alice served as Grand Queen Mother of the Masonic Youth Society of M. W. St. Joseph Grand Lodge and Mount Olive Grand Chapter. Her many years of outstanding service as Supreme Directress of the Johnson Education Department will be long remembered. Locally, she served as treasurer of the Louis J. Brown, Carl Walker, Jr., and the Edward L. Edmond Scholarship Funds.

In addition to her fraternal affiliations, Alice was active in her community. She was a past member of the Administrative Board of Directors of the YWCA; Century Club of the YWCA; member of American Association of Retired Persons; National Retired Teachers Association; Life Member of Houston Principals Association; and member of the Missouri City Top Ladies of Distinction.

Alice was a loyal and dedicated servant in her church where she served as president of Mary L. Price Circle of Mission #2; second vice-president of General Mission #2; treasurer of the Deaconess Board; financial secretary of Mission #2 Ministry of Lincoln District Association. Alice will be long remembered as a dedicated and faithful member of Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Alice was the recipient of many awards and honors for outstanding service to humanity. The Electa Chapter #432 OES established a scholarship in her honor in 2003.

She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 38 years, Nelson Sidney; parents, mother, Ada Hunderson; father, Ellison Hawkins; stepfather, Roscoe Henderson; one sister; Rosie Lee Faust; two brothers; K. C. and Eddie Stanford; stepdaughter, Dorothy Duneghy.

She leaves to forever cherish her memories:  a devoted niece, Dorothy DeVaughn (Johnnie) and a devoted cousin, Thomasine Allen; brothers-in-law, Henry Faust and Carlos Sidney; sister-in-law, Maudrine Fields, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Alice Mae Sidney, 69, of Bay City, are scheduled for 11 a. m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cedar Lane with the Rev. C. W. Floyd officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel and from 10 to 11 a. m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mrs. Sidney was born July 26, 1924, in Bay City to Phillip and Wilkie Franklin Edison and died May 23, 1994, in Matagorda General Hospital.

She was a member of the Baptist church, the Lincoln Southern District Association, the Order of Eastern Star and the Courts of Calanthe.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Alex Coleman Sidney Jr. of Bay City; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Daisy Louise and John Davis of Dallas, Barbara Jean and Dr. Morris McDonald, Ethel Gladys and Johnnie Batties, Margaret Marideth Sidney and Sherlyn Sidney Jackson all of Bay City; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Don Ray Sidney of Bay City, Alex and Vicki Sue Sidney III and Bruce Wayne and Darnell Sidney, all of Van Vleck; 10 grandchildren, Terence Vaughn Sidney, John Alexander Murray, Adrain Edward Murray, Anaca Michelle Davis, Natasha Nichole Sidney, Alexis Victoria Sidney, Lowell Kent Davis, Fallyn Salicia Sidney, Alex Carlos Sidney IV and Ezra Charles Sidney; a great-grandson; Jalen Sidney; a brother, Gifford Edison of Brazoria; an aunt, Helen Edison of Bay City; seven sisters-in-law, Gertrude Edison and Carrie Edison, both of Live Oak, Beatrice Edison of Brazoria, Ada Edison of Texas City, Maudarine Fields of Cedar Lane, Alice Sidney of Houston and Delores Sidney of Galveston; three brothers-in-law, Carlos Sidney of Campton, Melvin Sidney of Galveston, the Rev. Alice Mae Griggs Sidney

Funeral services for Alice Mae Sidney, 78, of Cedar Lane, will be held Saturday, November 1, 2003, at 2 p. m., Shiloh Baptist Church in Cedar Lane, with the Rev. Steven State, pastor, and the Rev. Murray Griggs, Sr. eulogist. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 3 until 9 p. m. in the funeral home chapel.

She was born in Cedar Lane, Thursday, April 30, 1925, to Ira Griggs and Nealie Tone Griggs, and was called to rest to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 25, 2003, at her residence in Cedar Lane.

Survivors include: one son, Robert Edison and Bertha of Carrollton, Texas; her mother, Nealie Tone Griggs of Cedar Lane; two sisters, Mary Jane Griggs of Galveston, and Louise Johnson of LaMarque, and three brothers, Dennis Griggs of Cedar Lane, Jimmie Griggs of Houston, and Albert Griggs of Maryland; also four grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-grands, a host of other relatives and friends.
