About the 15th a cold wave hit, leaving thousands of dollars in damages and several people injured. Mrs Jim Harvey
and M M O'Rear were two of the injuries......Mr. O'Rear died several weeks later due to his injuries.The Nicholson Cafe on the Ivie lot in Emory burned.
Humble Oil Co was drilling the #1 Easter well.
Rains Co's Red Cross was raising money to help flood victims along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Kathleen Hill was
the County Chairman.Chamber of Commerce was organized during February with Judge Joel Lennon as temporary chairman. Herman Hall
was elected President; H O Pennal - Vice-Pres; J A Amis, Jr - Sec-Treas. Entertainment Committee was Cecil Horton,
Kathleen Hill, and Frank Alexander.Emory High School FFA members advancing from Green Hands to Future Farmer during late spring were: Tommy Glass,
Joe Ben Fleming, Daniel Mainard, Howard Rhodes, J D Garrett, Brice Moody, Leon Asbill, Delbert Harrison,
Wilbur Pound, Cnnie Kilgore, Joe Bob Chastain, Ralph Hays and Billie Morris.A charter was granted by the State of Texas to the Point Co-op Gin.....Directors were: W H Pippin, F R Gorman,
J E Kennemer, J W Warren, J B Cason, R R Young, Will A Harris (Harris was later names manager, and his place
was filled by Will T Lee).Community Public Service, the local electric company was offering homemakers a $1 for their old irons on the puchase
of a new "automatic electric iron", selling for $6.95.The Emory Kittens, with Coach Mrs Sam Braziel, captured the Girls State Basketball title....two of the guards were
Glenna Johnston and Fay Nell Woodson.
Tom W Hill, Rains County Leader editor, died in March after more than 30 years ownership.Baby chicks were being offered for sale at local feed stores for $7.00 a hundred.
H R Ivie Store had dresses on sale for $1.49 and $2.95 for Easter.
During the middle of March.....heavy winds tore off barn roofs and detroyed a number of outhouses.
Edward Brothers had grand opening sale offering---ladies houseshoes at 44 cents; men's leather workshoes at $1.79;
boys little brother overalls for 89 cents; thick school tablets were 3 for 5 cents; horse collars were 95 cents; #2 washtubs
were 65 cents and wash tubs were 35 cents.Emory School Trustees elected in 1937 E O Disman and W T Posey.
Nabors Drug Store advertised "walking sundaes" for 10 cents.
In June a marriage license was issued to Roosevelt Luke and Eldora Murry.
The WPA opened a sewing room in Emory.
A box supper and graveyard working at Smyrna were on the front page.
Misses Estelle and Ruth Arrington were featured on W Lee O'Daniel's WFAA radio program.
80 local men were employed by the State Highway Dept. at 35 cents an hour.
County Board of Education included Frank Lynch, Jim McBride, W B Sypert, Oscar Blanton and Ross Harbison.
There was no Rains County Fair that year.
Sheriff Gus Orsborn, Jr and Texas Rangers captured two men who robbed an Alba store at gunpoint and stole $7.00.
In August, Joe Ben Fleming, Henry McLeod, Ray Cannon, Looney Fletcher and William Cooke attended National
Guard encampment at Palacious.Nell's Eat Shop was advertising chicken dinners for 25 cents and milk shakes for 5 cents.
J H Sisk was trying to sell 12 Rhode Island Cocks for $1.00 each.
Letters to Santa included were from Emma Lee Nabors, Ivan Alexander, Jr and Doris Louise Sttle.
