Rains Co.TX Attempted Robbery of Post Office Foiled or Crime Doesn't Pay in Point The Rains County Leader
May 9, 1913About 3 o'clock Satuday morning Grandpa Wilson discovered a light in the post office at Point and arouse
Constable Will Thornton, who sleeps about 30 yards from the post office, and he went out on the gallery
and challenged the intruder. In one or two minutes someone appeared in front of the building and told
Thornton to go back in the house or he would blow him and his family up. Mr Thornton went back in the
room and got a pistol and fired twice at the miscreant but he fled North and has not yet been located.
Upon investigation it was found that everything was in readiness to blow up the post office safe, and that
the robbery was barely prevented. He left some caps and fuse, and a blue bandana handkerchief, and a
syringe. The post office safe contained about a $101.00. About $6 or $8 worth of stamps and a pistol
were the only things missing. Postmaster Guinn says he cannot find any use for the caps, fuse, syringe and
the bandana handkerchief and the owner may have same by calling in person for them.
