No records found in the US with the name VonAlthauser
He served 18 months in the Continental Army under Captain
Wallace and General Green, and was in Yorktown during the surrender of
Cornwallis, though he did not
attend due to severe illness. (Pension Records)
Dutch Reformed Church Records:
He was the son of Johann Peter Althauser and Lisabetha
Catherina Lauck, who immigrated into NY from Germany in the early to
mid-1700's.
There were several Lauck's in
the registers, but only one Althauser family.
Dutch Reformed Church records Emera's known siblings:
*Catherina, born Germany, no baptismal record, married
Nicolass Dinckelbach 10 Apr 1750.
*Christopher, born Germany, no baptismal record, married,
one child, one grandchild listed.
*Eva, born Germany, no baptismal record, married Jacobus
Proper, 3 children listed.
*Anna, baptized 8 Jan 1744, born NY.
*Wilhelm, baptized 2 Mar 1746, born NY.
*Maritgen, baptized 2 Feb 1748, born NY.
*Emerich, baptized 8 Apr 1749, born NY.
*Heinrich, baptized 8 Apr 1749, born NY.
{Emerich and Heinrich were baptized on the same day, it
could be assumed they may have been twins, but there is no evidence other
than the coincidence of the baptismal day. Due to the high infant mortality
rates, and the custom of the church, infants were usually baptized within a
few days of their births}

Settled in Montgomery County VA in 1789 (Pension Records)
Children of Maria Pitzer:
John Altizer b: 1765 in VA.
Elias ALTIZER b: 1769 in VA.(emigrated to Posey Co IL)
Emera "Emery" ALTIZER b: 1771 in VA.
(Anna Maria Pitzer died shortly after the birth of Emera

Children of Mary Miller:
William Altizer b: 1781 Rockingham Co VA (em. Posey Co IL)

Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" ALTIZER b: 09 SEP 1786 in
VA
Nancy ALTIZER b: 1790 in Montgomery Co., VA
Jonas ALTIZER b: 1793 in Montgomery Co., VA
(Emera and Mary were married 1773, and first known child
born 1781, for a lapse of 8 years, there may have been other children
born/died without records. There is a George "Athous" m the widow
Mary Tutwiller in Rockingham Co in 1804, no ages or family info given,
could this be a brother, son, or nephew of Emera??)
So, Emera was not "kidnapped for a ship's
mate", nor was he the "first and only Altizer to come to the
US", and probably not "every US Altizer descends from
Emera", as there were at least 3 brothers.
There is much new information that has surfaced, thanks
to internet records and releases of newly discovered information. Much of
what has previously been recorded has been mistaken due to incomplete or missing records, erred assumptions, or family stories handed down that
have proven to be false.

Jonas Altizer, s/o Emera & 2nd

1st m. 1819 Montgomery,
Sarah “Sally” Ratcliffe, d/o Nathan & Martha (Farmer) Ratcliffe.
2nd m. 1860 Montgomery,
Sarah Simpkins, d/o Robert & Elizabeth (Duncan) Simpkins.
Note on FAG:
Jonas Altizer is the son of Emera
Altizer (1736–1819 and his wife Mary Miller (1759-1850). He married Sarah
"Sally" Radcliffe on 28 August 1819 in Montgomery County. She and
Jonas had at least six children: Sarah Altizer (1820–1821); Martha Patricia
Altizer (1822–1872); Sophia Evaline Altizer (1823–1907; William Ratcliffe
Altizer (1826– 1863): Russell Ratcliff Altizer (1828–1877; and John
Ratcliffe Altizer (1830–1900). Jonas later fathered three additional
children, apparently with a mistress Mrs. Sarah Simpkins (1820-1887 (Maiden
name possibly Baldwin), the widow of poor Mr. Simpkins who died about 1850.
These children are Julia Ann Altizer (1852–1920); Woodrow Wilson Altizer
(1854–1938); and Elizabeth "Betty" Altizer (1857–1919. Recently
discovered records show Jonas did marry Mrs. Sarah Simpkins in
Christiansburg on 1 March 1860, after his first wife died. For the next
year, the homestead was rather busy, for Mrs. Simpkins also had the
children of her previous marriage come visiting, which were sometimes
thought of, as "Altizers", and,
according to some family trees, actually later adopted as
"Altizers", although I have heard on no such record. These
children are Mary E Simpkins (1842–1917; Octavia L "Francis"
Simpkins (1845–1922); Rachael Simpkins (1847–?); and Malinda E "Nan or
Nannie" Simpkins (1849–?). Jonas died in 1861 and was buried here,
alongside his first wife Sarah, according to Ruby Altizer Roberts and Rosa
Altizer Bray (Both Altizer Historians), in the lower end of the Altizer
Cemetery with only the rock to permanently mark their grave.
