Dorothy
M. Argabright, 88, of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2015.
She was a very proud driver of an HRT transit bus in Norfolk, where she
retired after 25 years of honorable service. Dorothy was born and raised in
Copper Hill and will be laid to rest on the mountains that she adored her
whole life. She was a dedicated, devout, and loving mother. She was
preceded in death by one sister, Cornelia Smith, and three brothers, Basil
Williams, Reynold Williams, and Glen Williams.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn Hatcher and her husband, Micky,
and Barry Argabright and his wife, Nadine; grandchildren, Brian Argabright
and Elizabeth Hatcher; sisters, Claudine Wimmer, Freeda Wimmer, and Yvonne
Smith and her husband, Homer; brother, Wilson Williams; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at
Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. Interment will follow at Copper Hill
Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 13, 2015,
from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel,

Phyllis Wilson Barkheimer, 81, of
Roanoke City, Va., passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2015.
A beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Phyllis was born in Floyd
County, and had been a local resident most of her life. Her last working
years she enjoyed volunteering at LOA Adult Care.
Her parents, Jim and Ethel Wilson of Copper Hill; sister, Agnes Church of
Roanoke; son, Jeffrey Barkheimer; and daughter, Patricia Hill of Salem,
preceded her in death. (also infant, Robert
Lewis Barkheimer, 1958, 1 do – buried HofRiver, Floyd) She is
survived by her son, Gary Barkheimer and partner, James Farmer of Roanoke;
her dear son-in-law, Richard Hill of Salem; and grandsons, Joshua Hill and
Jason Barkheimer; and granddaughter, Brandy Barkheimer. She also had
numerous great-grandchildren. She was the sister of Paul (Pat) Wilson and
wife, Peggy Wilson, of Rocky Mount, and James (Mike) Wilson and wife, Peggy
Wilson, of Wirtz. Phyllis will also be missed by her faithful granddog,
Louie.
The family would like to take this time to thank her special cousin, Shelby
Mowles of Roanoke, and her close friends, Elizabeth Stone of Floyd, Helen
"Yaya" Asimakopoulos of Roanoke, Denise Campbell of Roanoke,
Sylvia Shortt of Roanoke, and Cyndy Brown of Lynchburg, for their dear
friendships. Phyllis we love you and will miss you greatly.
Family visitation will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue
on Sunday, February 22, 2015, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Her
Funeral Services will be held at the same location on Monday, February 23,
2015, at noon with Pastor Branan Thompson Jr. will officiate. The family
will be receiving guests at their home located at 3931 Richland Avenue, NW

He was the son of Ryland (Whitey)
and Pat Barton, of Copper Hill, Va., and Sharon and Tom Poey, of Roanoke.
He was the special godson of
Virginia Boley, of Roanoke, Va.
He is also survived by his wife,
Jennifer; and daughter, Ashleigh Elizabeth, of Salem, Va.; his brothers and
sisters, Tony, Scott, Jennifer, and David Register, and Karen Leigh Barton;
his grandmother, Jan O'Connell, of Salem, Va.; his aunts and uncles, Bill
and Mark O'Connell, Mary L. (Missy) Martin, of Hendersonville, N.C., Galen
M. Munsey and wife, Dawn, of Salem, Va.; cousins, Stephanie Jordan
O'Connell, Ethan Mark O'Connell, Rebekah Leigh O'Connell, Eric Joseph
O'Connell, Austin Ezra O'Connell, Aaron Ware O'Connell, Rachel Lee
O'Connell, Kiley Eden O'Connell, William Kyle Martin, Brandi Lee Martin,
Brent and Candy Munsey; and his best friend and military brother, Harold
Garcia. Preceding Adam in death was his paternal grandmother, Edith Barton;
and maternal great-grandmother who helped raise him, Mary Lee Smith Munsey.
Adam was a veteran of the United States Army, serving two tours in
Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was a realtor and partner in Roanoke Valley
Homes with Tim Hogan, and owner of ACB Properties. The family would like to
thank the loving and caring staff of MICU at Lewis Gale Hospital. Their
delivery of compassionate care was exceptional. Also, appreciation from the
family to the staff of Life Net for their compassionate and caring way of
facilitating organ donation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that
memorials be made to the Salvation Army. A private memorial service will be
held for immediate family members by Pastor Marty Moyer, of Copper Hill
Church of the Brethren, on Thursday December 30, 2010. Condolences may be

Copper Hill, died on Friday, February 10, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Lilley and son, Adam
Barton. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Patricia Barton, children, Tony
and Christine Register, Scott Register, Keith and Jennifer Lubinski, David
and Erin Register, and his longtime friend and business partner Gabino
Rueda.
Whitey was a U. S. Air Force veteran, he was a passionate cook and small
restaurant owner and known for his produce markets all over town. He had an
avid love for dogs and children.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at
Copper Hill Church of the Brethren with Pastor Dan Johnson officiating.
Inurnment will follow in Copper Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery. The
family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM at
Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to

Joyce Ann Craighead Janney Bayse, 82, of Copper Hill passed away at home
with her children by her side on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. She was born
on September 14, 1936 to the late Frank and Mae Craighead. In addition to
her parents she is preceded in death by her first husband, Harris Janney;
her second husband, Jewell F. Bayse, III; daughter, Lisa Puckett; grandson,
Wesley Igoe.
She is survived by her children, Steve Janney, Jerry “Petie” Janney (Brenda),
Darrell Craighead, Tammie Sowers (Ronald), Bonnie Igoe, Don Bayse (Joyce),
Pat Leonard (Mike); 15 grandchildren, Eric Janney, Jason Janney, Jeremy
Janney, Brittany Atkinson, Joey Craighead, Leslie Craighead, Tabitha
Gardner, Barry Sledd, Jr., Cory Sledd, Sr., Rob Igoe, Kelsey Lane, Taylor
Bayse, Nathan Puckett, Wesley Mitchell Puckett, Marc Leonard; twenty-two
great grandchildren; sisters, Lorrine “Flippy” Sowder, Earlean Shortt;
brother, Harry Craighead (Joyce).
Joyce was a member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. She was a
wonderful mother to everyone and would do for others before herself. Joyce
retired from Halmode after 35 years and she worked hard and loved with all
her heart.
She loved to travel to the beach with the family, loved her flowers and
keep her yard nice and neat. Joyce enjoyed bluegrass music, flat footing,
cooking and family days at the lake. She enjoyed to sit in the rocking
chair on the front porch and looking at God’s beautiful work. Joyce liked
to watch Hokie Football and NASCAR Racing.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018
at Oakey’s South Chapel with the Rev. Greg Fleshman and Rev. Jay Law
officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Jewell Farmer Bayse III, 83, of
Copper Hill, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 22, 2009.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jewell Farmer Bayse II; mother, Mary
Widdifield; daughter, Lisa Bayse Puckett; and grandson, Wesley R. Igo. Mr.
Bayse was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, where he served as a
deacon. He served in World War II in the United States Marines as a private
first class, member of the VFW, Master Mason Pleasants Lodge #63, Brother
of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA, American Legion-Floyd; former Roanoke
City police officer; and retired USPS Letter Carrier. He was a devoted,
wonderful and loving husband to Joyce A. Bayse; the best and loving father
to all the children, Bonnie Igo and husband, George, Don Bayse and wife,
Joyce, Pat Leonard and husband, Mike, Steve Janney, Jerry Janney and wife,
Brenda, Darrell Craighead and wife, Missy, and Tammie Sowers and husband,
Ronald; a wonderful Paw-Paw to 14 grandchildren, Rob Igo, Taylor and Kelsey
Bayse, CW3 Barry Sledd, Cory Sledd, Nathan and Mitch Puckett, Eric Janney,
Jason, Jeremy and Brittany Janney, Joey and Leslie Craighead, Tabitha
Sowers, and Mark Leonard. He was a special great-grandpa to 15
greatgrandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Margaret Gordon and Frances
Kingery; his special puppy, Tippie, who was on his lap to the end; and his
kitty cat, Donut. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff
of the 8th and 10th floors at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for all of
their care. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 26,
2009, at Oakey's South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke, with the Rev.
Greg Mills officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Blue
Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Oakey's ROANOKE
Chapel, 318 Church Ave., Roanoke, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 25,

Aug. 31, 2004. Born in Roanoke, Va. on Oct. 6, 1950, he was the son of the
late Irby and Maryleen Carr. Mr. Carr served in the U.S Army and was a
correctional officer for 16 years with the Mecklenburg Institution, Unit 4 and
Unit 23 and currently with St. Bridges Correctional Center.
He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Gladys P. Carr of Virginia
Beach; daughter, Sherry; brother, Carley Lee Carr and wife Alice of
Roanoke, Va.; stepchildren, Monica Shelton and husband Jamie, Maria Urueta,
Mercedes Farmer, Marina Urueta, Martha Urueta and Enrique Eduardo Urueta;
and step grandchildren, Fallon and Kimberly Farmer and Jamie Leigh Shelton.
Services will be private. Memorial contributions in Barry’s name may be
made to the DAV Virginia Beach Chapter 20 Inc., 4896 Kempsville Greens
Parkway, Virginia Beach, VA 23462-6428.

The passing of Florence Beckner
Carr (Copper Hill, Virginia) leaves a void in the hearts of many, as we bid
farewell to a loving soul who departed on July 10, 2025 at the age of 91.
She was predeceased by: her
parents, Noah Isaac and Mamie Grant Beckner; and her siblings, Colonel
Beckner, Golden Beckner, Marvin Beckner, Pheroey Smith, Shelton Beckner and
Joe Beckner.
She is survived by: her sons,
Calvin Carr (Dianne) and Dale Carr (Sheila); her grandsons, Justin and
Kevin Carr; her great grandchildren, James, Jessica, Jordan and Jacob Carr;
and her brother Gary Beckner (Gladys). She is also survived by several
nieces and nephews.

James E. Conner, Jr., 75, of Riner,
passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2019. He was preceded in death by his
parents, James Conner, Sr. and wife Ruby.
Growing up in Floyd County James attended Check High School. After
graduation he worked at Kroger in Salem for 33 years. Following a brief
retirement from Kroger, James went back to work as a valet at Carilion in
the New River Valley for five years. James was a loyal and passionate fan
of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Vikings, Virginia Cavaliers athletics,
and Jeff Gordon racing. In his spare time James enjoyed gardening, canning
food, and going on 4-wheeling trips to West Virginia with his friends.
James is survived by his wife of 17 years, Linda Hoosier; daughter, Cindy
Conner; son, Jeff Conner; stepchildren, Sharon Wright, Stephen Wiley, and
Suzanne Wiley; grandchildren, Allen and Adam Conner, Amber Dalton, Dustin
McClure, Matthew and Bethany LaPrade, Shelley and Shane Wright, and Claire
and Emma Wiley; great-grandchildren, Brayden and Mila LaPrade, and Camden
Conner; and long-time friends, Doug Westmoreland, Brenda Horne, and Jimmy,
Sarah, Landon, and Ava Marrs.
A funeral service will be held at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren at
11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2019 with Pastor Dan Johnson
officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey’s South Chapel on
Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in James’s memory.

 Westley “Donald” Rayford Grant, born June 12,
1951, father, widower, lover of life, a determined and free-spirited man of
God passed away on Monday, August 2, 2021, at 12:01 p.m.
He
had many activities he enjoyed over the years, such as hunting, fishing,
boating, riding motorcycles, and driving fast cars. He was a hardworking,
multi-talented person, experienced in farming, building homes, and fixing
cars. He worked many years as a mechanic for Norfolk Southern Railway in
Virginia and retired as an engineer for TTI Railroad in Kentucky.
Westley
was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Euard Grant; father, Freddie Joe
Grant; mother, Cherry Grant; siblings, Margaret Simmons, Charles Grant,
Evelyn McLaughlin, Leon Grant, Ralph Grant, Dave Grant, Freddie Grant,
Cherry Ella Grant, Ulysses Grant, and Eldridge Grant.
He
is survived by his daughters, Harriet, Ava, and Ashley, and his
grandchildren, Ashton and Isabella. He is also survived by his siblings,
Dinnah, May Frances, Clara, Cheryl, “Ollie” Elsie, and Mark; and a host of
nieces and nephews.
A
public viewing will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2021, from 1 p.m. to 5
p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home & Crematory. Condolences may be sent
to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.
 Sylvia Grubb Grant, 56, of Roanoke County, went to be with her Lord on
Thursday morning, June 12, 2008, at her mother's home. Sylvia was a
graduate of Radford University with a BS in math and statistics and had
taught junior high school for 12 years in Fauquier County. She was employed
by Verizon until her illness and was a long time member of Poages Mill
Church of the Brethren. Sylvia was vice president of the Cave Spring Rescue
Squad Auxiliary and was preceded in death by her father, Glenn Marshall Grubb.
Surviving is her husband, Westley R. (Donald) Grant; her daughter, Ashley
Grant; her grandson, Ashton Phoenix Grant; stepdaughters, Marlene and Ava
Coles; her mother, Sallie Sloan Grubb, of Roanoke County; her sister and
brotherin-law, Glenda Gail and Randy Patsel, of Roanoke County; a nephew,
Trey Patsel; special aunt, Betty Jedlicka and husband, Tex, of Koshkonong,
Mo.; special uncle, Charlie W. (Sonny) Sloan Jr. and wife, Teresa, of
Vinton; half sister, Charlotte Chemavonian, of Millbray, Calif.; specials
friends, Kathy Lester and Mary Wills; and numerous friends and family
members. A funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008,
at Oakey's South Chapel with Pastor E.B. Shoemaker and the Rev. Bill
Mitchell officiating. Interment in Copper Hill Cemetery, Floyd County. The
family would like to thank Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the doctors
and nurses, for all their loving care and concern for Sylvia during her
illness and also Larry Jones, with Carilion Hospice, for his loving care.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 13, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m.
and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.
Sister, you are so special to me, even though your housekeeping skills
drive me crazy, you were a special Lady, willing to help anyone who needed
it, family, friend or neighbor. The mother you were to Ashley was amazing.
We have always shared a special bond that I will never forget. I will love
and miss you always, but I know you are now free and at peace.

sisters, Mary Marshall, Dulcie Parmele, Zula Henry, Mattie Johnson and
Grace Largen. Survivors include daughter, Elizabeth Henry Austin Stone of
Copper Hill, Va.; son, Frank Henry, Jr. (Sonny) of Roanoke, Va.;
granddaughters, Cheryl Austin of Roanoke, Va., Sonya Austin of Shawsville,
Va.; grandsons, Ronald Austin of Dallas, Texas, Michael Henry and wife,
Laura of Minneola, Fla., Scott Henry and wife, Julie of Lovettsville, Va.;
great-granddaughters, Hannah Austin-Grantham (special), Alden Henry, Abby
Henry, Alison Henry, Katylin Henry; great-grandsons, Matthew Henry,

nephews and numerous friends. A special friend, Thelma Eisenlohr and her
children, Mary Webb and Glenna Vest and family. Frank was retired from
American Bridge Company and after an early retirement he then did what he
enjoyed most and that was farming. He was also a partner in Black &
White Paving Company (now S & S Paving Company). Frank was a charter
member of Faith Chapel Baptist Church and was attending Sowder's Chapel
Baptist Church at the time his health began to decline. Funeral services
will be held Friday, January 13, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Maberry Funeral Home
Chapel with Pastor Ben Whitaker officiating. Interment will follow at
Copper Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9
p.m. at Maberry Funeral Home. His family would like to thank the New River
Valley Agency on Aging and Angie Manning for their help during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New River Valley Agency on
Aging (Respite Program) or Good Samaritan Hospice or the charity of your
choice.

Lynn Hires, 66, Ozawkie, KS., died Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at her home
in Ozawkie. She was born September 27, 1944 at Tinker Field, Oklahoma, the
daughter of Kenneth Dell and Marjorie F. Spiller Olson. She was a 1962
graduate of Abilene, KS., High School and attended Kansas State University.
She earned B.S. degree in Social Sciences from the university of
Binghamton, New York. She had lived in Ozawkie 12 years after moving from
Apalachin, New York. Carol had worked as a Dental Hygienist and as a Caseworker
for the New York Division of Youth. She was a member of the Ozawkie Way of
The Cross United Methodist Church and was a longtime volunteer and member
of the Friends of the Oskaloosa Public Library in Oskaloosa, KS. Carol was
married to Albert "Al" P. Hires on October 11, 1969 at Abilene,
he survives at the home in Ozawkie. She is also survived by her Mother,
Marjorie F. Olson, Abilene, KS., one daughter, Kimberly "Kim"
(Dan) Smith, Copper Hill, VA., one brother, Gary D. Olson, DVM., Lawrence,
KS., and two grandchildren, Abby Rose Smith and Tegen Daniel Smith, both of
Copper Hill, VA. She was preceded in death by her Father, Kenneth Olson. A
Memorial Celebration of Life will be at 2:30 PM, Sunday, January 16 at
Ozawkie Way of The Cross United Methodist Church. Cremation is planned.
Inurnment will be at a later date at Copper Hill Cemetery, Copper Hill, VA.
