Oscar Wiley, former surgeon of the 54th VA Regt. stated in Samuel Wickham's 1904 pension application: "that he was a gallant Soldier in Co. A, 54th Va. Regt. & always did his duty cheerfully & with alacrity & even joyously, was captured at Resaca, Georgia 15th May 1864 while leading his company in a charge." Samuel stated that he was captured in 1864 and held at Rock Island prison until surrender; and that he was wounded by a shot ball to the head in 1864.
