NOTE:
Many thanks to Uncle Paul McNeil whose research allowed me to make many
of these connections.
I have used the spelling of “McNiel”
throughout because that is the spelling on the tombstones, although Grandpa and
Grandma (Benton and Florence) usually spelled it “McNeil”. I know Uncle Johnny preferred “McNeil” and
that’s what I ordered for his tombstone.
When Uncle Johnny McNeil died in 2008,
there were about 66 acres left of the 1200 acres that his great-grandfather
Jacob McNiel, Jr. purchased in 1838.
Based on family records, the earliest grave in the cemetery is that of
Celesta McNeil in 1852 (see #14); however, the oldest grave may be that of Mary
McNiel (see #15); records indicate that she was born between her brother
William Burrell (1823) and her brother Samuel (1832).
