Rector School
Township of Abrams

Written and contributed by: Bob Reim

Rector School was located about three miles south of Knowles School and one-half mile south of the German Methodist Church,  at the NW corner of what is today the intersection of County D/Sampson Road and Sandalwood Road in Abrams Township.  It was built by a Mr Wolski on farmland given by William Rector sometime before 1887, hence the name Rector School.   Plat maps of 1898, 1905 and 1912 show the school in Section 32 Township 27 Range 20 on land owned by  Reinhold Reim who purchased the Rector farm in Nov 1887.   Rector School was a white, one-room schoolhouse with grades 1 – 8.  There was a flag pole in the yard and a well on property.  Everyday, the boys carried in water and put it in a stone drinking bubbler.  In winter, boys brought in wood to fire the huge stove to heat the schoolroom.  In 1943, Rector School was closed and torn down and the land reverted to the Reim farm.  Students were transferred to the Abrams School and rural bus transportation became available.

This photograph is quite clear in classroom details, including the photo of Teddy Roosevelt on the wall, the stone water container at the back of the room, the oil lamp and reflector on the right window and a piece of firewood on the bench in the back corner.  Also most of the students have been identified.  My parents, grandparents and their siblings all attended this school between 1890 - 1940.  To my knowledge, it's the only existing photo of Rector School.  Bob Reim
