Mamie Katherine Dalton, 89, of Ararat, died Friday, January 15, 2010, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

She was born on August 5, 1920 in Mount Airy, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Ellis Smith and Emma Anderson Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Alfred Dalton; a sister, Maggie Smith; two brothers, Henry and Preston Smith; a half sister, Pearl Gentry; a half brother, Joe Smith; three infant daughters; two grandsons; one great-grandson; four stepsons; and four stepdaughters.

Surviving are six daughters, Frances Casey of Charlotte Court House, Betty Lane of Stuart, Gloria Bowman and husband Jeff of Claudville, Reva Pierce and husband James of Claudville, Connie Lamb of Albertville, Ala., and Violet "Tina" Abbott of Mount Airy; one son, Charles "Bucky" Dalton of Claudville; three stepdaughters, Mary Elkin of Dublin, Wilma Ardner of Mount Airy and Lois Saad of Pulaski; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Wilburn Smith and wife Lucy of Salem; and one sister-in-law, Louise Smith of Ararat.
Burial was in the United Church Cemetery Published in The Enterprise of Patrick Co. VA
