Anthony Minter

Submitted by Dennis Minter

Anthony Minter was bound to John Metcalf, Jr., stonemason, in 1784 in Fauquier County. He appeared on the Personal Property Tax list for the first time in 1787 in John Metcalf's household, and was indicated as between 16-21. He was listed with James Metcalf on the 1788 list, both indicated as white males over 16. In 1789 he was listed under his own name , with two white males over 16 in his household, the other male being George Reuben. Since he was the head of this household, he may have reached 21 years by the year 1789. In 1790, he had 1 white male over 16 (himself), 1 slave over 16 and 1 horse. On September 25, 1790, Anthony Minter deeded to William Bradford, for 89 lbs. land estimated 100 acres, land which the late John Minter lived on and devised by him to his son Anthony. This was witnessed by Nathl. Gray, James Waddell and Joseph Bayse (Fauquier County Deed Book 10, 1788-1798, p. 288). I could not find his name on the 1791 Personal Property Tax List. He was on the 1792-1805 list. This may have been the year he moved to Russell County. Anthony Minter married Judith Pendleton, marriage bond dated December 18, 1792. The bondsman was James White, who may be the same James White who married Anthony's cousin, Mary Minter, daughter of his uncle, Joseph Minter. Their marriage bond was dated January 11, 1785. Anthony Minter was bondsman for Christopher Sutfin who married Sarah Pendleton, marriage bond dated November 11, 1805. Sarah was probably Judith Pendleton's sister (her mother's name was Sarah).

Judith Pendleton,s parents were Daniel Pendleton and Sarah "Carter" Pendleton. Daniel Pendleton served in the Revolutionary War as a private in John Chilton's Company, 3rd Virginia Regiment, Continental Line, June and September 1777 and with the same company under John Blackwell in April 1778.

The above information has been furnished to me by Ann D. Ohmsen of 2223 Pelham Dr. S.W., Roanoke, VA 24018. The only addition I have made is Sarah Pendleton's maiden name (Carter).
