This deed made the 9th day of April 1883 between W. W. Bryant and Christina, his wife of the first part and John W. Blankenship of the second part all of the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia.

Wittnesseth: In consideration of the sum of one hundred and seventy two dollars and fifty cents paid by the Said John W. Blankenship to the said W.W. Bryant (the receipt thereof is hereby acknowledged and Christina his wife both convey grant gain and sell unto the said John W. Blankenship a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the county of Pittsylvania ,state of Virginia on the Ringgold road adjoiningg the lands of John W. Blankenship and E. G. Lewis and others or more particular described as following: Commencing on the Ringgold road running S 21 feet 25 P to corner, thence N 38 P N 49 E12 P N49 R26 P 12 L to corner N 11 1/2 W 12 P 12 L to the Ringgold Road thence down the Ringgold road to the beginning containing eleven and one half acres(11 1/2). To have and to hold forever and the said W.W. Bryant and Christina his wife doth warrant generally the right and title the said track or parcel of land to the said John W. This DEED made and entered into this the 4th day of April in the Year A.D. 1903 by and beteen W. E. Blankenship and Sallie F, his wife, parties of the first part, and John W. Blankenship, party of the second part, both parties of Dan River Township, Pittsylvania County, State of Virginia.

WITNESSETH: That the said W. E. Blankenship and Sallie F., his wife, parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of nine hundred and sixty dollars ($960) to them in hand paid by the said Jno W. Blankenship, the party of the second part, the receipt of which is herein acknowledged have bargained, granted, and sold and by this deed do grant, bargain, sell, release and convey unto the said John W. Blankenship, the party of the second part, his heirs or assigns forever, all that certain track or parcel of land on which they now reside lying and being situate in Dan River Township, Pittsylvania Virginia on the West margin of the Ringgold Road adjoining the lands of C.D. Bennett, W. T. Vernon, Mrs. Judith Anderson and others and bounded and discibed as follows: Beginning at new corner pointers to W. F. Vernon on the Ringgold Road thence up said road with C. D. Bennett to a large white oak in Fork of Road near the residence of said W. E. Bennett thence with said farm road as it meanders to the corner of Mrs. Judith Anderson thence with her line Southwards to new corner to W.T. Vernon thence with his dividing line Eastward to the beginning and containing by estimation of T. M. Bass a surveyor of Danville, Virginia forty eight acres to be the same more or less. It being the same track or parcel of land which was conveyed to said W. E. Blankenhip by W. F. Vernon by deed bearing date of-- -1899 and duly recorded in the County Court Clerks Office of Pittsylvania, Virginia and to which reference may be made for a particular description by metes and bounds. Furthermore the said W. E. Blankenshiop and Sallie F. , his wife, parties of the first part, convenant to and with the same Jno W. At a Court held for Pittsylvania County on the 15th day of September 1823 this Indenture from Timothy Earles and Naomia his wife and others to William Millner was presented in Court and upon the certficates of acknowledgement of the said Timothy and of the relinquishment of the dower of said Naomia hereon endorsed was ordered to be recorded as to them and at any day to wit at a Court held for said county the 15th day of March 1824 the said deed was acknowledged by Samuel Shumate to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded as to him.

WITNESSETH that the said James H. Hutson and Susan his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and forty four dollars lawful money of Virginia to them in hand paid the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge have granted bargained and sold and do by these presents grant bargain sell alien ensseoss and confirm unto the said John B. Shumate his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County aforesaid on both sides of the Turnpike containing forty eight acres and bounded as follows: To wit: Beginning at Eanes corner red oak near the road thence with Eanes line North 8 and 1/2 West 68 poles to a new corner chestnut in Eanes line, thence a new line South 70 degrees East 152 poles crossing the road and a branch to Divins corner red oak thence with his line South 36 degrees West 58 poles crossing two branches to Swansons corner white oak thence North 70 degrees West 101 poles to the beginning. To have and to hold with all the privileges thereunto belonging or in anywise pertaining unto him the said John B. Shumate his heirs and assigns forever, and they the said James H. Hutson and Susan his wife for themselves their heirs and assigns forever will warrant and defend the right and title of the aforesaid land against the lawful claim or claims of any other person or persons whatever.

Shumate his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the county aforesaid adjoining the lands of Riddle, Faller and others containing thirty five acres more or less and bounded as follows to wit: Beginning at Bruces and Warrens corner post oak thence North 46 degrees East 7 1/2 poles to a crook North 54 degrees East 98 poles to Fallens spannish oak South 28 degrees East, 49 poles to Riddles corner Chestnut S 38 degrees West, 86 poles to Bruces corner red oak North 45 degrees West 72 poles to the beginning. To have and to hold the aforesaid land and premises with all the privileges thereunto belonging, or in anywise appertaining unto him the said John B. Shumate his heirs and assigns forever, and they the said Stephen Midkiff and Martha his wife for themselves their heirs and assigns will warrant and forever defend the right in fee simple against the lawful claim or claims of any other person or persons whatever. THIS INDENTURE made this the 28th day of June 1845 between John B. Shumate of the one part and Nathaniel R. Royall and John C. Royall of the other part:

WITNESSETH that whereas the said John B. Shumate stands justly indebted unto Jesse Carter in the sum of $263.45 by bond due lst January 1844 and dated 2nd day September 1844, one bond for Eight Dollars due 1st January 1840 and being willing more effectually to secure the payment of the same. NOW this Indenture further WITNESSETH that for and in consideration of the present, as well as for the further consideration of one dollar to him in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the said John B. Shumate, hath given, granted, bargained and sold and by their presents doth give, grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said Nathaniel R. Royall and John C. Royall their heirs forever the following property, to wit: Thirty two acres of land lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania on the waters of Morrisons Branch and bounded by the lands of Jesse Carter, Pleasant W. Grigg and others and one other tract of land lying and being in the aforesaid County on the water of Strawberry containing 48 acres and bounded by the lands of John Swanson, Edward Eanes and others and all of his shop tools of every description, timbers, and everything belonging to the shop, 10 head of hogs and their increase, 3 bedsteads and furniture, 3 tables and one cupboard.

To have and to hold the said property unto them the said Nathaniel R. Royall and John C. Royall their heirs forever and the said John B. Shumate doth hereby consent and agree to and with the said Nathaniel R. Royall and John C. Royall that he will warrant and defend the said property unto them the said Nathaniel R. Royall and John C. Royall their heirs forever from the claim or claims of himself, heirs, and all other persons whatsoever upon trust neverthless that if the said John B. Shumate shall fail to pay the said Jessee Carter the debt aforesaid together with the interest thereon which may accrue by the 1st day of January 1846, then it shall be lawful for the said Nathaniel R. Royall and John C. Royall, their heirs, executors, administrators, or any person by them authorized at the request either of the said John B. Shumate or the said Jesse Carter having affixed the time and place of sale and given at least ten days public notice by advertisements to be struck up at different places in the neighbourhood to sell to the highest bidder for cash the said property or as much as shall be sufficient for the purpose and out of the proceeds of such sales first, pay the costs and charges attending the execution of the trust, then the debt aforesaid and the balance, if any, pay over to the said John B. Shumate, or his legal representative.

Shumate and Lucy Ann, his wife, in consideration of the sum of Three Hundred and Seventy Dollars lawful money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said Joseph E. Francis, the receipt is hereby acknowledged, have granted and sold unto the said Joseph E. Francis, his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Pittsylvania on both sides of the Turnpike Road containing 48 acres and bounded as follows:

At a County Court held for the County of Pittsylvania on the 16th day of October 1876, David S. Graves Deputy Surveyor of this County this day returned to the Court a report of the survey and plat of a lot of land sold by J. D. Blair, Treasurer of this County on the 15th day of December 1873, for Delinquent taxes as the property of John B. and Samuel Shumate and purchased by Josiah Smith for the firm of Josiah Smith, John D. Smith and Martha L. Smith, lying on both sides of Morrises branch of Sandy River containing 73 acres. Whereupon the said report and plat being examined by the Court and there being no objection to the same, it is ordered to be recorded.

This deed made this the 28th day of October 1876 between Henry P. Jones, Clerk of the County Court of Pittsylvania County Virginia of the first part and Josiah Smith, John D. Smith and Martha S. Smith all of said County of the second part.

WITNESSETH that whereas J. D. Blair, Treasurer of the County of Pittsylvania in pursuance of the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia in such cases made and provided returned to the County Court of said County on the 20th day of July 1874, a list of real estate within the County of Pittsylvania sold on the 15th day of December 1873, for the non payment of taxes thereon for the years 1865, 1866, 1867, 1868, 1870 and 1871, which list shows the date of sale of each tract of land so sold . . . and to which list is subjoined, the oath of said Blair, Treasurer as aforesaid in word and figures and to the tinor and effect as are prescribed and provided by section fourteen of Chapter Thirty eight of the Code of 1873. Va. Which said list with certificate of said oath attached thereto so returned as aforesaid and no cause to the contrary appearing. The said Court on the 20th day of July 1874 ordered a copy thereof to be certified to the Auditor of Public Accounts. And where since said sale and after two years had expired to wit: On the 16th day of October 1876, the said party of the second part produced to the County Court of said County the receipt of the Treasurer of said County for the sum of Four dollars and twenty six cents the amount of the purchase money for the tract of 64 acres mentioned in the list of land sold as hereinbefore recited as of the 15th December 1873, which tract of land in said list is charged to John B. and Samuel Shumate and along with the said receipt the said parties of the second part likewise at their own expense produced a report of David S. Graves Deputy Surveyor of said County of Pittsylvania made to the County Court aforesaid, specifying the metes and bounds of said tract of land so charged to said John B. and Samuel Shumate and purchased by the said parties of the second part as hereinbefore recited, and the names of the owners of the adjoining tracts and giving such further description of said 64 acres tract of land as will identify the same, and the Court seeing no objection thereto ordered the same to be recorded which has accordingly been done as appears from the records of the Clerks Office of said County Court. And the said parties of the second part the purchasers of said tract of land desiring to obtain a deed to the same as provided by Section 20 of said Chapter 38 of the Code of 1873 of Virginia. Now therefore in consideration of all the premises in pursuance of the laws for such purposes made and provided in consideration also of the said sum of $4.26 paid as aforesaid to the said Blair Treasurer, and of the further sum of one dollar cash in hand paid by the said party of the second part to the said Jones Clerk as aforesaid, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged. The said Henry P. Jones, Clerk of the County Court of Pittsylvania County, doth give grant, bargain, sell and convey with special warranty of title unto the said Josiah Smith, John D. Smith, and Martha L. Smith the aforesaid tract of land, described in said list as 64 acres charged to John B. and Samuel Shumate and described by Deputy Surveyor D. S. Graves in his report of survey hereinbefore mentioned in the following words, figures and signs that is to say. Surveyed 20th day of September 1876 a tract of land sold by J. D. This Deed made and entered into this the 11th day of November 1885 between Keen Dunbar and Martha A. his wife of the first part and Josiah Smith, John D. Smith and Martha T. Smith parties of the second part.

WITNESSETH that for and in consideration of the sum of 85 dollars in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged the said parties of the first part hereby give, grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said parties of the second part, with general warranty of title all their right, title and interest in and to 73 acres of land, situate and being in Pittsylvania County, Va., adjoining the lands of Josiah Smith and others, being the land whereof John B. Shumate died seized, the interest of said Dunbar and wife being nine-tenths of said land. Given under our hands and seals.

Indenture made January 20, 1787 between Hathgarner Theodrick McDaniel Of Pittsylvania County to Benjamin Morris of Pittsylvania County for 45 pounds current money of Virginia a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred acres more or less in Pittsylvania County. Beginning at corner of Pointers of Mooore lineand where Dodson line meet, N to the to the Moors Corner

The attached deed was made by my Great Great Grandmother, Eliza M. Pritchett, who was the widow of Joshua Pritchett (b. 1795 Brunswick, d. bef 18 Jan 1847). Upon the sale of this land she and 10-11 other families and over 100 slaves formed a wagon train and came to Texas to the Grayson/Fannin county area and settled in two towns named Bells and Savoy, Tx. They formed a building committee and rebuilt the Virginia Point Methodist Church (a Methodist Episcopal church). The church originally founded 1833 was burned to ground in mid 1840's because a soldier died of Yellow Fever in the chapel on his way to the Mexican wars. The parishoners burned the building to prevent spread of desease.

Eliza arrived here late 1857 or early 1858.

Know all men by these presents, that we, Robert A. Lee and
William B. Hurt and Richard Parker are held and firmly bound unto
the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of Five hundred Dollars
the payment of which will and timely be made, we bind ourselves
and each of us, and each of our heirs, executors and
administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents.
Sealed with our seals and dated this 28 day of May 1872.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the
Circuit Court of Pittsylvania County have this day granted
letters of Administration of the Estate of Burwell Lee deceased
to the above bound Robert A. Lee. Now if the said Robert A. Lee
shall faithfully discharge the duties of said office or trust,
then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force
and virtue, and we hereby waive the benefit of our homestead
exemption as to the above obligation.

Hundred Dollars in hand paid by the said Robert A. Lee, the
receipt of which is hereby acknowledged the said B. Lee have sold
and do by this Deed bargain, sell and convey unto the said R. A.
Lee one certain lot or parcel of land lying and being in the
County of Pittsylvania State of Virginia on the waters of
Staunton River containing one hundred and eighty six acres be the
same more or less bounded by the lands of Patsy Adams and said B.
Lee known as Lots 6 and 7 in the division of the landed estate of
Richard V. Walden as reported by Commissioners Graves, Snow and
Franklin, under an order of the County Court of Pittsylvania made
at its November term 1852 to have and to hold the aforesaid
parcel of land with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging to
him the said R. A. Lee his heirs and assigns forever free from
the claims of all persons whatsoever. Witnesseth my hand and

Burwell Lee of the County of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia of
the first part and Jeremiah A. Lee of the County and State
aforesaid of the second part.

WITNESSETH: that for and in consideration of the sum of Fifteen
Hundred Dollars in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby
acknowledged the said Burwell Lee hath sold and do by this deed
bargain, sell and convey unto the said Jeremiah A. Lee his heirs
and assigns one certain tract of land lying and being in the
County and State aforesaid upon the waters of Staunton River and
the water of Jasper's Creek bounded by the land of said B. Lee
and others beginning at the mouth of Jasper's Creek running with
the lines of the Estate of Thomas T. Adams deceased, the lines of
George Cox, thence off a new line between the said B. Lee's lands
to Staunton River thence up Staunton River to the beginning

1869 between Burwell Lee of the County of Pittsylvania State of
Virginia of the first part and Robert A. Lee, trustee of the
second part, Virginia T. Lee, Lucy E. Lee, Eli Parker, Pannill
and Franklin, and Jeremiah A. Lee of the third part. WITNESSETH
that the said Burwell Lee is justly indebted to the said Virginia
T. Lee in the sum of Two Thousand Twenty Five Dollars by bond
bearing date on the first day of January 1869 with legal interest
thereon; to the said Lucy E. Lee in the sum of Twelve hundred and
Fifty Dollars, due as Guardian with legal interest thereon from
the first day of April 1858; to Eli Parker in the sum of One
Hundred Dollars by bond bearing date on the 28th day of August
1867 with legal interest thereon; to Pannill and Franklin
the sum of Fifty Nine Dollars 16 cents by account due lst day of
January 1869 with legal interest thereon, and to Jeremiah A. Lee,
the sum of One hundred Dollars due by account with legal interest
thereon from the first day of January 1859, and the said B. Lee
is willing and desirous to secure now this Deed.

WITNESSETH that for and in consideration of the premises and also
for the further sum of One Dollar in hand paid the receipt of
which is hereby acknowledged the said B. Lee hath sold and do by
this deed, bargain, sell and convey to the said Robert A. Lee,
his heirs and assigns forever IN TRUST one certain tract or
parcel of land lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania
State of Virginia on the waters of the Staunton River containing
four hundred and twenty acres be the same more or less bounded by
the lands of Jeremiah A. Lee, Virginia S. Adams, George Cox,
Robert A. Lee and Staunton River, also two mules, one gray mare
and colt, one sorrel mare, stock of cattle, hogs and sheep,
plantation tools of every description, household and kitchen
furniture, one sorghum mill, crop of fodder, oats, wheat,
tobacco, corn shucks, straw to the said Robert A. Lee, his heirs
and assigns forever. NEVERTHELESS that the said R. A. Lee shall
permit the said B. Lee, his heirs or assigns to remain in quiet
and peaceable possession of the said tract or parcel of land and
all other property mentioned in this Deed until default be made
in the payment of the aforesaid sums of money, either in whole or
in part, then at the request of either party on or after the
first day of April 1870, the said R. A. Lee, as Trustee, shall
after giving public notice ten days of the time and place of sale
sell at public auction to the highest bidder for cash the tract
of land and other property mentioned in this Deed and out of the
monies arising from such sale after paying all necessary expenses
of this Deed first pay to the said Eli Parker the amount of his
debt then pay to all the other parties in this Deed the amounts
due them, if as much money be in hand, if not, each in proportion
to his or her debt, then if any balance pay to the said B. Lee or
his heirs, but if the aforesaid sums of money be fully paid off
and discharged on or before the first day of April 1870 so that
no default or payment be in the aforesaid sums of money then this
Deed be null and void.

In witness whereof, the parties have hereunto set their hand and
seals the day and year first above written.

Medora C. Lee, his wife of the County of Lafayette in the State
of Missouri have this day, for and in consideration of the sum of
Five hundred dollars in hand paid by Robert A. Lee of the County
of Pittsylvania in the State of Virginia, granted, bargained and
sold unto the said Robert A. Lee all their right, title and
interest in the following described tract of land, situated in
the County of Pittsylvania in the State of Virginia that is to
say:   Beginning on Staunton River, below the mouth of Jasper
Creek at ash tree South 81 1/2 East 257 1/4 poles to pointers in
George Cox's line, due South 2 poles to pointers, South 26 East
12 poles, South 61 East (crossing branch at 12 poles) 48 10/100
poles to pointers in Adams line, then with his lines South

THIS DEED made this 31st day of August 1888 between Robert A. Lee
and Martha K. Lee his wife of the County of Pittsylvania and
State of Virginia of the first part and Griffin Dobyns of the
County of Bedford and State of Virginia of the second part.

WITNESSETH: That for and in consideration of the sum of One
Thousand Dollars good and lawful money of the United States to
them in hand paid by the party of the second part at and before
the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof
they do hereby acknowledge, the said parties of the first
part, do hereby grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said
party of the second part with special warranty, a certain tract
or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania
Virginia, on the waters of Staunton River and Jasper Creek
adjoining the lands of A. F. Snow and others it being the same
tract of land purchased by R. A. Lee from J. A. Lee and conveyed
to the said R. A. Lee by deed bearing date on the 11th day of
August 1884 and of recorded in the Clerk's Office of the County
Court of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and contains 231 acres 3
roods and 32 3/4 poles (according to survey made by Wm. C.
Smith October 22 1868) be the same more or less to have and to
hold the said land, together with all the appurtenances unto the
said Griffin Dobyns, his heirs and assigns forever.

THIS DEED made this the 6th day of April A.D. 1911, between R. A.
Lee, Sr., and his wife, M. K. Lee of the first part and Ella V.
Scruggs of the second part, both and all of the County of
Pittsylvania and State of Virginia.

WITNESSETH that for and in consideration of the sum of One
Hundred and Fifty Dollars, paid by the said Ella V. Scruggs and
hereby acknowledged, we do bargain, sell and convey to the said
Ella V. Scruggs, a parcel or lot of land in the aforesaid County
and State adjoining the lands of W. L. Vaughan and others
containing fifty acres, by the same more or less, beginning at
the line of H. C. Parker at the Junction of rail and post fence
and running with said fence by the old tobacco barns to the
pasture fence, then by chops and blaze to the corner of fence
near this spring hill gate and continuing with said fence
to the Vaughan line at the Blackrock bluff, then east to Taylor's
Ford Road, then southerly with said road to Parker's line, then
westly to the beginning. Reservation that we the parties of the
first part, occupy and hold the mansion house, garden, pasture
and firewood and spring during their natural life and at their
death then the said Ella V. Scruggs to own the land in her own
right.

Will of MATHIAS GRAY

In the Name of God Amen, I Matthias Grey of Frederick County in
the Province of Maryland Planter being infirm in body but in
perfect health do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament
in manner following; that is to say I recommend my Soul into the
hand of God almighty that gave it, and my body I recommend to the
Earth to be decently interred at the discretion of my Executrix,
and touching such worldly estate which it hath pleased God to
bless me with I will and bequeath in the following manner and
form -.

ITEM. I will and bequeath this plantation I now live on called
Greys Neck unto my dearly beloved wife SARAH GREY during her
natural life and after her death to my two sons BENJAMIN and ADEN
GREY.

ITEM. I bequeath unto my two sons WILLIAM and BENJAMIN GRAY
a tract of land called Gray's Meadows to be divided between them
in manner following that is sixty acres of said tract to WILLIAM
and the remaining part thereof to JEREMIAH.

ITEM. I bequeath my personal part of estate in manner and form
following vis. One third thereof to my beloved wife SARAH GREY,
one third to my son ADIN, and the remaining third to my daughter,
MARY.

ITEM. I bequeath unto my son WILLIAM five shillings to be raised
out my personal estate.

ITEM. I bequeath unto my son JEREMIAH five shillings to be raised
as above.

ITEM. I bequeath unto my son BENJAMIN five shillings to be raised
as above.

Lastly I do make and constitute SARAH my said wife Executrix of
this my last Will and Testament, and I do hereby utterly,
disallow, revoke and disannul any and every other testaments by
me in any wise before named, willed or bequeathed ratifying and
confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this
twenty-ninth day of January in the year of our Lord God, one
thousand seven hundred and seventy five.

Will and Testament and that at the time of his doing he was to
the best of their apprehensions of a sound and disposing mind and
memory and that also they did see Philip Hocker the other
subscribing witness to the said Will sign his name as a witness
thereto and that they severally subscribe their names as
witnesses to the said Will in the presence of the Testator and in
the presence of each other.

Jeremiah - to deliver 59 1/2 acres of land to Charles Cathow.
Pittsylvania Co. - At the request of JEREMIAH GRAY the following
POWER OF ATTORNEY was recorded this 3rd day of March 1829 Court.
Know all men by these presents that I ADIN GRAY of the County of
Pittsylvania and the State of Virginia for diverse good causes
and considerations me thereunto especially moving have nominated
constituted and appoint my trusty friend and brother JEREMIAH
GRAY of the County of Montgomery and State of Maryland to be my
true and lawful attorney and for me and in my name to make, seal
and deliver to Charles Cathow of the county and state last
mentioned or to his heirs or assigns such deed as he the said
Charles or his or their cormeil seamed in the law shall
reasonably devise, advise or require for the conveyance of fifty
nine and a half acres of land more or less and the same to
acknowledge in the court of the said County of Montgomery
and the whole or any part of the consederation money now due me
and owing so ask demand and receive of and from the said Charles
Cathow, his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns and upon
receipt thereof for me and in my name sufficient receipts
acquittances and discharges to make and give and do also give and
grant unto my said attorney full power and authority for me and
in my name and so my use to use and take all lawful ways for the
collection of such debts to be made anywise disallowing in any
part of the said state of Maryland and upon receipt of all or any
part thereof in the manner as aforesaid to give sufficient
receipt acquittances and discharges and generally do hereby give
and grant unto my said attorney full power and authority to act,
do and perform all matters and things for me and in my name
and to my use in a full and lawful manner as if I myself were
personally present hereby ratifying and confirming all and
whatsoever my said attorney shall lawfuly do to be done for me
and in my name and to my use in and touching the premises
        In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and
affixed my seal the XV day of September in the year or our Lord
one thousand seven hundred and eightyeight.

This indenture made the twentieth day of October in the year of our Lord
Christ one thousand seven hundred and ninety three between George
Southerland, Sr of the county of Pittsylvania of the one part and John
Southerland of the county of Pittsylvania of the other part Witnesseth
that the said George Southerland for and in consideration of the sum of
thirty pounds current money of Virginia to him in had paid by the said
John Southerland at or before the ensealing and delivery of these
presents the receipt whereof the said George Southerland doth hereby
acknowledge and thereof and of and from every part and parcel thereof
doth hereby acquit and discharge him the said John Southerland his heirs
executors and administrators by these presents he the said George
Southerland hath granted bargained and sold, aliened, ...and confirmed
all that tract...or parcel of land situate lying and being in the county
of Pittsylvania on Sandy Creek and Long Branch of the same and bounded
as followeth Beginning at a sweet gum, thence North forty five degrees
seventy six poles to a pine, thence north three degrees west one hundred
and eighty poles to a pine, thence north twenty degrees, west one
hundred forty eight poles to a white oak on the Long Branch and crossing
four prongs of the same, thence down the said Long branch as it meanders
one hundred and sixty poles to a beech on Sandy Creek thence down Sandy
Creek as it meanders to the beginning, in all containing one hundred
fifty seven acres more or less with all houses and all other
improvements, wood, underwoods, swamps, meadows, grounds or any other
appurtenances whatsoever to John Southerland his heirs and assigns
