Ella and Betty

Sunday March 1, 1942
Trapped midway a railroad trestle near Lafayette, Ella and Betty Smith, 11 and 13 years old, were struck by a streamlined Tennessean west bound train out of Roanoke.
The girls, daughters of Mrs. Flossie Smith, Radford WPA worker, were en route from school to their home in Indian Run about a mile away. The bridge crosses a branch of the Roanoke river and parallels a highway bridge on US 11.
It was reported that Engineer F.L. Miller of Roanoke did not see the girls at once as he was seated on the “blind” side of the curve, but that R.W. Smiley, assistance road foreman of engineers, on the opposite side of the engine’s cab saw the two tiny figures on the span and jumped across the cab and pulled the emergency brake but too late to slow the fast train immediately.
