Coroners

Campbell County, Kentucky

On February 6, 1797, Thomas Lindsey produced a commission from James Garrard, Governor of Kentucky, appointing him coroner of Campbell County.  As far is known, he was the first coroner.  he was born in Ireland's Ulster province, of Scotch descent, and in 1789, he, his wife and eight children left Ireland for Philadelphia.  In 1790 they came to Limestone, now Maysville, Kentucky.  After two years residence, he moved his family to a farm near Lexington where they remained a short time before coming to Leitch's Station in Campbell County.

In 1794 he bargained with Major Leitch for a farm of 320 acres.  He was appointed a justice of the peace when the county was created, was one of the first trustees of the Newport Seminary, and built one of the early jails. He lived on his farm his entire time in Campbell County except from 1813 to 1816 in Newport.  He died in 1818.
