THEODORE AND ANNA HUBER

Theodore “Ted” and Anna Huber are among present-day [1988} Hazenites who lived in the community before the town was founded.

Ted, the son of Jacob and Maria (Kilber) Huber, was born in Mannhaven in 1911.

Anna, the daughter of August and Katharina (Breitling) Isaak, also was born near Mannhaven in 1911. Both Ted and Anna attended rural school in the Mannhaven area.

They were married in 1934 in Trinity Lutheran Church near the present site of Pick City, and they operated the farm Anna had inherited from her parents, battling the Depression years by growing crops, milking cows, raising chickens and a few pigs.

Anna recalls they had no watch or clock when they were married, so they watched the sun (when possible) and were always on time for church. Anna added to their income sewing for others. A dress for a neighbor girl brought 75 cents. Next time they went to town, she bought an alarm clock – for 75 cents.

Their four children are Loretta (Zarambo), born in 1935; Maxine (Beckwith), 1939; Harvey, 1942; Rodney, 1946.  There was no school nearby, so when Loretta started school she stayed with Anna’s sister. Then Ted moved a vacant school building onto their land, cleaned it up, found a teacher, and the children had a school.

When Anna’s brother-in-law died, her sister, Emma and her eight children, asked Ted and Anna to come live with them, which they did, bringing along their livestock. Emma and Ted jointly operated the two farms. At times Ted worked for W.P.A., sharing his check with Emma. While Emma and Anna did farm chores, Ted and Reinhold Guenthner ran a small lumber mill, making lumber from cottonwood trees. They lived with Emma two years but continued farming together for about seven years. In 1937, Emma and Ted farmed about 500 acres of cropland that yielded a total of 50 bushels of wheat and 40 bushels of barley. The rest of the crop was cut for hay for the milk cows. During the next few years things started looking up, prices improved and crops improved.

Ted and Anna moved back to their own farm and operated it successfully. In 1952 they moved to Hazen, continued to operate the farm while becoming active in such community activites as PTA, Boy Scouts, Homemakers, and St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Several youngsters lived with them while attending school, including an exchange student.

Ted started Huber Construction Company, engaged in building houses and some commercial structures, but he continued grain farming until he retired in 1978. He kept himself busy selling real estate, helping on the farm, golfing, hunting, and fishing. The family farm is being run by their son, Rodney, and his wife Michele, and their son-in-law, Gary Beckwith and his wife, Maxine.

Ted’s father died in 1944; his mother in 1962.  Anna’s father died in 1933; her mother in 1953.
