J. C. (Jake) Wilkerson, died at his home
in Palacios this morning at one-thirty.
Jake, as he was called by his many
friends, has been employed by the Southern Pacific Railway
Co. for over fifty years and would have soon retired on a
pension. For many years he was on the Hawkinsville run and
for the past twenty-five years has been on the Wharton run.
Funeral services will be from his home in Palacios Wednesday
morning.

Mrs. Lena Wilkerson, Long-Time
Resident, Buried Here Saturday
Death
claimed one of Palacios’ oldest residents Thursday, July 3,
when Mrs. Lena Augusta Wilkerson passed to her eternal rest
in the Bay View General Hospital.
Funeral
services were held Saturday morning, July 5, at 10 o’clock
in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Brannon
officiating. Interment followed in the Palacios Cemetery.
Lena
Miller Wilkerson was born July 19, 1868, in Indianola,
Texas, daughter of the late
Augusta Weinrich Miller and James Miller. When a
young girl she went to Victoria to work for the parents of
Charles Jacob Wilkerson, the man she later married on
December 30, 1889 in Louise, Texas. They moved to Palacios
on August 3, 1903 and have made their home here since,
except for the few years they lived in Wharton, after he was
transferred there by the S. P. railroad.
She was
preceded in death by her husband on June 16, 1936, her son,
Frank, and two daughters, Lena and Ruby.
She is
survived by two daughters, Alice Fields and Elizabeth
Wilkerson of Palacios; four sons, Vernon of San Antonio, Roy
of Needville, Van of San Diego, Calif. and Charles of
Wharton; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral of Mrs. Mary Wilkerson whose death
occurred
Friday afternoon, April 22, 1921, was
held yesterday afternoon from the First English
Church, the cortege leaving her late residence
at 501 East Constitution Street at 5:30 o’clock.
Interment was made in the Evergreen Cemetery
[Victoria, Texas] Rev. J. C. Felger, Pastor of
the First English Lutheran Church, officiating.
The following named gentlemen acted as pall
bearers: Active – Herman Fischer, Al.
W. Raven, Louis Sigmund, William Harris,
H.C. Gramann, Jules Meyer, H. Q. Hollan and
Edwin Wagner; Honorary – L. N. Hofer, L. P.
Deibold, J. D. Sneigr, Fred Holzheuser, Anton
Bauer, and C. A. Wertheimer.
Many floral offerings, designs and cut flowers,
sent by sorrowing friends of the decedent, were
banked about the last resting place of this
loved woman. The grave was a veritable mass of
beautiful flowers, which tokened the esteem in
which the decedent was held by her many friends.

Mrs. Mary
Wilkerson died suddenly at
1:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. C. B. Meguire after
an attack of heart failure. Mrs. Wilkerson was
apparently in good health yesterday morning and
ate a hearty meal at the noon hour and was
stricken after she had left the table, her death
occurring a few minutes later. Mrs. Wilkerson
was born in
New York City
December 25, 1834, and at the time of her
death was 86 years, 3 months and 27 days of age.
Decedent was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton
Atzenhoffer, natives of
New York State, however, she was a
pioneer citizen of this section of
Texas, as she came here with her parents
at an early age. She traveled with her parents
in various parts of
Mexico and came with them to
Indianola, where they made their home. In
1851, at the age of 17, she was married to John
W. Wilkerson, of
Biloxi, Miss., at Indianola [Calhoun
County, Texas] and lived in that thriving port
city until the 1875 storm. They then removed to
Cuero and later to
Meyersville. From Meyersville, they went
to Louise for a number of years and then came to
Victoria to make their home.
Mr. Wilkerson died at
Germantown
on November 11, 1896, while on a visit in
that section. His remains were brought to this
city and interred in the local cemetery
[Evergreen Cemetery, Victoria, Texas]. Thirteen
children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilkerson,
seven of whom survive: four sons, F. A.
Wilkerson of
Lott, Texas, John Wilkerson of
Houston, Jake Wilkerson of
Palacios, and Henry Wilkerson of this
city; three daughters: Mrs. Margaret Urban, Mrs.
C. B. Meguire of Victoria and Mrs. Gus
Holzheuser of
Yoakum. One brother, Charles Atzenhoffer
of
Arneckeville, also survives.
During the later years of her life, decedent has
been living with her daughter, Mrs. C. B.
Meguire at her home in this city. The funeral
will be held from her late residence, 501 East
Constitution Street, at
5:30 o’clock tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon,
April 24, 1921, Rev. J. C. Felger, of the
English Lutheran Church to officiate. Interment
will be made in the
Evergreen Cemetery.

A turkey dinner with all the trimmin’s was served at the home of
Mrs. J. C Wilkerson at noon Sunday in celebration of Mrs.
Wilkerson’s 73rd birthday. In honor of the occasion all
of her children, but one son, Van, in California, were here to make
the event a most happy one. Enjoying the celebration, besides Mrs.
Wilkerson, were her three daughters, Mrs. Alice Fields, and Misses
Elizabeth and Ruby Wilkerson, of Palacios. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon
Wilkerson, Charles Wilkerson and Berman Jones, of Wharton, Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Wilkerson and two children, of Needville, and Mrs. John
Bentler of Palacios.

Palacios citizens
were shocked and grieved last Friday evening when the
news came that Ruby Wilkerson had passed away. All knew
of her illness yet none realized the end was so near.
Ruby Elliott Wilkerson, youngest daughter of the late
J.C. and Mrs. Wilkerson, was born Nov. 1, 1905 and died
Oct. 24, 1947. She was the first white child to be born
in Palacios, and spent all her life here except the few
years her parents made their home in Wharton.
She attended the Palacios schools and was a member of
the class to graduate in 1924. In early girlhood she
joined the Presbyterian Church of which she was a loyal
member and always accompanied her mother to services.
As an employee she was faithful to her duties, and gave
of her services unstintingly. For some time she had been
at the ticket window of the Capitol Theatre and her warm
greetings to one and all made her a legion of friends by
whom she will be sadly missed.
Besides the aged mother, she is survived by two sisters,
Mrs. Alice Fields and Miss Elizabeth Wilkerson, of
Palacios; four brothers, Vernon, of Alice; Roy,
Needville; Van, San Diego, California.; and Charles of
Wharton.
Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon
conducted by Rev. Daniel A. Baker, pastor of the
Presbyterian Church and burial made in the Palacios
Cemetery.
Out-of-town relatives and friends here for the service
included: Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wilkerson, Alice, Texas;
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilkerson, Needville, Texas; Charles

Fields, El Campo; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Chaddock, Victoria;
Maynard Early, Wharton, Texas; Miss Lois Pickle, Bay
City; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Claybourn, El Campo; Mrs. Joe
Mechalcik and daughter, El Campo.

Funeral services for Miss
Elizabeth Ester Wilkerson will be held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, May 2, in the First Presbyterian Church with
Rev. Dick Stone officiating. Interment will be in the
Palacios Cemetery.
Daughter of the late Charles Jake and Lena Augusta
Miller Wilkerson, she was born January 27, 1894, in
Cuero. A retired salesclerk, she had been a resident of
Palacios for 75 years and was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church. She died Monday morning, April 30,
in Wagner General Hospital.
She is survived by two brothers, Charles T. Wilkerson of
Palacios and Vernon Wilkerson of San Antonio and a
number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Charles
Thomas Wilkerson, 75, were held Nov. 18 at 10 a.m.
at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Elroy
Weikel officiating. Interment followed at Palacios
Cemetery.
Wilkerson, a lifelong resident of
Palacios, was born Oct. 25, 1908 in Palacios and
died Nov. 15, 1983 at Wagner General Hospital. He
was the son of Jacob and Lena Augusta Miller
Wilkerson. He was a veteran of World War II and
managed the Early Shoe Store in Wharton for 30
years. Prior to retirement he had been associated
with The Shoe House in Bay City for 10 years.
Survivors include one niece,
Lucille Wilkerson Coulter of Angleton; two nephews,
Roy Charles Wilkerson of Norway and Charles Fields
of San Antonio; and one brother, Vernon Leslie
Wilkerson of Tomball.
Pallbearers were Scottie House,
Bill Newton, Harvey Burger, Raymond Hernandez, John
Toellner and Norman Brotemarkle

A memorial Mass for Van V. (Tex)
Wilkerson, 75, of 6460 Convoy Court will be said at 10 a.m.
at Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church in University
City.
Cremation is planned. The Telophase Society is in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Wilkerson, who died Thursday in a hospital, was a native
of Texas and a veteran of World War I. He had lived here 50
years and was formerly employed as a security guard at
Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two sons, Charles and
Michael; a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Brannon of Poway; 10
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 Funeral services for Roy Charles
Wilkerson, 63 of Needville were held from
St. Paul
Presbyterian Church in Palacios, with Rev. John P. Dany
and Rev. Richard Stone officiating. Interment was in the
Palacios Cemetery.
Mr. Wilkerson died at his home
suddenly
Friday afternoon, from an apparent heart attack.
He was a native of Victoria, but moved to Palacios as a
boy. He had lived in Needville since 1941. He had worked
for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 39 years. He was a
station agent for Southern Pacific in Needville at the
time of his death. He was a member of
St.
Paul's Presbyterian Church and was an Elder in
the Church.
He was treasurer of Needville Lions
Club; a charter member of the Needville American Legion
Post 350; and a member of the Quarter-Back Club.
Included among his survivors are his
wife, Mrs. Beatrice Wilkerson of Needville; one
daughter, Mrs. A. H. Pierce Jr. of Palacios; one son, R.
C. Wilkerson, Jr. of Lake Charles, La; three brothers,
Van Wilkerson of San Diego, California; Vernon Wilkerson
of San Antonio; Charles Wilkerson of Wharton; two
sisters, Miss Elizabeth Wilkerson of Palacios and Mrs.
Alice Fields of Palacios; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Hugo Ley Jr. Herbert
Nowotny, Lad Stavinoha, Dr. Joe Yelderman, Melvin
Kettler, Jimmie Dorr. Honorary pallbearers were Elders
of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.
Funeral arrangements were under the
direction of Garmany and Company of Needville.

Roy C. Wilkerson Receives Medal After
Many Years
|

|
Seventeen years and more have passed
since many of our boys went overseas for duty, and one
of those to go was Roy C. Wilkerson, who went with
Battery B, of the
New York
Division. A few days ago Roy was reminded of the fact by
receiving a medal from Verdun and is the only
Texas
boy to be so honored, as he and a boy from outside of
the state
of New York to be members of this Division.
Accompany the Medal was a letter in
French and translated reads as follows:
"To the Grand Chiefs, Officers,
Soldiers and to All:
Roy C. Wilkerson, Private 105th Field
Artillery, U.S. Army, his name is inscribed on the Book
of Gold of the soldiers of Verdun, Meuse Argonne, St.
Mihiel, 1918.
"Heroes known and unknown, living and
dead, who have triumphed from the avalanche of the
barbarians and immortalized their names throughout the
world and throughout future centuries, the City of
Verdun unconquered and standing upon its ruins,
dedicates this medal as a mark of its recogition.
Signed by the President of Verdun,
the President Book of Gold and the Mayor and Chief
Deputy"

Roy Charles Wilkerson, who died of a heart attack at his
home in
Needville,
Friday, April
13, was buried in the Palacios Cemetery Sunday
afternoon.
Funeral services were held at
1 p.m. Sunday
in the Needville Presbyterian Church and at
4 p.m.
in the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with the Rev.
Richard Stone officiating at the local services.
A former resident of Palacios, Mr. Wilkerson was born
on February 15,
1899 in
Victoria, Texas, a son of Jake and Lena Wilkerson. In
1903 they moved to Palacios where he lived for many years.
He was an employee of the Southern Pacific railroad for many
years and at the time of his death was depot agent in
Needville.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bea Bentler Wilkerson of
Needville, a son, Roy Wilkerson of
Lake Charles,
La. and a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Pierce of Palacios,
two sisters, Mrs. Alice Fields and Miss Lizzie Wilkerson of
Palacios; three brothers, Van of
San Diego,
California,
Vernon
of San
Antonio and Charles Wilkerson of
Wharton,
and six grandchildren.
