Bentler
My name is John Bentler. I was born November 13,
1861 in Bauine, Michigan. My father was Herman Bentler born in
Germany and my mother was Katy Smith Bentler born in Canada. I had
six brothers and sisters. I married Martha E. Rush in 1883 in
Wilmont, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of Matthew
Rush and Charlotte Hagen born August 10, 1860 in Wilmont, Canada. I
was a carpenter and a farmer. We lived in many places before coming
to Palacios. Two of our children, Raymond and William, were born in
Michigan the same year, 1885. Four of our children (Nora, Earl,
Beatrice and John) were born in North Dakota over the next five
years. Like many others, we came to Palacios, Matagorda County
around 1910. The town was new, exciting and offered many
opportunities and land was cheap. I continued to farm and used my
carpenter skill to build cabinets and furnishings to support my
family. I died September 6, 1939 at the age of 78. My wife continued
to live in Palacios. She died in Harris County in 1957. She was 97

Mrs. John Bentler was honored on her 92nd birthday Sunday, August 10, with a dinner party at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Wilkerson, in Needville. A delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings was enjoyed by the honoree, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Hebert and E. J. Bentler of Houston, Mrs. R. C. Wilkerson Jr. of Pledger, and Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Pierce Jr. and children of Palacios. Following the dinner and opening of the lovely gifts, the group motored to Houston to visit the honoree's grandson, R. C. Wilkerson Jr., who is in the Veteran's Hospital. Mrs. Bentler had been presented a beautifully decorated birthday cake, half of which she shared with boys in the hospital

Funeral services for Mrs.
Martha Bentler, 96, were held at the
Palacios Funeral Home Wednesday, May 22, at 3 p.m. with Rev. T. I.
Andrews of Houston assisted by Rev. John Brannon, pastor of the
First Presbyterian

We take this means of expressing our sincere
thanks to our friends for their many acts of kindness and

illness and after the death of our mother and grandmother, Mrs.

food, sent flowers, or helped in any way. You will always be

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. F. H. Hebert of Houston and Mrs. Beatrice Wilkerson of Nordheim; two sons, Ray and Earl Bentler of Houston.
John Bentler John Bentler, aged 77, passed away at his home in this city early Wednesday morning, and his death came as a shock to his family and friends. On Tuesday he and Mrs. Bentler accompanied their daughter, Mrs. R. C. Wilkerson and children, who had spent the summer here, to their home in Gregory, and it seemed he was better than he had been for some time. A stroke of paralysis some months ago had impaired his health, but he was thought to be making a very satisfactory recovery. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Ray and Earl Bentler, of Houston, two daughters, Mrs. Frank Hebert, Houston and Mrs. R. C. Wilkerson, Gregory and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the family home conducted by Rev. George F. Gillespie, and Rev. J. G. M. John Bentler
John Bentler, who died at his residence in this city, Wednesday,
September 6, 1939 was born in Bowne, Kent County, Mich., November
13, 1861, of German immigrant parents. On October 30, 1883 he was married to Miss Martha E. Rush, who has been his faithful companion for more than a half century. Mr. Bentley moved with his family to Palacios in 1909 and continued to make this his home. He united with the Presbyterian church, October 19, 1913, on profession of his faith and baptism. He was a faithful attendant of services and active in different departments of the church work. For a time he was absent due to ill health however upon partial recovery he resumed his place in the service and was present for the Sunday morning services before his death on Wednesday.
Besides the widow, four children survive, two sons, Ray M. & Errol
J. Bentler, of Houston, two daughters, Mrs. R. C. Wilkerson,
Gregory, [Mrs. F. H. Hebert].
Also three grandchildren, Billie John Bentler, Lucile and R. C.
Wilkerson, Jr. and to these we join their numerous friends in words
of consolation and sympathy. Services were held at the home of the
departed Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. George F. Gillespie,
after which the remains were taken to the Palacios cemetery and
tenderly laid to rest under the direction of the Brandon-Duffy
Funeral Home.
Among the out of town relatives and friends here for the funeral
were Mr. and Mrs. Eli Hallman, Toledo, Texas, a cousin and only
relative in Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Curtis, Houston; Mrs. D.
Vercher, Houston; Mr. Frank Porter, Houston; Mrs. J. C. Wilkerson

Mrs. Martha Bentler, Pioneer Palacian, Dies In Houston
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Bentler, 96, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Wednesday, Mary 22, at 3 p. m. with Rev. T. I. Andrews of Houston assisted by Rev. John Brannon, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.
Mrs. Bentler was born August 10, 1860 and died Sunday at the home of her son, Earl Bentler, 945 Dorothy St., Houston.
A short service was held at Heights Funeral Home in Houston Wednesday at 10 a. m. before the body was brought here for burial.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Norah Hebert, Houston, Mrs. Beatrice Wilkerson, Needville; one son, Earl; four grandchildren, Billy John Bentler, Seattle, Wash., R. C. Wilkerson, Lake Charles, La., Lucille Pierce, Palacios and six great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 3:30 p. m. Friday in the Palacios Cemetery for Mrs. Nora Bentler Hebert, 78. Funeral services were held that morning at 11 a. m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Houston. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bentler, she passed away Wednesday in a Houston hospital after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Bea Wilkerson of Needville, brother, Earl Bentler of Houston and several nieces and nephews. Friday, April 26 in Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Houston with Rev. M. Douglas Harper, Jr. and Rev. Rodney C. Sunday officiating and at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios at 4 p. m. Friday. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery following graveside services under the auspices of Palacios Lodge No. 990 AF & AM Mr. Hebert died Wednesday in Herrmann Hospital. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hebert, he was born November 8, 1888. He married Norah Bentler on September 30, 1912. He was a retail meat man until he retired in 1954. A resident of Houston since 1931, he was a member of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and the West University Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Norah Bentler Hebert, Houston; and sister, Mrs. W. M. Hollbrook of New Orleans, La. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond M. Bentler, son of Mrs. John Bentler of Palacios, was born February 25, 1885 in Brown Center, Kent County, Michigan, and passed away in Houston, Friday, September 16, 1949.
When one year old, his parents moved to Barton, North Dakota, where they resided until 1909 when the family moved to Palacios.
On December 29, 1920 he and Miss Irene Brown were married, and they moved to Houston, where he resided until the time of his passing. To this union was born one son, Billie John Bentler, who resides in Seattle, Wash.
Survivors besides his wife and son are his mother, Mrs. John Bentler, Palacios; brother, Errol Bentler of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. F. J. Hebert, Houston and Mrs. R. C. Wilkerson of Needville; one niece, Mrs. A. H. Pierce of Brownfield; and one nephew, R. C. Wilkerson, Jr. of Pledger.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock from the Heights Funeral Home, Houston, conducted by Rev. A. M. Dorsett after which the body was brought to Palacios and taken to the home of his mother where services were held at 3 o’clock with Rev. George F. Gillespie officiating.
Interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Irene B. Bentler Held Her Monday
Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Brown Bentler, wife of the late Ray Bentler, were held at the First Presbyterian Church, Monday, December 2 at 3 p. m. with Rev. John Brannon officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.
Born March 15, 1892, she died November 27, 1957 in Kerrville, Texas.
She is survived by her son, Billy John Bentler of Seattle, Washington and a brother, Wallace Brown of Houston.
Out of town relatives attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Hebert of Houston, Mrs. Roy Wilkerson and Mrs. Robert Beard of Needville.
