MR. AND MRS. JOHN
BENTLER CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY; BIG RECEPTION

Mr. and Mrs. John Bentler observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their home on Pavillion Street, Sunday, October 29.  A reception was held from 2:30 until 5:00 p.m., during which time more than one hundred of their neighbors and friends called to offer their congratulations and to wish that many, many more years may be added to their journey through life together.

The rooms of the Bentler home were beautiful in their decorations - - -  the living room carrying out the color scheme with roses and fall blossoms in profusion, and the golden wedding bell, under which the honorees stood to receive their guests.  The dining room was in gala attire with branches and garland of the beautiful yaupon.  Punch and cakes were served here by the Misses Naomi and Marion Harrison.  A gorgeous wedding cake, which also stressed the golden event in its decorations, graced the dining table.

Miss Lucile Wilkerson, the only grand-daughter, had charge of the guest book.  Many letters, cards, telegrams and beautiful gifts attested the love and high esteem held for Mr. and Mrs. Bentler by their host of friends.

Mr. Bentler is a native of Michigan, being born and reared in Kent county, near Grand Rapids.  He went over into Canada to select his life companion, who was Miss Martha Elizabeth Rush, and married her there on October 30, 1883.  The young couple made their home in Michigan for a while, but the call of the Dakotas took them to South Dakota, where they lived two years.  North Dakota looked better to them then, and so they journeyed to that state and were among the pioneers who saw the vast prairie develop into one of the richest farming countries in the States.  Many thrilling experiences can they relate of their life there, and where they made their home for twenty-two years.  Twenty-six years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Bentler came to Palacios and have made this city their home ever since, and are among our city's most highly respected and honored citizens.

Two sons and two daughters, blessed this union and were here with their parents to assist them in celebrating the half-century mark of their wedded life.  The sons are Ray and Earl, both of Houston, and the daughters, Mrs. F. J. Herbert, also of Houston and Mrs. Roy C. Wilkerson, of Palacios.  The three grand-children are Billy John Bentler, Lucile and Junior Wilkerson.

The members of the Presbyterian Church of which Mr. and Mrs. Bentler have been members for many years, tendered them a surprise on Monday evening, with a big feed and social gathering at the church.

One of the largest crowds to attend an affair in the history of the church annex, was there to pay homage to these honored guests, and Mr. and Mrs. Bentler were presented with a book in which there is a history of the Palacios church, names of pastors, officers and entire membership since its organizations, which they treasure very highly.  The presentation was made by W. H. Clement.

Bentler
John (1861-1939) & Martha (1860-1957)

My name is John Bentler. I was born November 13, 1861 in Bauine, Michigan. My father was Herman Bentler born in Germany and my mother was Katy Smith Bentler born in Canada. I had six brothers and sisters. I married Martha E. Rush in 1883 in Wilmont, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of Matthew Rush and Charlotte Hagen born August 10, 1860 in Wilmont, Canada. I was a carpenter and a farmer. We lived in many places before coming to Palacios. Two of our children, Raymond and William, were born in Michigan the same year, 1885. Four of our children (Nora, Earl, Beatrice and John) were born in North Dakota over the next five years. Like many others, we came to Palacios, Matagorda County around 1910. The town was new, exciting and offered many opportunities and land was cheap. I continued to farm and used my carpenter skill to build cabinets and furnishings to support my family. I died September 6, 1939 at the age of 78. My wife continued to live in Palacios. She died in Harris County in 1957. She was 97 years old. -- Palacios Cemetery Tour
