Private Ward Woodard [July 20, 1895 – July 29, 1918] was born to Henry Woodard*** [May __, 1867 – January 15, 1938] and Margaret [Gee] Woodard [December __, 1869****- November 7, 1955] at Matagorda County, Texas. He died at the Base Hospital, Camp Travis, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas from Pneumonia, lobar, left lower lobe Type IV [Probable Spanish Flu]. He was attached to Company 3, 1st Battalion, Depot Brigade, 36th (T Patch) Division. He is most likely buried at the Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery at Cedar Lake, Texas. The exact location of his grave is unknown. Besides his parents, he was survived by three brothers and three sisters. As best as can be determined from available records his family was living in the Hawkinsville/Cedar Lake area at the time of his enlistment and when he died. He gave his occupation as farmer on his draft registration card. His mother and father are buried at the Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery, the location of his father’s grave is unknown. *On the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census for Pct. 2, Matagorda County, TX his name is given as Wadsworth. If you roll the sound just right, the first syllable could sound like Ward, thus leading to a nickname of Ward accepted as a given name. **1900 Federal Census for Pct. 2, Matagorda County, TX gives birth date of June 1895. His Death Certificate only gives 1896 and his Draft Registration card gives July 20, 1895. ***Marriage license gives his name as Henry Woodman and Henry Wooderts. ****1900 Federal Census for Pct. 2, Matagorda County, TX gives her birth date as Dec 1869. On her Death Certificate it gives September 6, 1896. Her gravestone gives Bor[sic] 1872.
