He grew up in Angleton, TX and attended Elementary School in Freeport and moved to Bay City in 1953. He was one of the first students at Edith Armstrong Center, which is also known as Texana Center. He was also one of the first employees at Bay City Recycling Center. He participated in Special Olympics in Bowling & Track and Field. He was a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and currently a member of Vineyard Church. He loved to take vacations to Colorado, going camping and watching and attending Houston Astros games. He enjoyed attending church very much.

Leslie Joan Caldwell, 89, of Bay City entered the Heavenly Arms of Jesus on April 30, 2012. She was born December 28, 1922 in Azle, Texas to William Clearance Fowler and Annie Leslie Brice Fowler. She came to Bay City in 1953, and worked for several lawyers, Bossley Rice Dryers as a bookkeeper, County Clerk’s Office, District Clerk’s Office, County Treasure’s Office, and the United Way. She was President of ARC of Matagorda County, Charter Member and held many offices with St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, First Methodist Women of the Year, and was a member of The Vineyard Church. She had love for missionary work, playing the piano, and Leading the youth group. She is survived by her son Jerry Monroe Caldwell of Bay City; 2 daughters: Lilla Pauline Caldwell Etgen of Bay City; Coraglyn Coco Caldwell of Victoria; 2 grandsons: David Michael Etgen and Marvin Paul Etgen both of Bay City; brother: Pat B. Fowler of Houston; brother-in-law: Jack Lee Forest of Lake Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Otha Monroe Caldwell; grandson: Jerry Wayne Etgen; brother: Franklin Brice Fowler; and 2 sisters: Mary Ruth Forest and Hattie Lou Roseler. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Funeral Home. Lilah B. Calhoun, 77, of Blessing passed away January 8, 2013. She was born on February 19, 1935 in Wayland, New York to the late Earl and Elizabeth Burdick. She worked in the business offices of Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City and also in Palacios at Wagner General. She also worked many years in EZ Mart Convenience Store. She loved to read, watch golf and Sci Fi movies. Lilah was loved by her family and friends. Lilah is survived by: her three sons, Wayne and wife Patty Calhoun, Mark and his wife Iona Calhoun and Bruce Calhoun and girlfriend Lisa Garza; eight grandchildren, Sarah Calhoun, Jennifer and husband Timothy Bower, Nathan Calhoun, Lorianne and husband William Palmer, Becka Wilder and boyfriend Mark Ibarra, Jonathan Calhoun and Jeff Calhoun; five great-grandchildren, Nick and Marah Bower, William “Quad” Palmer, Aiden and Aubree Ibarra; two brothers, Francis Bayles and Perry Burdick. Louise “Mawzy” Baker Davis Callaway, 90, of Bay City went to her heavenly home on Saturday, December 29, 2012. She was born on October 31, 1922 in Bay City to the late Samuel Houston & Nettie Tidwell Baker. Mawzy was an avid Dallas Cowboy Football Fan. She loved George Strait. Mawzy was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. She loved to rock all the babies in her rocking chair “Big Brown”. Mawzy was a people person, who loved everyone, and everyone loved her. She is survived by her children: Karla Mansel, Dianne Stephens & husband Claude, Ben Davis II & wife Sue, Denise Frazier, Janna Johnson & husband Steve, and Jeffrey Davis & fiancée Irina; 27 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; and numerous other loving family members. Hazel Margaret (Smith) Capps, 86, of Aransas Pass, Texas died on Christmas day Tuesday, December 25, 2012. She was born August 9, 1926 in Ball, Louisiana to William and Laura May Smith. Hazel was a member of the Eastern Stars and the United Methodist Church. She was raised and educated in Houston, Texas. She set an outstanding example of a woman working outside the home to help raise her family. She was a hard worker and retired from Weingarten’s Grocery Stores as a bank teller and then from Wal-Mart in Rockport, where she was lovingly called the Wal-Mart Lady. She was a wonderful Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Mother in law, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Hazel was preceded in death by: her parents, Willie and Laura Smith; a loving husband, James Thurman Capps; brothers, Johnnie, Bill and Clarence; sisters, Lois, Margie Estelle and Jeannette; grandson, Chris; great grandson, Connor. She leaves behind to honor her memory: two daughters, Laura Welborn (Mike) of Aransas Pass, Texas and Judy Hardy (Ken) of Huntsville, Texas and her son, Larry Capps of Bay City, Texas. She was proud to say she had ten grandchildren, Rebecca and Matt Girgenti, Mike and Tiffany Hardy, Sherry and Greg Bogdan, Brian Hardy, Paul and Shanna Hardy, Lori and George Thornton, Matthew and Hollie Hardy, Mark Hardy, Jimmy and Amber Capps, Elizabeth Welborn; 23 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert Carlisle Sr; daughter, Sherri Anthony and granddaughter, Erin Anthony. William “Blane” Carlisle, 54, of Katy, Texas passed away April 20, 2012. Blane was born December 23, 1957 in Billings, Montana, to Bill Carlisle and stepmother Sue Carlisle. He is survived by: the love of his life, wife Diana Carlisle; children, Hunter Carlisle Chase and Kellie Kaiser, Amanda and Billy Thurber, Kerry Quick, Susan Richard, Cameron and Jeannie Quick; grandchildren, Ryan Bruening, Haley Thurber, Brody Kaiser, Christopher, Jennifer, James and Kade Quick; father, Bill Carlisle; sister, Leisa Carlisle and brother-in-law Steve Mahoney, brother in Christ Son, Cartwright and sister in Christ, Shari Cartwright. He is preceded in death by: his brother, Duane Carlisle and stepmother, Sue Carlisle. He had several nieces and nephews and close friends that he loved very much. Blane was loved by so many and will be missed by all. He lived his life to the fullest and was very strong in his faith. He enjoyed Cajun music, cooking, his motorcycle, his kids and grandkids, and he never failed to tell some kind of joke. He now dances the streets of gold and is face to face with our savior Jesus Christ. Funeral services for Frank Carr, former city marshall of Bay City and sheriff of Matagorda County, were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church with burial in Cedarvale Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Wright of Bay City; four sons, Tony of Bay City, Jesse Lee of Artesia, N. M., Bert of Tuckerman, Ark., and Jimmy of Newport, Ark. August 1949 Last Rites Held For Pioneer Citizen Joseph Frank Carr Tuesday afternoon at 5:30, Mr. Joseph Frank Carr, age 72, passed away at his home in this city after a long and painful illness. Funeral services were held from the First Methodist Church at 5:30 this afternoon with the Rev. W. W. Hawthorne officiating assisted by the Rev. Marvin Vance of Houston. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery, Matchett-Newman in charge. Mr. Carr is survived by his wife, Ida; one daughter, Mrs. Walton Wright of this city; four sons, Thornton of Bay City, James of Tuckerman, Ark; Jessie Lee of Artesia, N. Mex., and Bert of Newport, Ark.; one sister, Miss Fay Carr of West Columbia; four brothers, Bert of Bay City, Will of Houston, Lee of Los Angeles, Calif., Will of Hanford, Calif., and Kirk of Mercer Island, Wash.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Joseph Frank Carr was born in Iowa on December 9, 1876, and moved with his parents to Richmond, Texas, when he was 16 years old and has made Texas his home ever since. He was married to Miss Ida Thornton in Harwood, Texas, on August 19, 1896. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carr lived in the state of Washington and the Rio Grande Valley for a short time, coming to Bay City in 1901, where he entered into business. In 1920 he was elected sheriff of Matagorda County and served for two terms. In 1928 he was elected City Marshall holding that office without interruption until the last election when his health forbade running for the office. For the past 22 months he has been employed as a special investigator for the city of Bay City. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge active in the Lions Club and other civic organizations, giving unsparingly of his time when called upon. Frank Carr, devoted husband, loving father, outstanding citizen, has gone. The many friends he leaves behind extend to his family, in this their greatest hour of trial sympathy and understanding.

Long-time resident of the Bay City area, Mrs. Frank Carr has passed away at age 95. She succumbed in Matagorda General Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 17. Born in Alabama, Mrs. Carr came to Texas with her family at an early age. After her father’s death she resided with a brother in the Caney area until her marriage in 1896. The Carr’s then moved to Bay City about the turn of the century to settle and raise a family. The late Mr. Carr was at one time sheriff of Matagorda County and for many years was the city marshal. Mrs. Carr often expressed her pride in her husband’s service to the community. One of the first members of Eastern Star in Matagorda County, she also belonged to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was the oldest living member of the First United Methodist Church and worked diligently through the years in all phases of church activity. There are four living generations of Mrs. Carr’s family with three children, nine grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ida Carr CARR, Mrs. Frank, passed away on Monday, Jan. 18 in Matagorda General Hospital at age 95. Long-time resident of Bay City, Mrs. Carr was an active member of eh First United Methodist Church. The Reverend Conrad Winborn will officiate and interment will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Walton Wright of Bay City and two sons, Bert and Thornton Carr, both of Houston. Other survivors include four living generations of Mrs. Carr’s family. Pall bearers will be Jim Carr, Toney Carr, Jim Wright, Drew Burnell, Billy Burnell, Willard O’Neal and Vim X. Rye.

Memorial services for Joseph Herbert “Bert” Carr, 79, of Houston will be held 10 a. m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Welch officiating. Mr. Carr was born Oct. 25, 1911, to Joseph Francis and Ida Viola Thornton Carr in San Benito and died June 10, 1991, in a Houston hospital. As a member of the Masonic Lodge, he received a 50-year pin December 1990 in Waco, and he also belonged to the Methodist church. He is survived by two daughters, Pat Connell and Iris Seal; two grandchildren, Nicole Payne and Eric Payne; two nieces, Mary Frank Burnell and Lucille Roberts; three nephews, Tony Carr, Jim Wright and George Watters; five great-nieces and four great-nephews.

Georgie Cerny, 72, of Bay City went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 after fighting a 7-month battle with breast cancer. She was born in Fairchild, Texas on December 15, 1939 to the late Joe & Willie Mae Orsak Silhavy. Georgie loved to garden and bake for her family. She spent many hours hunting with her husband and helping him on the farm. She loved her family and animals. Cerny Albert John Cerny, 84, of Bay City passed away October 5, 2020. He was born April 12, 1936 in Blessing, TX to the late John and Hattie Cerny. Albert was a long time farmer and rancher. In his spare time, he liked to hunt and spent many years with his wife and family at their Deer Lease. Many tales were told around the campfire. He enjoyed raising cattle, making sausage & listening to polka music. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Georgie E. Cerny. Charles Lawrence “Larry” Cherry, 83, of Bay City passed away December 12, 2012. He was born May 21, 1929 in Huffman, TX to the late George Cherry and Lucy Katherine Thornbrough Cherry. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and worked for many years as maintenance supervisor at Celanese. In recent years, he enjoyed fishing and cooking and sharing both talents with friends and family. His son, Larry Eugene Cherry, preceded him in death. Born February 4, 1889, in Brentwood, Arkansas, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chesterfield Clapp, he was a long time resident of this area, having moved to Blessing with his parents in 1912. A retired postal employee of Louise, he died early Saturday, January 9, at Wagner General Hospital following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Josephine, of Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Donald Darcey of Houma, La., Mrs. Nathan Linton of Palacios, Mrs. Cassel Buckley of Lyford; a son, Harvey C. Mr. Clay was born Jan. 26, 1905 in Cedar Lane to Gus and Della Woolsey Clay and died June 2, 1993 at Matagorda General Hospital. He was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include his wife, Ethel McNeil Clay of Bay City; three daughters and a son-in-law, Verniece Holiday and Odell Clay of Bay City and Ernestine and James Lloyd of Houston; a son and daughter-in-law, Jesse James and Edna Clay of Bay City; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Della Franks of Los Angeles, Calif., Lela Law of Galveston and Lola Mayberry of Houston; a brother, Frank Clay of San Antonio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be James Clay, Jesse James Clay Jr., Henry Hicks Jr., Henry Hicks Sr., Timothy Hayes and Frank Clay. Sue Clayton, 76, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 9, 2012. She was born on January 31, 1936 in Collegeport, Texas to the late Joe Frank and Inez Blackwell Jenkins. Sue enjoyed gardening, sewing, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by: her loving husband of 48 years, James Clayton of Bay City; son, Steven Clayton; daughter, Lisa DeRosier; two grandchildren, Levi and Logan DeRosier; two great grandchildren, Violet and Gage DeRosier; three sisters, Netina Young, Nell Agnew, and Ann Reynolds; and other loving family members. Avelina “Angie” Cortines went to
rest in her Kingdom on May 5, 2012. Angie was born August 2,
1945 in George West, Texas to the late Frank and Delores Ruiz
Aguilar. Angie was a resident of Bay City for the past 22 years.
She was employed for many years at the Colorado Golf Course.
Angie was a loving mother, grandmother and wife. She always
considered others first. Many in Bay City considered her mom for
the loving way she cared for people. She is survived by her
loving family, husband Jose Vega; children, Demetrio Ruiz,
Miguel “Mike” Ruiz, Annabelle “Anna” Ruiz, Eli Cortines, Steven
Cortines, Jose Vega, Jr., Michael “Mikey” Vega, Martin Medoza

Jeanine Gauthier Crow passed away on April 23, 2012 at the age of 65 after a brief battle with cancer. She was born on January 22, 1947 in Bay City, Texas. She was preceded in death by: her parents Marvin “Frenchy” Gauthier and Albina “Bennie” Gauthier; her sons, Kenneth Quinby and David Crow; her brother, Michael Gauthier and niece, Bethany Gauthier. She is survived by: husband, Raymond Crow; her daughter, Andrea Scott and husband Brandon Scott; granddaughter, Brooke Sandoval; brother, Marvin Gauthier and wife Judy Gauthier, sister, Renee Smith, brother, Alan Gauthier, and sister, Michelle Gauthier; stepson, Norman Crow and wife Liz Crow and their children, Kaili, Rayce, and Kiana, along with nieces and nephews, Ryan Gauthier, Randi and Justin Bobbitt, Ross Gauthier, Amanda Rackel and Jonathan Rackel; sister-in-law, Yvonne and husband Harley Stivers; brother-in-law, John David Crow and wife Carolyn Crow; and sister-in-law, Doris Ann Brown; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Lydia Ryman Crowell, 56, of Wadsworth, Texas went to be with the Lord on January 26, 2013. She was a loving wife, mother, Nana, sister and friend to all who knew her. She was born December 10, 1956 to Roy Sr. and Charley Nell Ryman of Wadsworth. She will be forever loved and missed. She was preceded in death by: her parents; twin brother, Frank Ryman and sister, Linda Lou Ryman all of Wadsworth. She is survived by: her husband, Joseph Crowell whom she deeply loved and admired; three loving daughters, Stephanie Chambers (Jeremy), Natasha Chambers (Stacy), and the baby of her girls, Charley Chambers all of Wadsworth; two loving stepdaughters, Becky Crowell of Kansas and Connie Crowell of Tennessee; and six beautiful grandchildren, Alize Spradley, Kenneth Spradley, Zakylane Chambers, Allison and CJ Kachmarsky and Jessalyn Luther. She was also anticipating the arrival of two new grandbabies who are already greatly loved. She is also survived by her big brother whom she loved dearly, Roy Ryman, Jr. and his wife Chom Ryman of Wadsworth; her brother-in-law, James Crowell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three nieces; five nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2013 at Word of Life Church in Wadsworth with Melvin Ryman officiating.
