Wednesday, January 1 – 1930    Blessing

Thanks to Mr. Pierce I have another year book. A “Son of a Gun” book he calls it. I wonder if I shall record every day until the end of 1930 as I did 1929. - The new year came in rather cloudy – but no rain. A big turkey (18 lbs dressed) was roasted and a splendid dinner prepared by Mrs. Pierce and her helpers. The Yeagers (3) Mr. Powell, Miss Murphy ate dinner here. - A Mr. Nance the school Supt. came in after lunch and the 4 young folks played Bridge. - The guests stayed and ate supper in the kitchen then played more bridge. - Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Yeager and me visited and worked on the quilt.

 

 

Thursday, January 2 – Blessing

Cloudy most of the day. Have been repairing etc dresses. - John Henry went back to Rice this afternoon. - Mrs. Pierce is writing tonight. - I have written to Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Smith Buddy and Lee. - Tired tonight. Real cool air. North wind.

Friday, January 3

Pretty day. Sewing on dresses and a pajama suit for Mrs. Pierce. - We miss John Henry. - School board meeting tonight.

 

Saturday, January 4 – Blessing

Lovely day. Just sewing. - Mrs. Beard came up awhile this P. M. - Mr. Pierce and the Highway man and two others went to Sargent since lunch. - Mrs. Pierce and me with William to drive went to Bay City this PM late. - We ate oyster stew, visited the Beauty Parlor, went to see “Four Feathers,” drank hot chocolate, had the car worked on, hunted William and arrived at home before 12 o’clock tonight.

Sunday, January 5 – Palacios

Grand day. - Put the house in order, ate lunch. - Mrs. Beard came up this P. M. - Then Mrs. Pierce brought me home, we went on down to see Mrs. Farwell, then came home. Mrs. Pierce helped me upstairs with my luggage. - Then had to hurry home before dark. - I went up to the Tabernacle tonight. - A good congregation was present – The sermon theme being “Which Way?” Rev. Williams (Lester)
 

 

Monday, January 6 – Palacios

Beautiful day. Took some hemstitching to Mrs. Aubin. Went to town to find out the amount of my tax. - Came home and washed a little. Was busy all forenoon. - Mrs. Barton came awhile this afternoon. Then I went to the P. O. found a letter from Mrs. Smith and a check from the money she has invested for me. - Wrote to her, took the letter to the P. O. then went to Mrs. Aubin’s for the hemstitching. Saw Mr. Foster. He gets in early now. Mrs. F. went back to Houston Friday. She is better, but Mrs. Gripp is not well, an operation on her face is causing her distress. - Am to sew out at the Reservation tomorrow.

 

Tuesday, January 7 – Palacios

Cloudy day, some rain fell. - Mrs. Barton came for me this morning 8:30 and I made slip covers for her. Mrs. Lemon and Mrs. Barton Sr. are with her now. Ate a good dinner. - At 5:30 Mrs. Barton brought me home. We truly appreciate the cement road when it is rainy weather. - Ate my supper, trimmed the picot on the hem of Mrs. Pierce’s dress, then rolled it up ready to mail to her tomorrow. - Darned by stockings and am ready for bed. Read tired tonight.  - Rather cool but not a norther.

 

Wednesday, January 8 – Palacios

Rainy day. Spent it out at Mrs. Barton’s. Finished the slip covers. - Mrs. Barton brought me home in the rain. - I mailed Mrs. Pierce’s skirt to her this morning. - After supper I went up to the tabernacle to prayer meeting. - There were only five there. - After meeting we practiced some songs. - Raining real hard now, 10 o’clock. - Sleepy and tired.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 9,

A cold rainy day. Mrs. Barton came for me this morning but I did not go with her. It seemed so cold and I had work to do at home. Have been cleaning house a little. Swept and dusted and put things in their places somewhat. Have kept a good fire burning all day. Cut out a paper pattern for Albert’s pajamas this PM and went to town for some food. Saw Mr. Foster this evening. - Mrs. Gripp’s trouble seems better. Mrs. Foster may come home the last of the week. Recd Cemetery dues notice this P.M. $2.00 per yr. - Hope the weather will moderate tomorrow. Does not seem cold enough to freeze tonight. - Have written a long letter to the Bells tonight, and put the hot water bottle in the bed. - Now I am going to the hot water bottle. - Wind blowing real hard from the north but not raining since dark.

 

Friday, January 10

Cold rainy day. Sewed on Mrs. Pierce’s pajamas. They are ready for Mrs. Aubin to hemstitch. - Mrs. Barton came this forenoon. Went to the Richard’s home tonight to Central prayer meeting. - Mrs. Hanks was buried this afternoon. Cold, misty almost freezing. - Susie spent the day with me. - Letter from Mrs. Stoddard. - (Turned the water off tonight.) Mr. Newsom did it. - Mr. Bruse hung the globe light in my dining room this afternoon. Makes a pretty light I think.

Saturday, January 11

Paid Cemetery dues, also State and Co Taxes today. Am so thankful for my blessings. - This has been a cloudy, foggy, misty day but no real rain. Had to go to town this forenoon. Recut the pattern for Albert’s pajamas and cut them out. Put in a good half day on them. - So much measuring and messing around to get them like the ready made ones which I am copying. Mrs. Farwell came up this afternoon. Later I went to the P.O. Recd a long letter from Marguerite. - Mr. Foster is expecting her home tomorrow. Susie spent the day with me. - Took Mrs. Pierce’s pajamas to Mrs. DeAubin this forenoon. Shall take a bath and go to bed.

 

Sunday, January 12 – Mr. Jno. T. & Mr. Farwell Birthday

Cloudy and misty today and tonight tho much warmer and so thankful for warmer weather. - Went to church this forenoon. - Made a lemon pie too. Crust tough as tripe but filling fine. - Cut out a piece for myself and took the balance over to the Foster house. She came home at 1:30. Have not seen her. Went to church and BYPU tonight. Was leader in BYPU. Have a fine Union, and a good congregation for Preaching service. - His sermon theme was “Slaughter house religion.” We sang “How Wonderful.” - The Newsom Radio gave a fine concert tonight. - So tired.

Monday, January 13

Mostly cloudy and foggy this forenoon but some welcome sunshine this P.M. Slept rather late this morning. - Did not begin sewing until late. Worked on Albert’s pajamas. Have the blue coat finished. Am not to work the buttonholes. Went to Mrs. DeAubin’s for Mrs. Pierce’s hemstitching. Then to the P.O. Receipt for Cemetery dues was my mail. Rather a receipt ____ ____ tho. Since supper I turned the hems on my curtains for the east rooms. (Mrs. Barton’s donation long ago.) - Have not seen Mrs. Foster today. He said she was fairly well. - Have just a little fire in the stove tonight. - Am so tired every night. Not much account.

 

Tuesday, January 14

Not a very pleasant day. So much fog. Some sunshine tho. -  Sewed on Mrs. Pierce’s pajamas this P.M. Hemmed my curtains this forenoon. - Mrs. Farwell came up and we made her chintz curtains. - Mrs. Barton came a couple of times today. She and the General called on the Newsoms tonight. Mrs. Newsom was working tho. - I have written to Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Stoddard, Mrs. Benton tonight. - Am going to bed tired. A north wind is blowing tonight but is not cold yet.

 

 Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Newsom rented the lower floor of Nellie's house.
Mr. Newsom was a teacher and later school superintendent.


Wednesday, January 15

Cold cold day. Just sewing. - Mrs. Farwell came up this afternoon and we made her chintz kitchen curtains. - Went to prayer meeting tonight. Good congregation. - Read,  tired. - So thankful for my wood and comfortable rooms. - Mr. Haughton sawed some of the long wood in two this evening.

 

Thursday, January 16

Cold day. Sewed all day. Finished all of the pajama suits. Mrs. Barton took her two (Albert’s) and I hope to send Mrs. Pierce’s to her tomorrow. - Recd a long letter from Mrs. Pierce telling of her trip to the Picture Banquet etc in Houston. - Recd a letter and check for $43.05 from Mrs. Smith. - Int. on money she invested for me. - Went for a little drive with Mrs. Barton this evening. - Since supper have cut out six prs. trunks for Albert. - Going to bed now. - Wind gone down, much warmer.

 

Friday, January 17

Cold wind blowing all day and some rain. Northwest. Severe weather in the north. Sent letter to Mrs. Smith this noon. - No company today. - Ironed some. Sewed some. - Pressed Mrs. Pierce’s pajamas and have them in a box ready to send to her tomorrow. - Went over to Mrs. Richard’s home tonight to prayer meeting. The wind was from the north, freezing. A good crowd was out. - Mr. Newsom turned the water off tonight. Am hoping the pipes all drained for it is very very cold now at ten o’clock. - But it is still cloudy.

 

Saturday, January 18

So cold this morning. Everything froze. Even the water in the house in pitchers, pails, etc. And such a strong wind blowing from the north west I could hardly keep wood enough in the stove to keep the room warm. - Went to town this forenoon and paid the city and school taxes. - Found the State and Co receipts had come back. So I have that done once more. - Took the receipts for the cottage to Mr. Foster this evening. Have sewed some today on trunks. Mailed Mrs. Pierce’s pajamas to her. - No company today. Too cold tho it is much warmer tonight. No water came upstairs today but Mr. Newsom got the kitchen sink open. Citrus trees must all be dead. So glad the wind has gone down entirely. Much warmer.

 

Sunday, January 19

Wind from the northeast and pretty cool this morning. Ice melting at noon and the water is running in all of the faucets. So glad no pipes broke. - Went to Church this forenoon. Pastor unable to preach (sore throat). - Business meeting consumed preaching time. - After dinner I rested and prepared my part on the BYPU program tonight. Then I went to the P.O. and from there to Mrs. Farwell’s. Just missed Mr. and Mrs. Pierce there. - On account of the painting in her kitchen not being finished I shall not sew for her until Tuesday. - Went to BYPU. Good attendance. Good program. “Little Brown Church in the Wildwood.” Pastor gave a short talk. Not well. Throat quite troublesome. Cloudy foggy night. - Naomi was at church with her baby.

Monday, January 20 – Mother very sick 2 yrs ago

Foggy damp morning. Northeast wind. Mrs. Newsom did not go to work today. Is having some throat trouble. Mr. Newsom discovered a leak in the bathtub pipe yesterday P.M. but he repaired it himself. Many many pipes busted yesterday. I did some mending for myself this forenoon and worked a little on trunks. Since dinner it began to rain and rained very hard until almost dark. - This afternoon I sent some woolen stockings to Mrs. Lee and some cream colored serge goods to Marguerite and took some things to Mrs. Baldwin to make over for her children. I went to the P.O. - Read a letter from Mrs. Bell. Miss Lee has lost her position. I am so sorry. - Mrs. R. J. Hill died this morning. I did not know that she was sick. Was so shocked. Local late tonight 7:15. - Not raining now at bedtime but another norther warming sent out. Poor gulf coast country gets so many slams.

Tuesday, January 21 Mother Oct 4th, 1844 – Mother 1928

Cold and rainy. Colder tonight but not raining. Weather much like it was two years ago tonight. Mother had gone then. - I went down to Mrs. Farwell’s this forenoon, but she and Mr. Farwell were going to Mrs. Hill’s funeral so I came back home and after lunch went again. Such a cold rainy time. - We did some cutting out and I came home about 4:30 because it was so cold. - Found Mr. Newsom had come and was getting things ready to turn the water off. - Mrs. Newsom worked today. Sewed some on trunks since supper. - Mrs. Barton came a little while this forenoon after I had been down to Mrs. Farwell’s. - Have put the hot water bottle in the bed and am going to it now. Letter from Mrs. Stoddard today.  - Sent a short note to Mrs. Bell at noon.

 

Wednesday, January 22

Such a cold dreadful day. - Sewed on slip covers for Mrs. Farwell’s Morris chair this forenoon then went down to her home after lunch and we cut out Mr. Farwell’s blanket bath robe. I came home about 5:30 and the weather was still very cold. Sewed on trunks tonight. A fine radio concert was on tonight from Chicago. The tabernacle was lighted tonight and I went up but there was no one in the church yet so I hurried back home. So cold. Am thankful for wood and a good bed and such marvelous health.

 

Thursday, January 23

Such a beautiful day after the cold. Sun shone all day and it began thawing at ten o’clock this forenoon. Sewing for Mrs. Farwell all day here at home. Took some work home tonight and found a letter in the PO from Mrs. Pierce. She is trying to send Josephine Artis to an aunt in Nebraska. Will need sewing help in the effort soon. - So thankful for the warm day tho the fruit may all be killed and many of the palms and trees. - Had Mr. Houghton saw some more of my long wood in two this forenoon. - Sewing on the last pair of trunks tonight. - Note to Mrs. Pierce.

 

Friday, January 24

Sunshine about all day. - Sewed at the Farwell home all day. Did not finish Mrs. F’s breakfast coat, but shall not go back tomorrow. We both want to clean house. - Found a letter from Mrs. Pierce in the PO. She will be ready for the “Josephine sewing bee” soon. I took the letter to Mrs. F. to read. Then went back to the P.O. and sent a card to Mrs. Pierce. - So tired when I finally ate my supper. Then I went over to Mrs. Richards to meeting-18 present. Mr. Richards is not well. High blood pressure. - Cold raw wind. East to north. - Taking the hot water bottle for my feet’s bed fellow. - Tired

Saturday, January 25

Much cloudy sky today. I cleaned house some. Did a large washing and ironing. Went to town this P. M. and finished giving in my property. Wish I had the floor I am now occupying on the ground some place and it was all I owned. Mrs. Barton came awhile this afternoon. I am so tired tonight I can’t think, but glad things are cleaned up a bit.

 

Sunday, January 26 – Blessing

Cloudy cold day. Went to church this forenoon. Mrs. Lemmon went with me. - Mrs. Barton’s car stuck in the mud in front of my house when she came for her mother after church. - Called to see Mrs. Foster after church. They have rented their apartment to the _____ _____  ____ RR man. [blanks were in the diary] -  After lunch I wrote to Mrs. Gripp. -  Mrs. Pierce came and is ready for me to sew for Josephine. So Mrs. Farwell and me came home with her. Rained on us about all of the way up here. - She hopes to start on the Nebraska trip soon.

 

Monday, January 27 – Blessing

Cold cloudy day. - Mrs. Pierce had been making all kinds of effort to get Josephine into town and was quite in despair when lo and behold her uncle and brother brought her in today. Such a sight as she was. Mrs. Pierce fed them all and then gave the child a bath and put clothes on her. - A board meeting tonight while we sewed and played school with Josephine.

 

Tuesday, January 28 – Blessing

Rainy day. A real storm since noon during which Mr. Pierce started to Sargent. We had to sew by electric light all day. - Josephine is a restless child. We have an abundance of clothing to make over for her and Mrs. Cornelius is bringing more, and money also. - Phone to Mrs. Helander about Pauline going to their people also. She approved it.

 

Wednesday, January 29

Weather moderating but cold yet and water everywhere. - Streets are almost impassable. - Mrs. Helander sent Pauline up by this afternoon’s train. So we are sewing for her also. - Mrs. Cornelius and Mrs. Duller are helping, also Mrs. Lucas. - Are sewing very hard. Washed, ironed and sewed late tonight. - Mr. Pierce came home from Sargent tonight.

 

Thursday, January 30 – Blessing

Beautiful day. - Getting the girls and Mrs. Pierce off on the 4 o’clock train. - Girls all excited. Up at day break romping around. - Mrs. Farwell and me sewed and pressed up to the last minute. - The girls looked well in their new clothing and were willing to go. Mrs. Cornelius drove Mrs. Farwell and me down to the depot to see them off. Poor tired Mrs. Pierce. - Just too tired to move. Going to bed.

 

Friday, January 31 – Blessing

Began on the third floor and cleaned the house. Mrs. Farwell and me. - William fed us well and we surely worked up appetites. - Cloudy most of the day. - Wonder where the travelers are. Card from Mrs. Pierce written in Houston last night. - Just tired. Going to bed.

Saturday, February 1 – Blessing

Misty day. Cleaned the house a little. - Fixed Mrs. Pierce’s striped silk dress where it had ripped out in the back. Cut out dust cloths and hemmed some of them tonight. - Listened to the Radio until late. Wonder where Mrs. Pierce and the two wild ones are tonight. - Wish I had my mail. - Tired. Tired.

 

Sunday, February 2 – Blessing

Cloudy all forenoon. - Ground hog day. He saw his shadow about noon. - We were just lazy today. William gave us a chicken dinner and we ate a band out for supper. - Fine radio concert tonight.

 

Monday, February 3

Cloudy all day and a regular down pour before noon. Almost a cloud burst it seemed. - Had to send Mr. Pierce’s lunch to him, the streets were so flooded. - Mrs. Farwell was taken real sick about midnight, her stomach. She has been dozing all day and feels some better tonight. - Mrs. Pierce is on her way home, to be here tomorrow noon. - Letter from Mrs. Barton

 

Tuesday, February 4 - Blessing

Much pleasanter today tho some cloudy yet. - Mrs. Farwell was feeling some better today and we put the house in order for Mrs. Pierce’s homecoming. - She was glad to get home and her household was glad to have her at home again. - Her trip was quite an adventure.

 

Wednesday, February 5 – Blessing

Beautiful day. Mrs. Farwell went home on the noon train today. Miss her. - Mrs. Pierce took a load of ball players down to Palacios this afternoon. - Cut out the white dress this P.M. Recd four letters from the Palacios P.O. today. - Mr. Pierce went to Sargent this P.M. - Mr. and Mrs. Beard and son spent the evening with us. - Tired.

 

Thursday, February 6 – Blessing

Grand day. Have been making pillows smaller and more of them by taking out some of the feathers. - Mrs. Pierce has been house cleaning and baking all day. - We are tired tonight.

 

Friday, February 7

Such a splendid day. Finished pillows and helped put the house in order for the Guests—Mrs. Van Bergin [Bergen] and two children. - Mrs. Pierce went to a bridge party tonight. She was very tired too. - I finished a book, “God’s Step children.” - So thankful for the lovely weather. I am to sleep in the north room tonight. Bed large enough for four people my size.

Saturday, February 8 – Palacios

Grand day. Sunshine and warm. - Mrs. Pierce went to Bay City this forenoon. William toted my bag down to the depot and I came home on the 12:15 train. - Have paid my insurance for 1930. $11.99 for $1500.00. Fixed the sleeves in Albert’s coat for Mrs. Barton, also sleeves in a dress for her. - Mr. and Mrs. Farwell came up this afternoon. Brought me a rag carpet rug for my dining room. Also a sleeve board. Mrs. F. is not well. Mr. Foster came over tonight and brought a note for $400.00. Also $25 refund on the Tax which I paid on the property they bought from me. - Recd letter from Marguerite. - Washed some underwear and hose since supper. - Glad to be at home.

Sunday, February 9 – Blessing

Beautiful day. Slept late. Beatrice called before I had fully dressed. - Went to church. The pastor was there, also his wife. A young man of the congregation supplied for the pastor. Made a good talk (Elisha & Elijah). - A good congregation was present. Mr. Richards is quite ill. - Mrs. Pierce came down for me late this afternoon. - We went to see “The King of Kings” tonight. I had been anxious to see it. Am sorry I saw it now, because it seemed to me irreverent. No human being has the right to impersonate Christ. - Mr. Pierce went to Sargent today, but was at home when we returned.

 

Monday, February 10 – Blessing

Windy day. Cut out dotted swiss today and fitted two dresses. - Then helped some about putting the house in order. - Mrs. Pierce went to a party at Walkers, across the Brownsville track. - Went to bed early. Tired. Am not much account for house work.

 

Tuesday, February 11

Pretty day. Mrs. Farwell came up to stay with me while Mrs. Pierce goes to Houston to meet her sister. - Mrs. Yeager spent the afternoon here. I cut out a green silk dress this afternoon. - Mrs. Farwell brought some sewing along and is working on a silk night gown for Mrs. Pierce. A last year’s Christmas gift. - Mrs. Pierce entertained a meeting of the School Board tonight and then goes to Houston on the 4 o’clock train in the morning. - Me and my Flapper Sister are going to bed tired.

 

Wednesday, February 12 - Blessing

Pretty day. Mrs. Pierce left on the early train. We took care of the laundry and mending and I cut out the white silk dress. Mrs. Farwell did some baking. - Mr. Pierce took all of my small amounts of checks, deposits, currency, etc. amounting in all to $705.00 and sent it to Mrs. Smith for me. - I wrote to her tonight. - Head a good radio concert tonight. – To bed.

 

Thursday, February 13 – Blessing

Pretty day. William worked in the yard this forenoon. Mrs. F. and me(?) baked, cleaned house, cooked a good dinner and listened to a good radio concert tonight until 11 o’clock when Mrs. Pierce and her guests arrived. All tired and soon ready for bed. - Mrs. Van Bergin is not well, but the two children sure husky. - Late bed time for two old flappers.

 

Friday, February 14 – Blessing

Beautiful day. - Good to have Mrs. Pierce at home. - Mr. Farwell came up to lunch and took Mrs. Farwell home with him. - Much company tonight. Dullers – Beards - Helped the children play dominoes. - Have four dresses underway

 

Saturday, February 15 – Palacios

Pretty sunshine but strong northeast wind. - Mrs. Pierce and company brought me home this P.M. Mr. and Mrs. Farwell were just starting up to Blessing as we came into town. - Have done much running around since I came home. - Over to see the Richards. He is much better temporarily (heart trouble). - Several trips to the Houghtons. Down to the Farwell home. Out to Mr. Martin’s. Up to Mrs. Hockey’s. - Over to the M. E. Church to a revival meeting. - Tired and going to bed.

Sunday, February 16 – Blessing

Lovely day. Slept well after my strenuous afternoon. - Went to Church. Good congregation, good sermon by our pastor. - Mr. Richards able to be out. - Bro. Williams and wife came to see me a few minutes after lunch. They are to use my double mattress and I gave them a pair of pillows. - Mrs. Barton came since lunch and took me for a drive in her new Franklin Coupe. Beautiful car. - Mrs. Pierce and guests came for me about 5 o’clock. After reaching Blessing we drove back to Pheasant to see the cement pouring on the Highway. Then ate lunch in the kitchen. Then to the movie “All at Sea.”

 

Monday, February 17 - Blessing

Such a cold windy day. The house was so cold that Mrs. Pierce had the furnace started. - Sewing on silk dresses today. Also some mending. - Wrote to Lee Berry tonight.

 

Tuesday, February 18 – Blessing

Beautiful sunshine but cold east wind. - Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Van Bergin took the Christmas tree in the Community House down today. - Then the Mortons came and then the Farwells. - While we were eating dinner tonight a phone message came saying that Mr. Plez Dawdy had died. - Mr. and Mrs. Pierce went to the home. - Wrote to the Haywoods tonight.

Wednesday, February 19 – Blessing

Cold raw day. Fire in the furnace tho the sun shone all day. - Finished the green dress. - Wrote to Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Stoddard tonight. - So tired.

Real cool day tho the sun shone. - Mr. Dawdy was buried at Palacios today. - Mr. Borden ate lunch here today. - Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Van Bergin attending a Bridge party at Mr. Powell’s tonight. - Wrote to Aunt Mira and Mrs. Bell.

 

Friday, February 21 – Blessing

Very good day. Sewed on many things today. - Mrs. P and Mrs. Van B went to Palacios tonight to attend a Masonic and Eastern Star Banquet. - John Henry is to come home tonight. - Mr. Pierce went to the warehouse and office tonight. - The two Van B. kiddies and me are going to bed.

 

Saturday, February 22 – Blessing

Washington’s Birthday - Pretty day but some cloudy. - John Henry came last night. - White silk finished. Dotted swiss also. - Mrs. Barton came for me but I did not go home. - The Bartons go to Houston to live soon.

 

Sunday, February 23 – Blessing

Very foggy. Almost a rain all forenoon. - We took lunch and all went to Sargent. John Henry driving his mother’s car from the store at Sargent over to the beach. The roads were dreadful. The sun came out while we were on the beach. A high tide was in but we found many beautiful shells and some crabs for Dickey’s collection. We ate lunch at the beach and then started back home. Stopped at Sargent a little while and went down to the river. - Then came home and ate some supper. Then to picture show. - John Henry has to go back to school at 4 o’clock in the morning.

 

Monday, February 24 – Blessing

Cloudy misty day. - Went to Palacios on the local which was very late. My errand down was to put things in order for Mr. and Mrs. Barton to spend a few days in my rooms if they care to. - Was after dark getting here. Then had to run over to Mrs. Farwell’s. Reached there just as Mr. and Mrs. Pierce drove up. They all went to the High School to the Gump Zanders Wedding. - Then I came back to Blessing with Mr. and Mrs. Pierce.

Tuesday, February 25 – Blessing

Pretty day after a norther blew over. The Family except Jane Lee and me went down to the Farwells to eat a duck dinner tonight. We two declined the invitation on account of “old age” and “youth.” - Mrs. Dunn called up wanting me to go to Houston with her tomorrow. - Too busy.

 

Wednesday, February 26 – Blessing

Real cold day. Sewing. Sewing. - Mr. and Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Van B are dining at the Yeager home tonight. - Me and the two kiddies are at home and will soon be tucked in our little beds. - Good fire in the fire place tonight.

 

Thursday, February 27 – Nellie 1868 – 62 years old today

Such a cold dreary east wind to day. My birthday. 62 years old. - Mr. and Mrs. Farwell drove up this afternoon and got caught in a rain to go home in. - Just before dark a norther blew up and it rained harder than ever. Mrs. Van B has been sick all day. Stomach. - Mr. P went to Sargent and back today. - Letter from Mrs. Smith enclosing $5.00 refund from the last amount I sent her to invest for me. Also a letter from West and Co. North American Trust. - A Bohemian girl came today to work for Mrs. Pierce.

 

Friday, February 28 – Blessing

Cold in the house and foggy all forenoon. Sun shone after lunch. - Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Van B went to Bay City by train this afternoon to dinner at the Corbet home. - Mrs. Lucas spent a couple of hours with me this P.M. - Mr. Pierce was to have dinner over to the dining tonight but was detained too late at the office. - Willie met the sisters on the 11 o’clock train tonight. - Mrs. Van B is feeling better. - Sewing. Sewing.

Saturday, March 1 – Palacios

Cold day and rainy too. -    Sewed all forenoon then came home on the Local. Arrived here about 4 o’clock. Did my running around down town and got some food for tomorrow. Went over to see how Mr. Houghton is getting along painting the single bed stead I got from the Farwells. - Got some supper. Saw Mrs. Barton at a distance. Mrs. Newsom says they expect to go to Houston tomorrow. Did not come into my rooms. Stayed at the Kimball home I guess. I stopped at Mrs. Helander’s where I got off of the train because it was raining. Found Mrs. Williams sick in bed, but better. They hope to go to house keeping Monday. Am tired tonight. Glad to be at home for a short time even. - Radio concert by the Newsoms.

 

Sunday, March 2 – Palacios

A day at home. Slept very late then went up to the Tabernacle to church. Good sermon by the pastor. - Rested all day. Went to church again at night. Good congregation and another good sermon. - Mrs. Williams, who was sick all of last week, was out today. - Did not see Mrs. Barton tho she was in town yesterday P.M. - Heard she was returning to Houston today. - Don’t think I shall try to go to Blessing by freight in the morning. So cold and a new norther has blown down upon us.

 

Monday, March 3 – Blessing – Texas Independence [She was close.]

Cold clear day. Washed a few things. They got dry as I ironed them too. - Mr. Houghton mowed the lawn this forenoon. - Came up to Blessing on the passenger train this P.M. - Mrs. Pierce met me. I joined the house cleaning brigade preparatory to the Library Ladies Luncheon to be given by Mrs. Pierce complimenting her sister. - Tired bunch tonight.

 

Tuesday, March 4 – Blessing

Pretty day but cold. - The Luncheon came off beautifully. There were 14 present. After lunch was served, a meeting was held to discuss ways and means for an oyster supper to raise money for the Library Association debts. - Mr. and Mrs. Farwell drove up this forenoon to get some cottage cheese. They are entertaining the domino gang and their wives tonight at dinner. - Did not sew today. All are tired tonight. Joined the Library Association today.

 

Wednesday, March 5 – Blessing

All day study class at Mrs. Yeager’s today. Mrs. Van B. did not feel able to attend. Mrs. Pierce went over about 8 o’clock P.M. - I finished the white voile dress today and did some good mending. - Went with Mrs. P. to hear Rev. Engle preach tonight in the Presbyterian Church. - Came home and listened to a Radio concert until midnight.

Thursday, March 6 – Blessing

Cloudy morning with a west wind and almost misting. - We were busy all day (did a little sewing) getting things in order for a Bridge Luncheon tomorrow. We worked in the kitchen and at night set the tables up. - Mrs. Farwell came up late this evening to stay a few days. - All tired.

 

Friday, March 7 – Father born March 12th, 1843 – Father died 1899

A pretty day finally. My how we all worked all forenoon. - Some disappointments about things ordered from Bay City, but the gang was on hand at the appointed time to eat and I am sure they were all well filled. - They seemed to have a good time at Bridge until 5 o’clock. - There were six tables, most of them from Palacios. - Then at night the Blessing Bridge Club came. Five tables and three over. - Mr. Pierce went to Sargent.

 

Saturday, March 8 – Blessing

Mrs. Pierce and others went to Bay City to Federation of Clubs meeting today. - Mrs. Farwell and Mrs. Van B. were too tired to go. - I sewed all day. Mr. Pierce Withers came, unexpectedly, late this P.M. - Mrs. Pierce was late getting home from Bay City. - Mrs. Gill was sick. - The Beards spent the evening. - All tired.

 

Sunday, March 9 – Blessing

Lovely day. - Mr. Withers remained until P. M. - Mr. Farwell came up to dinner. - The Hurds came (2 couple) while we were at dinner (12 o’clock). - Later we all drove to Palacios. Visited the Green Lantern. - Mrs. Farwell came back with us. We all went to the Picture Show at night.

Very good day. Some cloudy and misty. Sewed all day. - Mr. F. came up for her this P.M.  - Mrs. Pierce took an inventory of her dresses today. - Some to discard. Some to alter. - Card from Mrs. Barton today.

 

Tuesday, March 11 – Blessing

Cloudy day and continued cool. - Repairing dresses. - Worked tonight on literature for an oyster supper to be held in the Community House Saturday night.

 

Wednesday, March 12 – Blessing

Sunshine and clouds. A sprinkle of rain late this evening. - Sewing all day. - Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Van Bergen went to Bay City this P.M. Took Dickey to have a hair cut. - Mr. Pierce went to Houston. - Mr. and Mrs. Farwell came up late this evening to return Mrs. Pierce’s coat. - Board meeting tonight. Cold enough to have a good fire in the fire place.

 

Thursday, March 13 – Blessing

Cold again today. I have taken a severe cold. Am taking some of Mrs. Van B. tablets. Feel quite bum.  All hands worked all over the house today, and tonight entertained at dinner, two couples of Hurds also Mr. and Mrs. Harden of the road construction gang. - All tired and going to bed at 11 o’clock. - Rained some today. - The guests got stuck in the mud coming over from Collegeport tonight.

 

Friday, March 14 – Blessing

Some rain today. - Mr. Pierce went to Sargent and returned today. - Mrs. Pierce was busy at the Community House all afternoon. - Mrs. Van B. cut out a dress for Jane Lee this P.M. - I worked on making over dresses all day. - We are alone this evening for a change. - Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Van B. played and sang some tonight. - Expect to go home tomorrow. Will miss the oyster supper and the drawing of numbers for bed spread.

Saturday, March 15 – Palacios – Letter from Mrs. Shaw

Well I came home at noon. Washed in salt water 8 gallons of oysters this forenoon. Mrs. Pierce’s kitchen was a busy place getting ready for the supper tonight. - A telephone message came to her from Houston saying the Artis girls were there and would to be in Blessing tonight. - Since I came home I have brought my single bed home from Houghtons (he had painted it) and my mattress was here to put on it, so I will sleep on it tonight. Mrs. Helander called this P.M. about the Artis girls. - I went to the postponed Waffle supper tonight. Tough cold waffles. Weak coffee and blue milk. 25 cents worth. Less than nothing. - Wish I had stayed in Blessing.

 

Sunday, March 16 – Palacios

At home. Cloudy day. Slept fairly well last night in spite of the leather waffle. - Mr. Foster helped me take my feather beds over and put them in my two trunks in a closet in the Foster home. My small bed is very comfortable. - Went to church twice today. Pauline was out to services with Mrs. Helander. - Have rested all afternoon.  - Go to Blessing by freight in the morning.

 

Monday, March 17 – Blessing

Came up on the freight this morning. - Sewing hard all day. - Mr. Pierce is in Sargent tonight.

 

Tuesday, March 18

Cloudy day and some rain. - Letting out and down dresses all day. Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Van B. went to a Bridge Luncheon given in Mrs. Van Bergen’s honor by Mrs. Duller. - Mrs. Pierce went to a nominating meeting at the Community House tonight. - A norther blew down just before dark. Not cold yet.

 

Wednesday, March 19 – Blessing

Pretty day but cold. Fire in the fireplace and furnace too. - Mr. Farwell brought Mrs. F. up to stay while Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Van B. and Dickey go to Corpus Christi.

 

Thursday, March 20

Pretty day. Some warmer. - We were all very busy until the travelers got away on the noon train for Corpus. - Then we sewed all afternoon. - Jane Lee seems quite resigned to stay at home. - We found a four leafed clover. Jane will sleep with it under her pillow. - Jane Lee and me will sleep out on the sleeping porch.

 

Friday, March 21

Cloudy day and some showers. - No school on account of County Meet at Bay City. - Jane has been sewing this P.M. - Mr. Farwell came up to bring mail for Mrs. Farwell

 

Saturday, March 22 – Blessing

Such a busy day and a real cool one. - We sewed all day in the attic (as Jane Lee calls it). - She made a quilt for her doll. - We were all very tired and after baths are rolling into our beds.

 

Sunday, March 23 – Blessing  Mr. Webb June 19th, 1857 – Mr. Webb 1918

Mr. Pierce went to Sargent this forenoon. - Jane Lee and me hunted some more four leaf clovers after breakfast. Mrs. Farwell did some baking. - I picked up some in the sewing room. Willie gave us an early lunch. Then time passed rather slowly until four o’clock when the travelers returned from their trip. All tired and glad to be at home. - We went for a little drive out to the underpass and then went to the picture show. - Glad to go to bed.

 

Monday, March 24 – Palacios

Real cold day but mostly sunshine. - Sewed pretty hard to get Mrs. Pierce’s work finished before coming home this P. M. - Mr. Farwell came up this afternoon and brought us down. - I am through in Blessing for some time I suppose. - Mrs. Van B. and children go home Tuesday of next week. Mrs. Pierce going part way with them. - I feel as tho I had left home. Ate supper at Café. - Am thankful tho for my own home and its comforts. - Read a letter from Mrs. Bell today. - Tired tonight. - Go to Mrs. Farwell tomorrow.

 

Tuesday, March 25 – Palacios

Real cool all day. Slept as good last night after my hearty steak supper. - Went down to sew for Mrs. Farwell today. They had a fire in the furnace all forenoon. We sewed upstairs. A fine sewing room and our work went along beautifully. - Ate dinner at Mrs. Milam’s. - Miss Mitchell came this afternoon and I ordered some dress goods from her. She is leaving Palacios the 1st of May. - Went to the Presbyterian Church tonight to hear an Evangelist preacher speak. A Presbyterian revival is quite a novelty. - Came home with Mrs. Newsom.

Cold day. - Sewed at Mrs. Farwell’s. Fire in the furnace. - Short prayer meeting on acct of Presbyterian meeting. - Letter from Mrs. Stoddard. - Stopped at Boyd’s to have my glasses straightened. Hope to get some new ones some day.

 

Thursday, March 27 – Palacios

Cloudy all day. - Misting when I went to work and raining hard when I came home. - Getting along well with the sewing. - Mrs. F. gave me a blouse today. I shall have to get a skirt to wear it with. - Paid Mr. Houghton 1.00 for mowing lawn etc while I was in Blessing. - Writing to Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Stoddard tonight. - Good fire in my stove. - Cold north wind.

 

Friday, March 28 – Palacios

Cold day but all sunshine. - Sewed for Mrs. Farwell. - Fire in the furnace. - Dinner at Mrs. Milam’s. - Sewing going on well. - Came home tired, but after supper I did a little washing and read the Beacon. - Mrs. Farwell gave me a bouquet of beautiful red roses. - Going to bed now. This has been a cold March.

 

 


Saturday, March 29 – Palacios

This morning promised a lovely day, but the clouds came over and a real hard shower fell since dinner. - The sewing goes merrily on. I am tired now at 10 o’clock. After coming from work I did some house cleaning and wiped the floor in my kitchen. The house is so dusty but not filthy, thank goodness. - Would have worked later but the Newsoms came home and went to bed, so I will follow suit. - Letter from Mrs. Shaw. They are in Galveston again.

 

Sunday, March 30 – Palacios

Beautiful cool sunshiny day. - I slept fairly well last night in spite of being so tired. - No place quite like home. - Went to church this forenoon. Bro. Williams gave us a good sermon. Then I came home and dusted some, etc. The rooms look some better. - I wrote to Mrs. Shaw. Mailed the letter. Came home and rested until BYPU time. There was no preaching service at our church on account of the Presbyterian Revival. - Saw Mrs. Brown home and am going to bed. - Ready for the fray tomorrow.

 

Monday, March 31 – Palacios

Pretty forenoon, but late this P. M. it clouded over and looks rainy. - Sewed for Mrs. Farwell until 4:30 then Mr. Farwell drove up to Blessing. - Mrs. Pierce and her sister and children are leaving tomorrow 4 P.M. Mrs. Van Bergen and the children for home and Mrs. Pierce to New Orleans to a picture exhibit. - When I arrived at home I found Mrs. Dunn’s card saying she will be down tomorrow. - Have done some wiping up and dusting tonight.

Tuesday, April 1 – Palacios

A cloudy Fools Day. - Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Winnie Phillips came this forenoon about 9 o’clock. Brought a lot of sewing, among other things a velvet lounging suit pajamas, black velvet lined with Chinese red.  Very grand. - They came again after noon bringing things of Winnie’s to be lengthened and the belts enlarged. - I am tired, tired tonight. Been on my feet all day. - Real cloudy tonight a south wind. No fire in my heater all day. Glad the weather is warmer. Don’t feel extra good tonight. - Sent a bundle of Beacons to Mrs. Shaw (in Galveston) at noon.

 

Wednesday, April 2 – Palacios

Mostly cloudy today but no rain. - Have been sewing very steady all day on Miss Winnie’s skirts and dresses. - Mrs. Farwell came up a few minutes this forenoon. She brought some samples and I ordered goods for a skirt (brown). - Miss Mitchell had just phoned her that Mrs. Wilbur had died some time ago. - Poor little woman, so alone, yet having a son. - Went up to the Tabernacle to prayer meeting tonight. - So sultry, fear another norther. - Real tired.

 

Thursday, April 3 – Palacios

Real pretty day but much cloudy. No rain but such a fog most of the forenoon. - Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Phillips Jr. came this forenoon. I had a good many of the dresses and skirts ready for them. - I have finished all of Mrs. Phillips’ sewing tonight and expect them sometime tonight for it as they go to Houston in the morning. I went to the P O about six o’clock. Recd a letter from Mrs. Haywood. She was on her way to her Father who has had a slight stroke of paralysis. - Then I ate my supper and took a small piece of hemstitching to Mrs. DeAubin to do for Mrs. Pierce. - A brisk norther has come up since dark.

 

Friday, April 4 – Palacios

Such a wonderful day. I did not take a needle in my hand today, but did a large washing this forenoon and since noon went to the PO and received letters from Mrs. Barton and Florence. - Then I did the ironing. Have had such a splendid day. My work went off so well but was dreadful tired. Had not washed for such a long time. But things that I had been putting back are all so clean and fresh now. - Went over to the Richards home tonight. - Going to bed quite tired.

 

Saturday, April 5 – Palacios

Another grand day. Did not sleep much until almost morning then over slept. So many cars passing until after midnight. Box supper at the High School. - This forenoon I cleaned house a little. Miss Mitchell came about ten o’clock with some goods I had ordered. She said Mrs. Farwell had fallen, so I went right down to see her. She did not seem seriously hurt then, but I went down since six o’clock and she seems very sore. - Mrs. Barton and the Gen. drove into town this evening. She came to see me since dark. - They are staying at the Kimball home. Mr. Houghton did some spading for flower garden this afternoon. - So tired tonight. - Sewing on Mrs. Dunn’s dresses this P.M.

Sunday, April 6 – Blessing

Beautiful day all day. Slept late but went to church. Then down to the Kimball home for dinner with them and the Bartons. Such a lovely dinner. Then us women folks went over to see Mrs. Farwell. Mrs. Pierce was there. - Mr. Pierce was in Sargent. Expected to be late getting home so I came up home with Mrs. P. for protection. - Mrs. Barton was coming up to see me late this evening, but I stopped and explained to her. - They are returning to Houston tomorrow. - Mr. and Mrs. Beard and Mrs. Selkirk came up to sit in the Pierce home this evening. Mr. P. came soon after dark. So I did not have to protect Mrs. P. very long. - Never more tired in my life.

 

Monday, April 7 – Palacios

Lovely day. I mended and worked on Mrs. Pierce’s dress until Mr. Farwell came this P.M. - Mrs. Pierce is busy as can be getting things in order for the Oyster Supper to be given in the Community House by Mr. Pierce to the Highway construction gang. They are now working on the Spur into Blessing. The work all being finished from Camp Palacios to the Under pass. - I did not close an eye to sleep until 3 o’clock this morning. Just too tired and nervous. - Mr. Farwell brought me home. Mrs. F. is too lame from her fall to stand jolting over the roads. Am real glad to be near my own bed and am heading for it now. Tired too.

 

Tuesday, April 8 – Palacios

Such a grand day. I finished cutting and basting Mrs. Dunn’s white dresses today. Then I washed my blue dress. It came out beautifully, but shrank some. Shall let the hem down some. - Was so tired and sleepy after lunch I dropped down for a minute and went to sleep. Mr. Farwell came for the spoons for Mrs. Pierce or Mr. Pierce oyster supper. I did not sleep long. - Mrs. Bell and daughter came for consultation about the graduating gown. - Miss Mitchell brought the green goods for my dress “Rayon pique.” - Went down to see Mrs. Farwell since supper. Much better except side. Cornell brought the washing. - Mrs. Taylor, Miss Maude and the darling baby girl came to see me this forenoon.

 

Wednesday, April 9 – Palacios

Another grand day. I spent it at Mrs. Farwell’s. I sewed for her and she sewed for me. - We ate dinner at Mrs. Milam’s. - Went to Prayer Meeting tonight. Saw Mrs. Brown home and she gave me a box of strawberries and a big bouquet. - Mrs. Farwell gave me an armful of roses too. So my house is full of fragrance tonight. - Am very tired.

 

Thursday, April 10

Perfectly grand day. Mrs. Dunn failed to come so I mowed the front lawn and experienced the Nester joke played on me by some injured fellow being. - Went down to tell Mrs. Farwell about it just at noon. - The PM I darned and mended for myself and enjoyed Mrs. Brown’s strawberries. - Went up to see Mrs. Hockey since supper. - Some tired from following the mower and hoe. Thankful for my good bed.

 

Friday, April 11

Beautiful day. Strong south wind. - Mrs. Dunn did not appear today, but I have been busy. - Mowed and put the back yard in order this forenoon. Did a few pieces of washing. - Bought some domestic this P.M. and made a cover for my single bed mattress. Tore a couple of my 10 sheets in two and made four single sheets. - Recd a letter from Mrs. Stoddard. She now suggests that I come to Buckeye the 15 of May and stay indefinitely. - Spent the evening at Mr. and Mrs. Love’s home. - Going to bed tired.

 

Saturday, April 12

Another real Palacios day. Real windy but so sun shiny. - Mrs. Dunn came this forenoon and did some fitting. - I sewed real diligently all day. Mr. and Mrs. Farwell came this evening going driving. Sorry I could not join them. - Took my washing to Mrs. Bonner.  - Went to town to get food. So tired. I rested a long time then polished Father’s old chair. - Am so blue. Guess it is because I am tired. - Thankful for my good bed. - No mail today.

 

Sunday, April 13

Beautiful day. Went to church this forenoon. A good sermon. - Rested all afternoon. About 2 o’clock I went down to see Mrs. Kimball. Walked over my lot down on south bay. The first time I ever stepped my foot on it. - Wish I had a little house on it. - Hope to have it put in order soon. - Mrs. Pierce called this evening, bringing my last purple dress. - Mrs. Farwell is suffering with her side quite severely. - Went to church tonight.

Monday, April 14 – Palacios

Beautiful day. Work going on paving the square. Putting in the curbing now. - Mrs. Dunn came early. She took Mrs. Crawford J. up to Blessing for the noon train then sewed and slept all afternoon. I went down to see Mrs. Farwell late this evening. She is very sore in her side. - Am hoping to have my lot put in order the last of the week. - No mail today. - The Fosters seem to have gone away. House all quiet. - Cow gone, dog gone. - Mr. Houghton feeding chickens.

Rather unpleasant all day. Cloudy, windy and a few drops of rain this evening. - Mrs. Dunn came this morning. We sewed until noon, then went to Mrs. Milam’s for lunch. - Dr. Wagner came in and said word had just come that Mr. Foster had died in San Antonio at this …. They had gone away to enjoy his vacation and he went to have a minor operation performed on his nose before they went farther. -  He died on the table, never coming from under the anesthetic. My heart bleeds for Mrs. Foster. Sent her a message at noon and a short note tonight. Went down to see Mrs. Farwell. She is very sore yet. - So much sadness. Mrs. Boyd (Annie) died at 2:30 this P.M. Apoplexy.

Wednesday, April 16 – Palacios

A cloudy, rainy day. Mrs. Dunn came. We cut out the pajamas. Had to do some of the sewing by electric light. So cloudy and a hard rain this P.M. tho when she went home at 4 o’clock the sun was shining. - Mr. Foster was buried at San Antonio this afternoon. I suppose. - Mrs. Reaser and Mrs. Aubin drove over yesterday to Victoria yesterday P.M. Going on to San A- this morning. So much sorrow. Rev. and Mrs. Williams called on me this P.M. - Went to see Mrs. Farwell after work this P.M.

Thursday, April 17 – My wedding day – 1888 – 42 years

Cloudy and a little rain this morning, but the sun came out later in the day. - Mrs. Dunn did not come today. I worked continuously on the beautiful pajama suit and am satisfied with it. - Went to P. O. late and recd a letter from Mrs. Shaw and an Easter card from Miss Lee Berry. - Mrs. Bell and her daughter came up since supper to show me the graduating gown. It is pretty. - Real tired to night. - Bro. Williams’ first funeral sermon this P.M. (little boy)

Friday, April 18

A good day. Some clouds and some sunshine. - Mrs. Dunn came this forenoon, but I had nothing ready much for her to do. So after lunch, she went home. Am getting along well with the pajama suit. A beautiful combination. - Went down to see how the cleaning of my lot is getting along. Almost wish I had some kind of a house on it. I think it is a pretty place. - Stopped to see Mrs. Farwell. Her side is much better. - Came home very tired. Read the Chronicle and am going to bed. - The School banquet is being held tonight. - Easter cards today.

 

Saturday, April 19

A busy day and a beautiful one. - I cleaned my rooms this forenoon and mailed a few Easter cards. - Sewed very hard all afternoon until 5 o’clock. - The man finished cleaning off my lot this forenoon as I sent to see it before 6 o’clock. - Recd cards from the Shaws and Mrs. Stoddard. - Came home and made sandwitches for the children’s picnic at the Tabernacle. - Had a very pleasant time tho we old ones were very tired. - Mrs. Foster is staying in San Antonio for a time. Don’t know when she will come home. - Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Aubin came back yesterday.

 

Sunday, April 20 – Easter

A beautiful Easter Sunday. - I woke early enough to get up, take a bath, cook and eat my breakfast, wash my dishes, put my rooms in order, dress for Sunday School and get there on time. - Listened to a good sermon by my Pastor. Prepared and ate a good dinner. Washed my dishes. - Rested until three o’clock when Miss Ethel came and took me for a long car ride, which I most thoroughly enjoyed. We went out Turtle Bay road. Found a note from Rosa when I came home. - When I came from church, I found a bouquet of roses from the Farwell garden. Very beautiful. - The Central Baptists worshipped with the Christians tonight. A new minister (every third Sunday).

 

Monday, April 21

Weather as fine as one could ask for. - Just sewing all day. - Mrs. Dunn came down. - Mowed a little in my back yard after supper. Went to P. O. - Easter card from Marguerite. - Read the Houston paper and am going to bed tired. - We finished the velvet pajama suit today.

 

Tuesday, April 22

Pretty day. One hard day of sewing. - Mrs. Foster came home this P.M. Mrs. Edna Rae Noble came with her. - Nothing to write particularly. Am so sorry for all who mourn. - Went to P. O. and came home by Mrs. Farwell’s. She has been sewing some. - My brown crepe has come. Will have a little time for myself before I go to Buckeye.  - Surely am needing some stitches for myself.

 

Wednesday, April 23

Yet another grand day. The clouds, which threatened rain last night, had vanished this morning. - A good day of sewing. Mrs. Dunn came down. - I went to the Tabernacle tonight. Good meeting. - We ate dinner at Mrs. Milam’s. - Tired tonight and real nervous.

 

Thursday, April 24 – Palacios

Pretty day. Summer is on the way. - Mrs. Dunn came down. We sewed real hard. - Ate dinner at Mrs. Milam’s. Went to P.O. at noon. Letters from Mrs. Pierce and Bro. Haywood. Mrs. H. is in Boulder yet. - Took Mrs. Pierce’s letter down for Mrs. Farwell to read. - She is sewing some. Her side is better but real painful yet.

 

Friday, April 25

Pretty all day. - Mrs. Dunn came down but forgot some of our material so she took me up to Blessing with her. Such a grand treat for I did not rest well last night and felt quite no account until I was out in the air awhile. - The sewing went on well. Hope to finish her work tomorrow for the present. - Ate dinner at Mrs. Milam’s. - Beacon to read. - Wind threatens rain to night. - I watered the seeds I have planted. - Tired.

 

Saturday, April 26 - Palacios

Beautiful day. - We did not quite finish the sewing today. I am to go on with it Monday.  Dinner at Mrs. Milam’s. - After I cleaned my sewing room, I went to town for my groceries, PO, etc. - Then over to see Mrs. Farwell. She went out for a little drive this P.M. Side still sore. - Farmers are needing rain.

 

Sunday, April 27

Some lovely weather. - I slept late this morning and did not go to Sunday school. Am ashamed of it. But went to church. Heard a good sermon. - Had an excellent dinner prepared and asked Mrs. Brown to come and dine with me, but she has to sleep as soon as she eats, so preferred to go home. - My new irish potatoes are so good, butter, pepper and salt, browned and I made an apple pie and had my favorite salad—lettuce, pineapple and cheese. - Rested all afternoon. Went to BYPU and church tonight. Good sermon again.

 

Monday, April 28 - Palacios

Rain threatened all day and came about 3:30 P.M. - I sewed on Baby Jane’s waist and panties and Mrs. Dunn’s red dress today.  - Mrs. Farwell came up this P.M. brought me a beautiful branch of Easter Lilies. - Took one to Mrs. Foster also, but Mrs. Reaser had taken her to town. Mr. Farwell and Mr. Linceum? drove out to the underpass. It began raining almost as soon as they left and a hard rain is falling now. Much lightening too. - Mrs. Dunn came in the rain and fitted her red dress. - I did not go to the P.O. this evening. The lights went out about 8 o’clock. Glad I had candles. Mrs. Foster seems to be alone in her house.

 

Tuesday, April 29

Very severe rain and wind last night about midnight, but this has been a wonderful day. The rain came down with such force that it beat the ground down and much of the fruit was blown from the trees. - I finished Mrs. Dunn’s dress this forenoon. This P.M. went down and finished Mrs. Farwell’s coat for her. She gave me a vine and I went over to Mrs. Love’s for some fertilizer and she gave me some more vines and some ____ and some lettuce, carrots, etc. As I came home one of the Bell girls brought me some elegant dewberries. Mrs. Love came and sat with me awhile tonight, so I did not sew any.

 

Wednesday, April 30 – Palacios

Good wash day. I did a large washing this forenoon and ironed it this afternoon. - Recd a letter from Mrs. Shaw enclosing one for Mrs. Foster which I mailed to her here. - Went up to the Tabernacle tonight. Very tired.

 

Memoranda

Mr. Foster died in San Antonio the 12th of this month – 1930. Born in Perry, Ia Jan. 25, 1882. - My wedding anniversary was the 17th of this month 42 years ago. - This is Mrs. Dunn’s sewing month. - I have certainly enjoyed being at home all of this time since March 25th.

Thursday, May 1 – Palacios

May Day and a rainy misty one. - Sewed at the Farwell home until about 4 o’clock then Mr. F. drove us up to Blessing to enjoy the new cement highway. The spur into Blessing is not yet open. We went to see Mrs. Pierce a short time. She was almost ready to go to the train. Going to Austin to an art exhibit. - Came home and I found a letter from Mrs. Barton. She was in Austin when she wrote. - I accepted an invitation to eat waffles with Rev. and Mrs. Williams tonight. Most excellent waffles, syrup and chocolate pudding, coffee. Enjoyed my evening greatly and trust they may continue in their chosen work.

 

Friday, May 2

Rather cloudy most of the day. - I sewed for Mrs. Farwell until 11:30 then came home. She had to help in the Book Social at the Library from 2 to 5 PM. - I did not have a book to contribute so gave $1.00 and drank a little punch. - Came home and asked Mrs. Foster for the papers they were keeping in their safety box for me. She was pulling up weeds in her back yard. Did not look up but said, “all right.” - Went to the school play “Am I Intruding?” with the Newsoms. Complimentary. - Tired but am feeling better in my mind. - The play was most excellent.

Saturday, May 3

A cloudy day, but only a little mist of rain. I have been sewing for myself today. Letting hems down and mending. - Went to see Mayor Ruthven about moving a barrel that stands on the vacant lot. - Went to see Mr. Gray about some one to take Mr. Foster’s place as Executor of my belongings if I have any. He was not in his office. Returned a pan to Mrs. Love and a dish to Mrs. Bell which Esther brought me dewberries in. - The Newsoms are over at the school building working tonight. - No one came today and no mail. - Sent a note to Mrs. Barton today.

 

Sunday, May 4

A warm windy day. - Went to S. S. and Church. Took Rev. and Mrs. Williams to the “Do Drop Inn” for dinner. Mrs. Pierce, Smith and Heffelfinger were there. - After coming home, I went back to take a message to Mrs. Farwell from Mrs. Pierce. - Then up to the Tabernacle to a called meeting for members. - Mrs. Bell came to see me just before church time at night. Went to Tabernacle again at night. - So tired. No mail today.

Cut out two dresses for myself today. Mrs. Farwell was not well. - Went to see Mr. Gray. Had a new writing made by him. - Am tired tonight. Went to town twice. - Paid Mr. Gray $5.00.

 

Tuesday, May 6

Such a dreadful windy day. A storm in the Gulf. I sewed for Mrs. Farwell until 4:30 then came as the clouds were so threatening. - Met Mrs. Crawford at my porch returning for Mrs. Foster all of my papers except the deed to my home and abstract of same. - Went to ask her about them and she said she could not divide the papers until she had a Lawyer look them over and did not know when she could do that. - There was a dreadful wind and electrical storm from dark until about 8:30 tonight, but no serious damage done. - Tired tonight.

 

Wednesday, May 7

Grand day. Warm. Water in bay smooth as glass this morning. - Sewed for Mrs. Farwell until 2:30. She went to Wed Club and I came home. - Letter from Marguerite. 2 pages. Also letter and check from Mrs. Dunn. - Sewing for myself this PM. - Went to Tabernacle tonight. - Mrs. Gripp came to be with Mrs. Foster today. - Took tax redemption paper to Mr. Gray today to have him get receipts for me in Bay City (on lot on bay).

 

Thursday, May 8

Cloudy, damp morning. Sent a letter to Mrs. Stoddard today. - Sewed at Mrs. Farwell’s all day. - Very tired tonight. - Am sewing for myself nights. - The work of paving the square seems to be going very slowly, but we have waited many years for it. - No mail today.

 

Friday, May 9

Cloudy windy day. - Sewed for Mrs. Farwell all day. - Found 3 letters from Mrs. Stoddard and one from Mrs. Bell in my box. - Went up to Mrs. Chesshire’s tonight. - Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Gripp went to Houston this P.M. - Very high wind blowing tonight tho no storm signals are up. - Very tired. So much wind I think gets on one’s nerves.

 

Saturday, May 10 – Mrs. Williams

Very windy and cloudy. At home. - Tried to do some house cleaning but was interrupted many times. - Mrs. Williams brought me some vegetables. This is her birthday. She is having a dinner tonight and asked me over. - Took my letters from Mrs. Stoddard to Mrs. Farwell as they carried a message for her. - This afternoon I worked very fast and finally put the house in some order. Mrs. Williams brought me a piece of pie and a piece of her cake. - Mrs. Newsom also gave me a pie. - Went to P.O. Came home feeling almost sick. Stomach upset perhaps and so tired. - Found two cape jessamines for mother.

 

Sunday, May 11 – Mother’s Day

Rainy Mother’s Day. - I lay down to rest a while about six o’clock last evening. - Fell asleep and did not awake until some time in the night. The lights were off so I did not undress, but slept again until daylight all dressed. Then I found I was dizzy and so sick. Took a big dose of soda and undressed. Slept again until nine o’clock AM. Got up and made a cup of coffee, drank a little and ate an orange. Then I rested until noon and felt better. Sorry not to go to church on Mother’s day (in the morning). - Went to PO about 3 o’clock. Mrs. Pierce, Farwell and Beard had just driven up. I went with them to the Farwell home. Had Mother’s Day card from Bee and Wiley and letter from Mrs. Massenburg. - Went over to Christian church tonight. Revival beginning. All churches dismissed for it. - Pastor detained. Rev. Ray preached. Rev. Williams choirmaster. Rev. Gillespie prayed. - Wrote many cards and letters today.

 

Monday, May 12 – My Father’s birthday 1843. He would be 87 today. 1899 – Blessing

Cloudy forenoon. Mrs. Farwell came up and said they would drive to Blessing this P.M. So I came up with them. Mrs. Pierce is putting her summer slip covers on so I worked on them. - Mr. Pierce is in Sargent. - We drove out to the underpass after supper. The cement highway is a joy. - Then Mrs. Pierce wrote and I curled up on the couch and slept and listened to a radio concert until 12 o’clock.

 

Tuesday, May 13 – Blessing

We cut out a white silk dress this forenoon. Sewed on it all day. - Mr. Farwell phoned that Mrs. F. was sick, so after supper we drove down to see her. - Found her on the couch real sick. Stomach trouble. Gas. The distance between Blessing and Palacios seems much shorter since the cement highway is open. - Found Mr. Pierce at home when we returned. - Radio Concert. - Mr. Pierce will be my executor

 

Wednesday, May 14 – Blessing

Pretty day tho warm. - Mrs. Pierce was in Bay City all day. - Mr. Hurd ate lunch with Mr. Pierce. - Sewed on dresses and darned. - Went to hear Rev. Engle preach tonight. - Tired.

 

Thursday, May 15 – Blessing

Pretty day. - Miss Dora Moore came out to visit Mr. and Mrs. Pierce. She is a spritely little woman 82 years old. Was a teacher in the Pierce home during Mr. Abel Pierce’s boyhood. - We three women drove down to Palacios tonight to see Mrs. Farwell. She is real sick yet. Mrs. Helander is with them.

Friday, May 16 – Blessing

Very warm day, tho windy. - Sewed hard all day on dresses. - Miss Moore went back to Bay City this afternoon. - Mrs. Pierce busy as a bee. - We all went to the school play or entertainment at the Community House tonight. - Mrs. Pierce made chicken broth today for Mrs. Farwell today.

 

Saturday, May 17 – Palacios

Rain threatened this forenoon. - Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Beard started to Houston at six o’clock this morning. - Mr. Farwell came up for the chicken broth this forenoon. - I finished the dresses this forenoon and came home, on the noon train. Mr. Claybourn brought me up from the depot. - Found some more of my papers at the Bank, also, a request for the note from the Fosters. - The abstract still missing. - Left the note for collection and put the papers in the safety box. Miss Claire? Waited on me. Left the key with her. - Mrs. Farwell is some better, but very weak yet. Paid Mr. Houghton for mowing the lawn. Am getting ready to go to Buckeye tomorrow. - So tired tonight. - Mr. Gus Moore had a stroke of paralysis last night.

Sunday, May 18 – Bay City

A busy day. Did not go to S. S. today. No preaching in town except commencement sermon. - Mr. Claybourn drove me to the 10 o’clock train and I came to Bay City. - Mrs. Stoddard met me and we went to her apartment. - Later ate six o’clock dinner at the Rice.

 

Monday, May 19 – Buckeye

Rained quite hard this forenoon. - Mrs. Stoddard has a car to use during her stay in Buckeye and intended to drive out today, but the rain caused slippery roads so we came on the train. - Paula and Leonitis had the house in order and we were soon settled for living in Buckeye.

 

Tuesday, May 20 – Buckeye

A pretty day. Have been doing some repair work on dresses today. - Very quiet here. Only the frogs and birds. Mosquitoes not troublesome. - Phone message from Mrs. Pierce saying “Come when you can.” - Mrs. Stoddard may go to Houston, some day this week.

 

Wednesday, May 21 – Blessing

Mrs. Stoddard had to go to Houston on the 4 o’clock train so she sent me over to Blessing by trick. Took a lesson in driving from Mr. Dunbar. - Went to commencement exercises in the Community House tonight. - Rev. and Mrs. Williams were up from Palacios, he having a place on the program.

 

Thursday, May 22 – Blessing

Pretty day but very windy. - Cut out and put in the tan coat lining. Also cut the blue lining. - Mr. Pierce went to Sargent early this morning. - Mrs. Pierce wrote letters all day. - School board meeting tonight.

 

Friday, May 23 – Blessing

Beautiful morning but a hard rainstorm came up from the north before noon. - Mrs. Pierce intended going over to the colored school to see their exhibit, also to Palacios this PM but the muddy roads prevented. - Finished blue coat lining and did some on linen blouse. - Mr. Pierce in Sargent. - Real cool tonight but not raining. - No word from Mrs. Stoddard so she did not return to Buckeye today.

 

Saturday, May 24 – Blessing

Pretty day. Strong north wind and some sunshine to dry the mud. - Letter from Mrs. S. saying she will be home Monday. - Sewing all day. - Mr. Pierce came home this forenoon. After dinner we drove to Palacios. - The Newsoms expect to keep my rooms next year. - Mrs. Foster has returned the furniture, etc. which she had. - Found Mrs. Farwell better. - Letter from Bro. Haywood in P.O. - The cement roads are a joy.

 

Sunday, May 25 – Blessing

Beautiful day. - Mr. Farwell drove up this forenoon. - After lunch Mr. Pierce drove Mrs. Pierce and me away down below Collegeport. New country to me. Black hog wallow, rough roads after leaving the cement. - Read some tonight. - Going to bed tired. - Sent a note to Mrs. Stoddard which she will receive when she comes to Buckeye tomorrow.

 

Monday, May 26 – Buckeye

Grand day. - Sewed until four o’clock then Mrs. Pierce brought me over to Buckeye. - Mrs. Stoddard came out on the noon train. - We are all set for housekeeping again. - And tired, too.

Lovely day. - Sewing all day. - Nothing in particular to record except that this is a most beautiful place. Such pretty trees, hedges, vines and shrubs.

Cloudy all day and a slow rain this P.M. - We were going to Bay City, stay to see the Pictures and then bring Mrs. Stoddard’s car out, but the rain spoiled the plans. - Not raining at bedtime. - Wrote to Bro. Haywood, also Feather and Son, asking that a vacancy permit be granted me.

Pretty day. - Just sewing and eating all day. - Wrote to Mrs. Farwell tonight. - Frogs giving a grand concert tonight.

 

Friday, May 30 – Buckeye

Decoration Day - Beautiful day until late P.M. - Mr. Ford went to Bay City and brought Mrs. Stoddard’s car out this afternoon. - A very hard rain fell this P.M. - A snake appeared in the living room just before dark. - Where it came from is a mystery. We drove it out onto the porch and killed it with the broom and brush. - Two small frogs hopped onto the table while we were playing “Words” tonight. - Sewing all day. - 11:30 going to bed.

 

Saturday, May 31

Beautiful day. Good strong wind today the fields and roads. - Sewed until about 8:30 then went to P.O. and office with Mrs. Stoddard. - Recd letter from Feather and Co. granting Ins. Permit. - After supper, Mr. Dunbar drove us to Bay City. I took a lesson going over. - We bought groceries. Then Mrs. Stoddard took us to the Picture Show “Gay Madrid.” - Arrived home after midnight.

Sunday, June 1 – Buckeye

Wonderful day. - Wrote to the Houghtons, Miss Hansen, Bro. Williams and M. K. Feather (Ins.) - After dinner took a driving lesson. Then we mailed our letters and walked out to Mrs. Muirs. - When we came back, I did a little practice driving in the back yard. - Going to bed at 9:30. Real tired.

 

Monday, June 2 – Buckeye

Some cloudy today. - Did not sew at all today. - Went to Bay City with Mr. Dunbar this forenoon to get some practice in driving. - Mrs. Stoddard and me helped Leonitis wash the car this afternoon. We sent gardenias to Miss Mary this P.M. - To bed early.

 

Tuesday June 3 – Jeff Davis birthday – Buckeye

We went to Palacios today. Mrs. Stoddard and me went in her car. Mr. Ford and Mr. Dunbar went in the truck. They brought the couch, big chair and Checkerboard table home. - We left Buckeye at 8:12 and were back again at 12:30. Were in Palacios only about 45 minutes. Went down by Ashby and came back by Blessing. - Sewed this afternoon. Real tired after my 54 mile drive. - The peaches on my trees are not ripe yet. Saw Mrs. Houghton just a minute.

Beautiful day. - Sewed all forenoon. - Company from Bay City this P.M. - Wrote Judge Gray tonight. - Am still tired from my long drive yesterday.

Busy day and a pretty one. - We drove down to Mr. Brown’s this forenoon to get some chickens and tomatoes. - Sewed this afternoon. Drove Mrs. Stoddard down to the office. Stitched the band on Mrs. Pierce’s blouse neck. - Went driving almost to Markham after supper. - Going to bed at 10:30. Have a headache.

 

Friday, June 6

Pretty day tho rain threatened this morning early. - Mrs. Stoddard and me drove to Bay City this forenoon. - This afternoon we were getting ready for Guests tomorrow. - Long letter from Mrs. Fraser. Sent check to Water Co. in Palacios today. Mr. Newsom evidently did not pay the water rent for May. - Did not sew today. Mailed Mrs. Pierce’s blouse from Bay City.

 

Saturday, June 7 – Buckeye

Busy, beautiful day. - The guests came (6), Rev. Storey, his daughter, Mrs. McClure/McClune, her two daughters, a friend of theirs (Miss Lewis). Also Mr. Brown, a student who is to supply for Dr. Storey during his absence on a summer vacation. - Mrs. Stoddard’s 12 o’clock dinner was excellent. Paula a jewel. - After dinner we went to the woods. - The key to Mrs. Stoddard’s car was lost for a time, so we went in the guests’ car. - Found our key in time to go to the Picture show. Mr. Dunbar drove us home.

 

Sunday, June 8

Fine day. We went to Bay City to hear Dr. Storey preach this forenoon. He goes to California Tuesday on his vacation. - Paula had dinner ready when we came home. - Washed my hair this P.M. Went to the School house to hear a young preacher student from Markham tonight. - Did not write a letter today.

 

Monday, June 9

Beautiful day. - Sewed only. - Made two slips and worked on an unfinished dress.

Wonderful day. - Sewing all day. - Note from Mr. Gray. - Mrs. S. took oil this morning.  - Better tonight.

Pretty day, but cloudy and an occasional shower. - Went to Bay City to a Missionary Circle meeting this P.M. Rained some while we were there. - Sewed all forenoon.

Still pretty weather. So good for cotton. - Sewing all day. - Letter from Mrs. Farwell. - Went to protracted meeting at School house beginning tonight

 

Saturday, June 14

Lovely day. - Mrs. Stoddard went to Bay City by train this forenoon. - Then to Wharton with Mrs. Corbett to see Mrs. Borden who was injured in an auto accident. - I drove into Bay City about 5 P.M. - (Picked up a line man and took him into Bay City.) - Met Mrs. Stoddard at the Rice. From there took dinner at Mrs. Capp’s. Drove to Van Vleck after supper then to Picture Show. - Mr. Dunbar drove us home. 12:30

 

Sunday, June 15

Pretty day. Drove out to Mrs. Muir’s this forenoon. Then went to the school house to preaching. - Then back after Mrs. Muir, to eat lamb stew with us. - After dinner took Mrs. Muir home and Mr. Dunbar gave Mrs. Stoddard a lesson in driving. - Went to church again tonight. - Tired. Tired. Tired.

 

Monday, June 16 – Buckeye

Pretty forenoon, but hot in the Sun. - Sewed until 4:30 then Mrs. S. and me started to Bay City for ice, but rain overtook us at Markham. So we got the ice there and the roads were so slippery that we got a boy, Young Harper, to drive the car home.  - Mr. Ford shipped calves today.

 

Tuesday, June 17

Threatened rain this P.M. - Leonitis washed the car this forenoon. - Sewed and fitted all day. - Went to church tonight. - Letter from the Skinners wanting my rooms during BYPU Encampment. - Can not accommodate them. Sorry.

 

Wednesday, June 18 - Buckeye

Mrs. Stoddard paid me $41.82 today. $40.00 check. 1.82 cash. - Pretty day tho warm. North wind. - Went to Bay City tonight to see “Paramount on Parade.” - Mr. Dunbar drove us from Markham over and all the way home.

 

 

Thursday, June 19 – Mr. Webb’s birthday 1857-1918. He would have been 73 today.

Lovely day tho warm. - Drove out to Mrs. Muir’s after 5 o’clock. Bought 10 dozen eggs in to the store for her. - Had early supper then went to Markham for a drive. - Then to church at school house in Buckeye. - Letter from Aunt Mira.

 

Friday, June 20

Another lovely day. - Mr. Dunbar mowed the yellow weeds which are starting Mrs. Stoddard’s hay fever. - Sewed all day. - Mr. Ford went home tonight on a weeks vacation. - Mrs. S. and me went to church tonight. - Were going to Palacios tomorrow, but Mr. Ford’s absence from the Ranch changes our plans. - Mrs. Stoddard and me are alone in the house tonight. - We drove over to the school house to preaching tonight.

 

Saturday, June 21 – Buckeye

Some rain this forenoon. Have finished the striped dress. - Been cutting out this P.M. Had to send for more black and white silk, also more for white blouse. - Mr. Dunbar drove up to Bay City for us tonight. Took some tomatoes and carrots to Mrs. Capps. - Did some marketing. Then went to picture show. - Ate supper at Rice. - Had a cool drink at Dooleys? before we came home. - Roads some muddy. Went down on new grade from Markham to river bridge. - Mr. D. is sleeping here during Mr. Ford’s absence. -  A pleasant ending to a strenuous afternoon. Thanks to Mrs. Stoddard.

 

Sunday, June 22 – Buckeye

Hot. We went to church at the school house this forenoon. - Rested all afternoon. Then went to church tonight. The young preacher, Mr. Butchert closed his service of sermons.

 

Monday, June 23

Pretty warm again this day. - Sewed until 2 o’clock then we drove out to Mrs. Muir’s. - Read after supper. Going to bed at 10:45.

 

Tuesday, June 24

Pretty day. Hot sure. Drove out to Mr. Powell’s this forenoon to engage wild grapes. - After supper we drove out as far as the canal bridge. Mrs. Stoddard was taking a lesson. In turning around for her I allowed the car to run back into the bar pit where it stuck. - We walked home about two miles (after dark) and Mr. Dunbar went out for the car. Such is life.

 

Wednesday, June 25

Mr. Powell brought grapes today. - Mr. and Mrs. Farwell drove up this afternoon for a few minutes. Mrs. F. is not very strong. - Mr. Dunbar drove us into Bay City tonight to see Novarro at the Picture show. - Real hot weather.

Thursday, June 26 – Buckeye

Hot day. Mrs. Stoddard has had the breakfast porch cleaned and her hammock swung in it. - We are eating our meals out there, too. So cool. - Took a walk after supper.

 

Friday, June 27 – Buckeye

Hot forenoon. We drove to Bay City. Did some marketing and attended to business. - Sewed after lunch. Going to Palacios tomorrow. - Mr. Ford will come home tonight. - Mrs. Stoddard paid me $16.00 today.

 

Saturday, June 28 – Palacios

Drove to Palacios this forenoon. - Mr. Dunbar went with us to go back with Mrs. Stoddard. - I did many things today. Saw Mr. Bentler about ordering ceiling paper for the bedroom. - Mr. Price is to order doors. - Mr. Houghton has kept the place fairly well. He gathered all of the peaches that were ripe. Mrs. S. took them home with her. Weather is so hot they will not keep. - Went to see Mrs. Farwell and Mrs. Richards. Bro. Williams has gone. The paved square is a joy. - Sleeping at home tonight. - Saw Mr. Pierce at Mr. Farwell's. Buddy to be operated on next Tuesday.

 

 

Sunday, June 29 – Buckeye

Another hot day. Slept late this morning. Did not go to S. S. - Mrs. Stoddard and Mr. Dunbar came for me about 3:00 this P.M. - Miss Lillian Pevoteaux spent the night with Mrs. S. last night. - Letter form Mrs. Coghill of Houston wanting rooms for the T. N. G. Encampment.

 

Monday, June 30

Real hot day. - We drove out to Mrs. Muir’s this forenoon to take some fruit jar covers. She has been quite sick. - Have been sewing all day. Mrs. Stoddard is feeling the effects of her two trips to Palacios. She did most of the driving. - We sat in the screened porch until bedtime just resting. Did not light the lamps. - I am tired, too, from my hard trip to Palacios. It was so hot walking around in the sun. - Last day of June.
