Seward County, Nebraska Marriages

According to W.W. Cox in the first edition of his Seward County history, the first marriage in the county, as shown in the records, was that of John W. Pitt and Elva Long at the residence of Samuel Long, on the 12th day of November, 1866. The ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace J.P. Neihardt. Other early marriages included David P. Imlay an Mary Moffitt on 20 March 1867 and James A. Brown and Sarah A. Imlay on 20 Apr. 1867. Prior to the formal organization of the county in 1867, records were kept in Lincoln, Lancaster County.

Although marriages took place in Seward County from the early days, recording them in the County Clerk's office began in December, 1869. Two licenses that were issued in what is now A Precinct in 1869 were included at the end of Book 1 and can be found in part 3. There was no standardized form. Recorded information included: Name of groom, residence, age, where born, color, father's name, mother's maiden name; Name of bride, residence, age, where born, color, father's name, mothers maiden name; Date license issued, date of marriage, where married, and by whom. The first volume covers years 1869-1878. This page is an index of the first 100 pages of volume one and covers the beginning to the end of 1872 and beginning of 1873. This index includes the date the license was issued; name of groom; name of bride; and the date of the marriage. On rare occasions the license was not returned and in those instances that column is left blank.
