The Eddie Popps of Hillje visited her parents, the A. Kubenkas of Cordele.

There has been quite a bit of leasing activity in this section recently and there should be a lot of drilling in the spring. That's one of the blessings of Free Enterprize: one can do what he thinks he can afford without someone, looking over his shoulder to see if it’s ok with some dictator.

The annual business meeting of the Cordele Community Center and election of officers was held Tuesday night. Hamp Hardy, Ivan Fenner and Mrs. Carlee Larkin, retiring officers are to be commended on the condition of affairs and their continued cooperation is looked for. Harry Larson, Alvin Dittrich the Mayor and Mrs. Clive Slavacek are the overseers for the next year. Plans were made for property improvement and will get underway soon.

At this time of the season we should all stop and think how lucky we are that we have never had an attack of crippler polio. Claudius Branch brought out some supplies and little bottles that I hope are well filled. The plans laid Thursday night at Cordele were to have a Mexican supper and other entertainment for the March of Dimes. Every one that can attend are asked to be present and help out with this worthy cause. The date is Thursday night, January 28th.

Remember the next one might be one of yours.

I’ll see you later; gotta get some of that stuff that isn’t insomnia.

Well, sir, according to what I can read in the newspaper this is one of them there political years, yes sir, things will be getting steamed up fore long. Now candidates will be trying for offices because they think that it’s time for a change and office holders will be wanting just one more term, the Editor will collect his fees for the announcement and he'll be the only one to be making money out of it. So the more candidates the merrier and a happy campaign to all.

Seems like some of the people in the country have been getting all steamed up about a man called MacCarthy. Well, sir, it seems to me that you used to hear about a man named Martin Dies that had the same job as Mac certain classes of people weren't so hot about him. Seems like fearless Harry from Missouri held the same job for a while, but not too many were after his scalp so it just might be that this feller MacCarthy might be getting just a little hard on some of the wrong ones toes. I'd like to meet the man, but he don't have cloven hoofs nor horns sprouting on his forehead.

Good Evening Folks.

A number of people from Cordele attended the funeral services that were held for Doc. Whitfield of Edna. He was well and favorably known in this community, having practiced locally ever since he came to this county years ago. Doc was not old as years go, but in serving the people of the county in the days when there were no roads but dirt and mud, mostly mud, he was noted for getting there at any hour, from personal experience the writer knows he made calls on some of patients when he should been at home taking care of himself. He will be missed by a lot of folks who have depended on him for these many years. Our sincere sympathies go with his family.

Messrs. A. W. Ferris, George Heber and Paul Balka of Sealy were looking over places in this locality one day last week. Mr. Ferris lived in this community years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Calcote of Lolita were visiting relatives in this locality Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Hip Hobson and son of Edna were visiting her mother, Mrs. Wm. Budd and family of Cordele recently.

Jo Ed Wearden and family of Victoria spent Sunday at the ranch near Cordele.

Mrs. J. R. Fiew received word from her niece that she and her family were starting on their trip to Germany to join her husband stationed there in Uncle Sam’s Army.

Harrison Stafford of Edna and brother of Wharton were looking after business in Cordele recently.

The ex-Cordele boy with the receding hair line and the beautiful blonde were visiting in the Free State Sunday.

The well that is being drilled on the Wearden Ranch is past the depth of 6,600 feet. It will be continued to a depth, according to talk. This hole should prove up a new part of the county. The Big Six is drilling west of Cordele as is another rig. The blowout at Williams well last week caused quite a stir. Fortunately, the well did not catch fire and no one was injured. The well on the Hart place was shot today and should be cleared up soon. How’s that for news, L. H. J.?

For the past week the air has been filled with quite a bit of dust from the Northwestern part of the State. One day last week the visibility from that dust was less than a mile, way down here several hundred miles from where the dirt storms were originated. Here’s wishing for some general rains all over the U. S. A.

Well, sir, I have always heard that when a young feller starts to cleaning up extra good and starts oiling down his hair that it’s a sure sign that he’s beginning to look at the Fairer Sex. Seems like there are a couple of the young sprouts around this locality sorta in that category.

Sho would like to be up and around Wichita, Kans., next month, but don’t believe the chamber of commerce would underwrite the trip at this time and I won’t have time to pass the hat.

So Long.

Kid Gerald and son dropped by on their way home from the Edna Hatchery, where they had received some of those young chickens that made Boles famous, says he's going to raise pigs and chickens along with his other farming activities.

John J. Miller was in Cordele delivering butane gas to some of their customers and drinking Strane colas while here.

The well on the Wearden Ranch that was drilled by the South Texas Oil & Gas Co. is reportedly a dual completion. The Magnolia well on the Watson place is setting long string and should be brought in soon. The commissioners of the county and the Hiway Dept. should build some bridges over which these contractors could move in and out over their equipment without any bother. There apparently is going to be a lot of activity in these parts in the near future and has been and will continue to be quite a financial boost to the locality in general.

We hear lots of talk about low priced cattle, the dryness of the soil and lots of other disagreeable things. As a whole, the most of us don't look far enough out in all directions to see the really good things about us. Now then we can look at the dust that has come in on the winds from out west and still not realize how much worse it is out there. When the street lights are turned on in the middle of the afternoon so that there is light enough to see a little then we can thank the Lord that our part of the country hasn't started rolling as yet.

Well, Sir, it’s supposed to rain by Wednesday noon, an owl hooted at noon last Sunday. However, there is a possibility that maybe it was a young owl.

Yuh noe: it seems that all Texans, whether by birth or adoption, take great pride in their state and its belongings, how much bigger and better everything in and from Texas is. The way I got these things figgered is, the Congress and all the rest of them fellers up in Washington have been talking a lot about making a state out of Alaska which would then be larger than Texas, so the good Lord looked down and knew that if than happened the Texans wouldn’t be able to brag on the size of the state no more, so he just started parts of Colo., Kans, Okla. and a little of the Texas panhandle rolling out to the Gulf so that it would settle down and give us more acres of land, and we could still hold up our heads and we could still hold up our heads and tell everyone that Texas was still the biggest state in the U. S. A.

You know the cheapest and most appreciated deed that one can do is write and mail a letter, if a fellow. If a fellow is so dad burned hard up that he is unable to buy a stamp and too lazy to get a piece of wrapping paper from any merchant rolled to scratch on then he's pretty sorry, every one's folks enjoy hearing once in a while from their people so that they will know what penitentiary to send the mail to, seems like I must be one of the worst at neglecting letter writing from what I hear in the form of foot notes on some of these cards.

Seems I've heard a passage in the Good Book that says that it shall rain on the just and unjust. Well, sir, I don't know what to think, it rained on the good folks about three or more inches and it even rained a little on the poor farm, for which I am thankful.

A short time ago when in Cuero I received one of those complimentary parking tickets. It is blue in color and in large black letters at the top is the word SORRY-YOU OVER PARKED IN A METERED SPACE. No doubt it was an oversight. If you will present your ticket at the nearest metered store or the city hall within an hour after the violation. They will accept a five cent meter charge. Thank you! The Cuero Police Department.

The above is as it is on my Blue reminder, in this manner the Cuero police department is building up a lot more good will than they do when they stick a four bit or $ fine on you, especially when you are a transient.

I would have enjoyed a long distance call to my sister in Colorado last Sunday night a lot more if some smart Alec would have kept from hollering in the receiver. When one pays for a call he should have the right to talk undisturbed as any one knows they won't talk long when paying by the minute. However, if the rude ones will let the conservation be finished than call back, we will gladly tell them what the talk was about.

We hear a lot about child delinquency and the evils thereof. Well, sir, if there were not SO many delinquent parents and social leaders we would have none of these problems. If every mother and father would put a curfew on their kids and would see to it that there was a little more time spent at home and less time spent running around, if the parents of these fourteen to seventeen year olds. would see to it that certain hours were kept there would be lots less heart-break for all concerned, if you turn a half-broken colt out he sure will be hard to handle, if you ever expect to use him.

Mr. and Mrs. Wagstaff and Carlyn of Edna, Linda, Edward and Loney of Hilje, Virginia and Clyde and sons were guests of the Anton Kubenka's last Sunday.

The Goldmans of Hiway 59 were attending church and visiting her relatives in Cordele last Sunday. The August Padons of Cordele visited her mother and family here also.

There were so many Cordele citizens at the bay last Sunday that it looked like an old fashioned country reunion. Those contacted reported a very happy time.

Quite a number of Cordele citizens attended the fire works exhibition at the Pioneer Park in Edna Monday night. Enjoyed it very much and hope that it’s larger next year.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wearden of Victoria have returned to their home after spending a week's vacation at the ranch. They furnished some mighty good watermelon and it wasn't a political one, either.

Squire Leland Jones and Young Wakefield of El Campo have been having water trouble at their pasture across the creek. Think they will have to get a new one drilled. Muy Pronto.

Mr. Davidson, who has cattle on the Hart place is shipping out west for pasture. Seems strange to have to ship west to get out of the drouth in Jackson Co.

The well that was drilled on the Huber lease is reported to be salt water. The one on the Hunt lease is reportedly setting Long String. The South Texas Co. is supposed to start operations again in the near future. These companies and others have put a quite of bit of money in circulation in this locality and it is hoped they will continue operations for a long time.

Yuh Noe, a feller told me the other day that this was an election year. Well, sir, I couldn't hardly believe it; don't see much activity and seem to hear less. It used to be that there were big speakings like I heard there was at Belton recently. There was about as much entertainment as there was at a Medicine Show. A feller'd get up on a stand and tell about how many acres of corn he'd plowed (but not much about corn he'd drank) and tell the peepul that his friends called him Jawn and kiss the babies and tell what he'd do for the country. Now days it seems to be a disgrace if you make a fair sized land deal and sorts bring in the bacon. I knew one deal that a friend of mine made on a few thousand dollars investment that made him a millionaire; hope he don’t never run for office as I’m quite sure some of the opponents would try and show something queer, about that. There is nothing in the world as venomous as that little thing called jealousy.

Free State of Cordele

Evans Howdy:

Several acres of pasture and hay land, fences, and severe burns to several head of cattle were the casualties of a kerosene torch being applied to a nest of yellow jackets on the W. F. Hart place one day last week. A group of Cordele men, aided by the Edna Volunteer Fire Department, finally put out the blaze that was being aided by the dry grass and high wind. The thanks of the entire community to all that helped in any way.

Paul Loos of Yoakum, brother of Mrs. Chas. Davenport of Cordele was looking after his cattle on pasture here at Cordele.

W. J. Davidson of Wharton shipped cattle from the Hart pasture here to Uvalde or vicinity the other week and from the Goppert place to East Texas this week. Lack of rain has shortened the local grazing situation.

The Hamp Hardy's have returned from a vacation trip to the United States and parts of Texas. Hamp gained about three pounds while on the trip.

Izzy Seligman and his dark complected secretary of Edna were looking after Izzy's business in Cordele recently. While here he made a contribution to the Methodist Church. Can you imagine an Irishman putting that much confidence in a square head.

Major Jean G. Goppert and family of Maryland and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Goppert of El Campo and the Dalton Friedrich's of Arneckeville were among those visiting Mrs. Nagel and family in Cordele recently.

Mrs. J. W. Larkin and family of Cordele have been enjoying a visit from Mrs. Larkin's sisters the past weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Portwood Alley and son of Beeville were visiting her sister and family of Upper Cordele over the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Fenner of this locality were in Houston on a trip recently.

Miss Jean Bennett of Houston visited her brother and family, the Harry Larsons of Upper Jackson County, Thursday and Friday..

The Anton Kubenka's of Cordele attended a barbecue in Louise Sunday. They report a good time was had by all.

Mrs. J. O. B. Young, son and family of Freeport, the Curtiss Hammans and Geralds of Edna were visiting the Lep Geralds of Cordele the past weekend.

P. K. Miller, Jr., of Edna was drinking cold drinks and looking over the thermometers on the Galary of the Free State Monday of this week. It was 107 in the shade and too hot for a hell in the sun. He figgers if things don't change we will have to change the name of Cordele and t won't be Heaven.

Shorty Wells of the IHC, Dick DeNeefe of the Welding Co., were looking over business locally recently.

It was a toss up as to who had the most gates to open on their trip around the rice fields Chicken Cleveland or Donnie Fenner. Each one was agreeing to open gates for the other rather than ride alone.

A banker friend of mine told me of a new one in high finance. Seems like someone that had a note past due a couple years dropped in and after talking it up for a while said he was going to pay off the old note, just make a new one for a little extra and take the old one out of the difference

Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Cheney and baby visited the Woody Reynolds of Cordele recently. Butch Raynolds accompanies them on a fishing trip.

While listening and watching television one night recently a feller running for governor was really telling about what he would do for the Old Folks, G. F's, Farmers, Labor and whatever else he thought would help fool people into casting their little old vote for him. He really missed out on one of the biggest voting potentials there is, namely the mental and physically handicapped If he would do as Atlee's Great Britian, give Toupe's for the hairless people, glasses for the people that want them, false teeth for the toothless and these here artificial limbs for those needing them, pay for them with the taxpayers money, and then say what he has done for the peepull, but don't ever catch one of those birds telling WHO FOOTS the bill. Well, sir, it's just the Lil Old Taxpayer and as far as I am concerned they can keep those promises to themselves. Let some of them tell what they have done and are going to do with the tax dollar, start an economy program and it would surprise even them how soon there could be a reduction in the cost of running this country. But it would be a violation of the law to economize a little with the Tax Payers purse strings and that is from the Precinct level on up and including the Federal Government.

As of right now I gotta turn in my budget for the next week's supplies so Adios:

Cordele, down, in Texas is where he ran. He ran cause the ground was so hot he couldn't stand still. That's what the boy said when he took off his shoes.

Howdy, Ches! The above statement was made to me by a boy that didn't know it was so hot.

Mr. J. L. Watson is staying in the home of his son, Rolar Watson and wife of Cordele. He is being attended by a nurse. He was accompanied home by his daughter, Mrs. George Murphy, and husband, George. That Irishman with a million $ smile.

Mr. Keller Cheney has returned from the hospital at Ganado where he went for an examination. We hope that he will be up again soon. His son, Geo. K. Cheney of Baytown was visiting him last Sunday..

Mrs. J. W. Larkin's sister of Bay City, better known as Aunt Elsie Beady and a niece, a Mrs. Payne were visiting her and her son, Floyd Larkin and family of Cordele recently.

Little Laney Ross Gerald is entering the Renger Hospital in Hallettsville for an operation this coming week and we wish him a speedy return home.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Sowell of Edna were visiting relatives and friends in this vicinity one day last week.

Mr. Arthur Roden of Baytown was looking over the country and visiting old acquaintances in this locality this past weekend. His parents and another family settled in this locality in 1896. They camped their first night at the creek crossing near where the Roberts family now live.

Bobbie Roberts and friends of Katy were visiting his parents and friends in this locality recently.

Gayle Kilgore of Oklahoma and a friend of Alice were visiting friends and looking things over in Cordele last week. Gayle's father, Leo Kilgore used to be in charge of the Texas Co. Lease that Rube DeBord looks after now.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Goppert were visiting some of their poor kin folks in the Free State one day recently. But I couldn't get my hand in his pocket up to the elbow.

The rice farmers are having ideal weather in which to harvest that part of their crops that are ready. The cotton farmers only need lots more pickers along with the hot dry weather, and the cattlemen are in one heck of a shape for fall grazing. In fact, they are mostly grazing out of the feed rooms already.

Would sorta spend a little time in the Rockies, but don't think that Old Calamity would be good for a guy with the stumbles.

The Mizelle Trucking Co. had the misfortune to overturn a truck loaded with a bulldozer. Seems like in meeting another truck the shoulder of the road was wet and slipped off. Not much damage was done to either machine.

Hiway Patrolman was in Cordele on official business Monday of this week.

Johnnie Myers, reporter and general man about the place for The Edna Herald, is sure a mighty suspicious feller. When we were eating dinner and asked him to partake of the scraps. He flat wouldn't do it. He figgered maybe some unorganized Shivers supporters might put poison in a Yarborough supporter's grub. Well, sir, there ain't no use in poisoning them when we can just naturally find enough votes to beat 'em.

One thing sure about it is that Yarborough carried one box in Victoria, Yas, Suh, Mah Ole Kaintucky Home.

Mr. and Mrs. W. C. McManus of Cordele are in Galveston where Mac is going through the clinic. We wish both these men to return home in good health soon.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Webernick of Cordele are the proud parents of a baby boy born to them recently. Don't see much of Doodle any more; guess he's trying to get the young uns to follow in his footsteps.

Mr. and Mrs Bill Quarles and family are now at home in Cordele. Mrs. Quarles is the former Miss Mary Dittrich.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barecky Sr. are moving to a new home in Corpus Christi. They have been living on the Kubecka place near Cordele for several years:

Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Carruthers of Houston spent the weekend in the home of her aunt, Mrs. Mary Fiew of Cordele. She was the former Miss Jeanne Fiew of Cordele.

Mr. Jimmie Dick Clark of Fennerville made a trip to a distant city to get a new school bus for the Edna Independent School District recently. Mrs. Hamp Hardy was his relief driver.

Quite a number of people from this locality attended the revival at the Presbyterian Church in Edna last week. All enjoyed the services very much.

There will be a dinner and Turkey shoot at the Cordele Community Center on Nov. the seventh, sponsored by the Saint Joseph's Catholic Church of Cordele. Everybody turn out and have a good time as well as helping the church. There will be more about this affair later.

Mrs. E. A. Nagel of Cordele. received a surprise visit from her brother, Eddie Braun of Runge recently. He was on his way to Lavaca County at the time.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dittrich of the county capital were visiting and attending church locally Sunday of last week.

There have been a number of men coming to Cordele looking for jobs on the Trunkline Station that is to be built here soon. So far there is nothing to indicate when the building will start, but should employ quite a crew while it is under construction.

Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Pearce have returned to their home after taking care of things in the Free State while we were gone to Georgia to see Frederick. We left here on Wednesday and spent the first night in Louisiana, next a. m. had some of that coffee that will darken your complexion about 90% after drinking a cup or two. Seems like the natives are really proud of that concoction. Next night we spent in Prattsville, Ala. Enjoyed batting the breeze with some of the tourists that were there. We were really beginning to get in the Deep South. Saw a lot of men working on the road. They all wore white suits so I thought I might get a job, but one of the bosses said they were, not hiring any extra hands. All I needed to get on was to rob a peanut stand and they'd call for me later. We were in Phenix City the first day it was padlocked. It was under the Military Police. Seems that little town should be bet ter known as Hell's Half Acre. It has been wide open with no limit to the number of service men that were gyped and murdered, but when the district attorney-elect was bumped off that started the real cleanup. We were in the locality of Selma for a couple of days after there were two schools burned down. Don't believe any white man did it. Seems like there must not be any flies nor mosquitoes down there, that is, if not having any screen doors or windows is any sign. Saw lots of cotton pickers in the fields but no mechanical ones nor any Mexican pickers down in that country. Hominy grits and MoLasses are the same to those people as saurkraut and weines are to the Vatterlanders and if you'll ask them folks to sing, the National Anthem they'll sing Dixie. We arrived at Camp Gordon Friday evening and picked Frederick up there, then on Saturday, Willie Reichardt of La Ward and a boy named Herbert went to a drive-inn theatre that was putting on a show that wouldn’t be allowed in a side show in a carnival. The boys cashed their tickets and we went to South Carolina to another one. On Sunday for dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Zetka of Ganado, Willie Reichardt, Herbert ----- another couple, friends of the Zetka’s, Frederick, Shereen, the Boss and me had dinner together. That afternoon we aimed this Ford toward Texas and keep rolling. Those Radar Patrolled Highways back there keep watch over your speed but I can’t go fast enough for one of them gadgets to work. So reckon I better start working the other side of the street for now.

You kno a feller ain't never too old to learn. I sure was surprised to here some of these Lavaca County fellers talking about seasons and bag limits. When I asked them what they was talking about one of them said, we keep the season in the kitchen and there ain't no limit to the amount they can carry.

Seems like I'm a little late in doing things. Some weeks ago after taking about sixteen years to decide to go, the Boss and me drove by Cuero where we left Mom with her sister. We Forded on down to Pettus to see some folks: Well, sir, we were informed that we would have to go a little farther as the folks had been in South America with an oil company for some time. On our return we stopped at the Bzzzzzzzes near Runge for a little while, then after returning to Cuero we put in a couple calls to some more kinfolks only to find they were out of pocket and the stove cold, so as baseball goes we batted about 400 and came mighty near being out sliding home.

Well, sir, 'twern't no little child leading them, but recently an Edna Baptist was leading a couple of Edna Methodists on an inspection tour of the Free State and the surrounding locality. No names mentioned.

Some time ago, I sent a little old statement to one of my good customers in Edna.

He sent me a check without any discounting of the same along with a note saying: Pard, no discount anticipated. Thanks for charging it’s an accommodation, end of quote. Some people from Hallettsville had the misfortune to skid in the loose gravel when making a turn in Cordele and ended up in the ditch recently at night. If I ever need to be sewed up, I hope they call either a veterinarian ог someone that don't have enough practice to slow them up.
