Howdy, Folks! Cordele, Texas We regret Mrs. Clive Slovacek of Cordele is in the hospital in Wharton. We hope her condition is not serious and that she can return to her home soon. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kubecka of Cordele that has been under the Doctors care for some months is getting along as well as can be expected. They will take him to Dallas soon for another checkup. We wish him an early recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Slatter have another tax exemption via the stork route, it’s a boy born at the Jackson County Hospital in December. We all wish the youngster and his family the best of everything. The Compressor Plant north of Cordele is beginning to make headway, there has been quite a group of men employed there, for some time. The Colburn Trucking Co., of Houston moved a drilling rig onto a location west of Cordele for the Quinto Creek Production Co. The Houston Pipe Line Co., and others have been lying some gathering lines for gas in this community. So far this year there has been 1.9 inch of rain in our rain gauge here in Cordele. Some report more and some less in other localities around about. The Thermometer on the front gallery was 37 degrees this a. m. at 6 o'clock. I'd rather have sunshine cause I can generally find the shadow of a post. Mr. and Mrs. Lep Gerald and Mrs. J. R. Fiew made a business trip to Victoria one day last week, (I reckon it was mostly pleasure). Mr. Anton Kubenka sold out his cattle business to a man from Needville. Anton is going to stay with ginning and farming. The Alfonse Sbrusch family of Cordele and the Frank Faltysek's of Ganado were dinner guests of the Kubenkas Sunday. Don't forget the March of Dimes supper at the Cordele Community Center, Friday Night, the fourteenth, which is this week. Everybody come have a good time and donate to a good cause. Lathy Jetton and Young Meadors of the Meador Bros. Welding Shop of Edna were looking things over in the Free State of Cordele one day this week. Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Jacobs of Brushy Mott were looking things over locally recently on their way home from the County Capital. It’s Pfc Frederick C. Goppert of Okinawa now. He received his first stripe recently. He's looking forward to the year 56 with much optimism, let's hope it's not like in '40, when they sang that little song, "I'll Be Back In A Year Little Darling." Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nagel, Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Friedrich and Bruce of Arneckeville, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Nagel of Edna,, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Goppert of El Campo, Mrs. Annie Sager of Houston, Richard Nagel of Maryland, Mr. Jack Deyton and Miss Shirley Deyton of Lolita were among those visiting Mrs. E. A. Nagel and family of Cordele the past weekend. Yuh see, whenever a feller wants to find out what his folks think of him he just wants to set down and evaluate his Christmas presents. Now then by looking at mine I am sure that I have their opinion down about right. I received a salt and pepper shaker from son. He said for Mom to salt me down so you would be here when he gets home and a billfold with a chain on it so I wouldn't absent mindedly forget it and leave it some where and to prove that they believe I am getting old, a pair of sock supporters to wear with these elastic top socks, but then I got a letter from a little blonde headed gal that made me feel like a millionaire so I guess life is still worth living.

Howdy Folks: Cordele, Texas Reports from Tyler, Texas, say that Mrs. Opal Fiew has been getting along very well. Mr. B. L. Fiew, husband, Jane Fiew of Cordele and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Nickels of Edna visited her the past weekend. The Paul Slatters have brought their little son home, from the hospital where he has been undergoing treatment. Miss Ann Fiew, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Fiew of Cordele and Mr. Al Lowery were married the latter part of last month. He was inducted into the Armed Services later. From the looks of things in Anton Kubenka's front yard there will be another wedding in the community soon. Tony is about to become one of the happily married boys of this locality. Our best to the young folks. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Fenner of Upper Cordele were among those from this vicinity that were looking over things at the Livestock Show in Houston recently. Mr. Jess Kern of Star Route was visiting and looking over in general in the Free State one day this week.. Mr. Leon Gage and wife of Pearsall were visiting his mother, Mrs. W. C. McManus and husband of Cordele this week. Leon and the, Missus were honeymooning on this trip. The revival being held at the Way Side Chapel has been well attended. It will last for several more nights. Everyone is welcome and invited to attend. Mr. Mac was very much surprised to look back in his car and see flames eating up his upholstery. He was fortunate to be close enough to a service station that put it out before too much damage was done. Hans Goppert of Houston and Mr. and Mrs. Louie Nagel of Edna were among those visiting Mrs. E. A. Nagel and family in Cordele recently. Mrs. Kent Carruthers of Houston (the former Miss Jeanne Fiew, (Willowy Wisp of the Prairie) was the honor guest of a miscellaneous shower held at the Cordele community center. She received many beautiful and useful gifts from a group of her former neighbors and friends after which refreshments were served by the ladies. Several men that were present can testify as to the quality of these things. Everyone wished her a happy trip on the sea of matrimony. A group of neighbors spent the evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Roberts Monday of this week. It is rumored that the Roberts may move to Katy in the near future. With a rainfall of 2.8 in-so-far this month there is a possibility of enough moisture to make (the moisture meet) something that hasn't happened often recently. The Quinte Creek is supposed to have made a gas well west of Cordele and the company drilling above Cordele is testing some supposedly new sands that look promising. There has been a group of men buying up right away for a pipe line gathering system locally and the construction company are making a good showing on the Trunkline Compresser Station above Cordele and last but not least, I got part of my fencing done. A week or two ago when a bunch of us guys went to Austin to see what makes the chamber of commerce wheels run, we had a very entertaining time, enjoyed the speaking, lunch, etc. Run into the Hon. W. T. McNeil, Buck Shot Lane and some other celebrities and had several inquiries about some of our local citizens. One feller wanted to know how my friend, Beans Rawley was doing and another feller put on a demonstration of changing a lemon into a peach and our chauffeur, Clifton Hicks took us by some rare sights. So if you are looking for a day of entertainment just get him to get together a crowd composed of Dick Schumaker, Rolar Watson, me and one or two others, then get in that ranch wagon and do the Lindberg for the rest of the day. Just set back and relax, Clifton drives nice and easy and that Ford don't rattle.

Cordele, Texas. Howdy Folks, including Ches. Well, sir, there isn't so much news this week excepting weddings and honeymoons. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Kubenka of Cordele have returned from their honeymoon and are getting things in shape to settle down to a life time of living. Last Thursday evening at six o'clock at the Lolita Baptist Church, Miss Shereen Deyton of Lolita and Frederick Goppert of Cordele were united in marriage. They left immediately after the reception for a short honeymoon. We all wish both these young couples the best of everything and a long and happy married life, PFC. Victor Zetka and wife and son visited her parents the Ray Anders of Cordele, Saturday. Victor has been on maneuvers in Alabama and returned to his outfit Sunday night. The Red Fiews are having more room added to their home on the H. J. Porter Lease. Bro. Busch has been doing the painting job. There is a well drilling outfit putting down a well on the Hollingsworth Ranch and the South Texas Oil & Gas Co. is putting down wells on the Wearden Ranch north of Cordele. Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Friedrichs and Bruce, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nagel of Arneckeville, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Goppert of El Campo and Mr. and Mrs. Louie Nagel of Edna were recent visitors in the Free State of Cordele. Alfonse Sbrusch made a business trip to Yoakum the middle of the week pertaining to agriculture. The cotton and corn farmers have been busy planting and getting things ready for their crops. The rice farmers are getting their land in shape as well as their pumping equipment for this season. Cattle are beginning to (shed off and pick up) after a winter of generally short rations. Lots of people get discouraged when cattle prices are cheap and feed high. If you are a fair weather cattle man, better stay out of the business as it takes, a strong heart to see your feed money go for what looks like a small return. But if you stay with the old cow, she'll stay with you. The Honorable Dick DeNeefe of the City of Edna was out looking things over prior to the Texana Days Election. Don’t know how the election will come out, but I’ll…that he has more hair on his face according to the little amount on his head of any candidate that will be running, and Old Man Bill Quarles of Cordele is taking the easy way on his razor—just letting it rest. When I met Tips Hensley in his truck, sorta looked like a bear back of the steering wheel, and I’m sorta scared to say what I think some of these others look like. Better ring off for now.

Howdy, Folks: Well, Sir, here's another week starting with moisture, 1.8 in. Saturday night and Sunday a.m. Should sorta make some of these old hides soften up and put season in the ground. We regret that W. C. McManus is back in the hospital again. We hope he gets to return home soon. Deacon Whit Denn of Vanderbilt is relieving him while he is gone. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hollub and family of Moulton and the Edward Popps of Hilje were among those visiting in the Anton Kubenka home in Cordele recently. The young Tony Kubenka's are moving into their new home and will soon be at home at Cordele, in the State of Texas. Leonard Cherry of Edna dropped in for a visit while in this vicinity recently. Mrs. Vera Green and Gal Friends of Edna and vicinity stopped in to find out where they were while on, a recent trip over the new Hiway 530. What I mean it's easier to get lost in, Cordele than any town its size in America. Mr. and Mrs. Hip Hobson and son of Edna and the Frank Goldmans of Ganado visited in the August Padons last Sunday. Mrs. Geo. K. Cheney and sons of Baytown spent the weekend visiting Mrs. Sena Cheney and the I. S. Clements Sr. of Cordele. The Boss, Sherley and Me took Frederick to San Antonio on his way back to his base on Okinawa. He called Monday night to let us know he was leaving by plane Tuesday. Here's to a safe flight and may the landing be easy. Cecil Martin of the Lower Booster Station of Edna was visiting in Cordele and looking over the Trunkline Compressor plant in this vicinity recently. Leland Jones of El Campo and young Wakefield of Wharton were looking after their interests in Cordele the past Monday. Leland is sporting one of those new air conditioned automobiles. Pvt. Al Lowery and wife are visiting his parents in Pasadena while he is home on furlo from the Army. Ann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Red Fiew of Cordele. Mr. and Mrs. K. Carruthers of Houston visited her aunt, Mrs. J. R. Fiew of Cordele on Easter Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Larkin and Kathy (hoofed) it into the Dittrich home for a visit on Easter. Mr. and Mrs. Lep Gerald of Cordele enjoyed a visit from his brother and wife, the Kernel Geralds of Refugio last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mixon of Edna were driving around this locality last Sunday afternoon. Don't rush off so soon next time, Freddy. Stopped by the Johnsons of Wharton on way back from the little city of Houston. Marshall was sorta taking things easy for a change. Says he will be out and around 'fore long. Every now and then I hear about how hard some of these policemen in the city are. Well, sir, if there are as many ignorant drivers as I am there, don't reckon they can be blamed much. Trying to find my way to the Freeway and some other places during rush hours is quite a job for me. There were a couple of them fellers that were mighty good about giving directions, directing traffic and ducking rain at the same time.

Mrs. Leo Kubecka is attend- ing their son at a clinic in the Valley. Mrs. Sena Cheney of Cordele has been helping take care of the rest of the Kubecka children. Mrs. H. L. Wolf of the Trunkline Station of Cordele has been having eye trouble recently; has had a couple of minor eye operations that are rather troublesome. Rolar Watson of Cordele visited his father, J. L. Watson and the Murphys in Houston Sunday. Mr. Watson hasn't being doing so well lately. We all wish all of these folks an early return to good health. Mrs. Ivan Fenner of Upper Cordele has returned home from Roxton where she has been with her mother, Mrs. Creed, who has been on the sick list for some time. The Alvin Dittrich family of Cordele and friends of Edna were fishing and boating on the river (before) Vanderbilt last Sunday. Quite a number of local citizens enjoyed the Singing Convention at the Baptist Church in Ganado last Sunday. Mrs. J. R. Fiew of Cordele spent the night with the members of the Cordele Poor Farm last Sunday. Mrs. E. A. Nagel spent the night with Mrs. Sena Cheney Monday night. Mrs. J. O. B. Young of Port Arthur is visiting her sister and husband, the Lep Geralds of Coracle. Bill Gerald visited his parents Monday of this week. The Rev. and Mra. O. A. Busch of the Wayside Chapel are spending a few weeks in California. Her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Mayhorn, are looking after the church affairs while they are gone. Red Fiew and son, Jo Boy, visited his aunt, Mrs. Mary Fiew of Cordele one night recently. Alvin Dittrich of Cordele and Edward Popp of Hillje are helping Mr. Anton Kubenka and Tony overhaul the Kubenka Gin in Cordele. Anton is a real ginner and with this new equipment should really turn out the sample Mrs. Doc Hunter and Mrs. Annie Strane were looking things over in the Free State recently. Mrs. Strane has (been a knowin) Mrs. Nagel for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Leeroy Guibertlaw of Corpus Christi visited the Kubenkas last week Wednesday. A couple of bundles of single blessedness of Edna stopped by to gas up while on their way to supper at the Ivan Fenners Tuesday evening. The Boss and Me took another of those fruitless trips a week ago last Sunday when we went to DeWitt Co. Nobody home but the sink and it was full of dishes. Stopped by Reno race track coming home and watched the races, met the Duke of Duval and if nothing else, he has a sense of humor. Last Sunday put in one of our famous (collect) calls to a sister and brother in Kansas and found out that the dust was heavier here than it was there that day, with the visibility locally at one-half to three-quarter mile; what must it have been in the Panhandle? Mr. and Mrs. Hans Goppert and Mrs. Annie Sager of Houston, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Goppert of El Campo were among those visiting us Folks last Sunday. There was a couple of fellers here from down Palacios way recently, and when I asked them if they knew a Fred Goppert down there, they said, No sir, but they knew a Goppertstein that was in the hardware business there. Seems like I am a little late as usual. We have a vinegar jar (didn't use a fruit jar cause it would be too tame) and a picture sent us by one of these here Candidates for Texana Day Sheriff. I think there is a little misstatement in this paid political advertisement, as fur as being neat is concerned. His suspenuers cross over his shoulders same as mine, that is if'n I had any. Handsome, well sir, I can't see that on account of the brusn; Clean cut, maybe, if the belt overnanging is reduced a bit. QUIET, so’s a bull in a china closet; Trim, well, sir, can't vouch for that; Good Politician, BetenUrBoots he is. If him and old Baldy ever stage a race, it’ll be a daisy. Well, that's my stump speech for my candidate if you want to elect a man that will do his best to fill the jug and I don't mean the one with corn squeezings, vote for Dick DeNeete and be assured that I won't be allowed to take in the town. Adios.

Cordele, Texas. Howdy Everybody! Ain't no use dating this epistle, as Evans'l cut the date anyhow. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. McManus are at home after a few days absence. The Boss and Me attended the Indianola, days doings at that Place a couple of weeks ago. Among those from Edna were Mr. and Mrs. Cap Staples and Mr. and Mrs. Medley Hensler; also from Cordele were Mr. and Mrs. Jess Kern and his mother, Mrs. Kern. She was born in Old Indianola in 1870 and still gets around like a (yung 'un.) More happy celebrations to you, Mrs. Kern. While visiting Cappy Staples I just naturally got around to asking him his prescription for retiring. He said he didn't retire. He just gradually dropped out. Mr. and Mrs. Louie Nagel, Dick Nagel of Edna, Rev. and Mrs. Kyle Nagel of Lolita, Richard Nagel of Uncle Sam's Navy and family were among those visiting Mrs. E. A. I always thought that I was sorta sorry; but when a Preacher friend of mine recently sent me a card from the Rest Home of Alcatraz my stock really took a slump. Guess the saying mother's love surmounts everything proves that she is the only one that sees nothing but the good in us.

A few days ago some fellow wanted to eat a lunch by the road and wanted to know if it was harmful to eat things from a can. Well, sir, I told him that if there was anything harmful about eating from a tin can in the days before BBLI, that's short for (before be line increase) my friend O. B. Fenner wouldn't never lived to move to Edna. You know if you look long enough for something and want to find them you'll eventually have a red letter day through.

Howdy Folks! Cordele, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Clive Slovacek of Cordele are the proud parents of a baby boy born at the Blasingame Hospital in Wharton last week. Deacon and Mrs. Wayne Silliman, mail carrier out of Ganado, are back on the job after an extended vacation trip "Up Noth." Looks like the trip did them good. The Doodle Webernicks family have been enjoying an outing at the bay, don't, think they caught many fish. Harold Sells of Edna was visiting a spell while out selling Quanset Huts, and other kinds of buildings. L. O. Bosewetter of Victoria, a former resident of Cordele, was visiting and telling tales of the days of living in Cordele. Seems like the man teacher they had those days sorta believed in taking a siesta each day, starting about noon; said that they didn't take the bother to wake him and generally went home without him turning them out. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Nagel of Edna, Rev. and Mrs. Kyle Nagel of Weimar, Mrs. Earl Goppert of El Campo, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nagel of Arneckeville, Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Busby of Runge, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Johnson of Wharton, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Allen of Hallettsville, Mrs. Julia Dittrich, Evelyn and Dwight of Cordele were among those visiting Mrs. E. Mrs. Kenith Hamilton of Cordele had a minor operation on her eye Tuesday of this week: Hope she does fine and is over it soon. Tuesday if Flag Day. What does it mean to you? To me it means that the first Gopperts came to this country 120 years afo to live under and serve this Flag and to my knowledge there has never been but one to return there for a visit except under that Flag when following it in time of war. I have never known one of them that asked deferment during an emergency and at the present time everyone of service age in the State of Texas is serving under it well. My hat is off to that piece of bunting and wish to live under no other. May the Lord continue to smile on it.

She has reached the age when the number of years don't bear down so heavy. Seems to me, like after putting up with me for more than half of them she'd be entitled to a shining star; anyhow, I wish her many more, each one better than the last. Mr. and Mrs. George Cheney and sons of Baytown were visiting their parents the past weekend. Mrs. Sena Cheney returned home with them for a couple of days. Brother Whit Denn of Vanderbilt, that's a little village with a Big School, has been looking after business on the Humble Lease here at Cordele lately. Having to put up with Me on this end and Bob on that end, don't believe there’s enough water in the river to wash the effects away, whatch yuh think Bob? A feller told me a pretty good definition of temper the other day. It was, That which you can afford to keep if you're right, but can not afford to loose if you're wrong. The Morton family is having a Bar-B-Q and family reunion at their place near Sandies bridge on the road to El Campo on Sunday the third; its east of the Eddie Jacobs place in Upper Cordele. The Dalton Friedrichs of Arneckeville and the Earl Gopperts of El Campo were recent visitors in the Olds Folks Home in Cordele. Mrs. J. W. Larkin of Cordele and sister, Miss. Elsie Beatty of Bay City, have returned to the Larkins home in Cordele. Kathy says, I sure glad that Grandma is home again. Doodle Webernick has a new cotton picking machine which he is expecting to get started in the near future. Lawrence Sbrusch has a new tractor and, by the way, he is driving up north of here; sorta believe that maybe he has a new gal up in that direction. The Cordele gin is fixed up with new equipment that should really gets the job done and all that is necessary is for the crop to ripen a bit so that things will get rolling. Yuh know this is a small world after all. We talked to Frederick in Okinawa one night recently and had better reception than we have had many times just talking as far as Ganado. When you can hear a voice that is several thousands miles away, it makes you feel closer together and when you can fly that far between chaws of terbaccy that's different than it was in 1906 when me and my folks crossed the state of the Sunflower in a covered wagon.

The South Texas Oil & Gas Co. has moved across Hiway 111 where they are doing some work at present. I visited Mr. Joseph Wearden at his office in the Groce Wearden Co. at Victoria recently. He looks well and keeps on the job part of each day. Any wanting to do building contracting on a big scale should look up Chester Evans Esp. He gets 'er done shipshape and right side up, if you'll let him do the measuring. I know of a letter that was postmarked in Okinawa on the 7th of this month and was received in Cordele on the 10th. I also know of one letter that was mailed in Victoria to the Free State on the 7th and has not been received here yet. That goes to show that distance does not make much difference any more. A friend of mine was sorta riding me, about hearing that I was rated as Public Enemy No. 1. Claimed that I oughta make some kind of statement due to the fact that he heard I had been in the custody of some of these here law officers. Well, sir, I'll tell the facts about this doins. Some time ago I was taking the Boss to, a doctor in Victoria. I had a flat tire before getting to Edna. When I left there I wasn't paying any attention to sorta putting driving on and before I knew it one of these here cars with a sign on the side asked me to pull over and a little fellow wearing a Sam Brown belt told me that I was going a little over the legal speed limit. Course that wasn't as bad as being a Dillinger, but if I ever run for any of these offices I reckon I probably will hear that some one has an affidavit that I was public enemy No 1 and very wild, So Long

Tony Kubenka and I spent the day in Austin a short-time ago We carefully rolled the windows up and locked the doors as we went by, the U know what place. I might belong there, but so far have slipped past each time I was in that locality P. K. Miller Jr. out of Edna and Hollis Miller of Cordele stopped in while looking for some of these here rice farmers that need their services We attended a supper at the Edna Cafe Monday night that was put on by Ye Ed. By the amount of fried chicken that was consumed I'd say that they at least acted like a bunch of Methodists. Hardeman Staples received a fine watch for his fifty years of service with The Herald as did AJ Sowders for 25 years. Cappy Staples, the former Editor, also spoke of the length of time he owned the paper. One thing about Cappy was that he was always very plain in his stand on issues. In fact to read The Herald was to read what Cappy stood for May the guests and The Herald have a long and useful place in this county It won't be long before the conventions start. There possibly won't be much of a turn out as usual Then after the doins and elections are over there will be a lot of holloring how things turn out. Well, folks, if you don't take part in these affairs then you can't blame no one but yourself if you are not satisfied with the way things turn out. Do as you really think best for you. Help keep America great. then you need no apology.
