Ben Williams

Mr. Ben Williams, 85, died at the Matagorda General Hospital on August 30. He was born on July 2, 1893 in Gainesmore. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Angel Williams, four daughters, Mrs. Rachel Austin of Freeport, Mrs. Jessie Mae Parks of Bay City, Mrs. Lucinda Grice of Angleton, Mrs. Margaret Austin of Cedar Lane; three nephews, Rev. Morris Roberts of Van Vleck, Elijah Roberts of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Walter Roberts of Sweeny. Services will be held at the Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, on Saturday, September 2, at 2:00 p. m. Rev. Lloyd Brown will officiate, interment at Bethlehem Cemetery, Cedar Lake. Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Francis Williams

Carolyn Francis Williams, 64, went home to be with her Lord Monday, September 15, 2008, surrounded by family and friends in League City, TX. She was born March 8, 1944, in Matagorda County, TX. Before retirement she worked in the healthcare field. She was known for her love for her grandchildren and her dedication to family functions.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her father James Peters and her mother Earline Peters; her husband Lexie Williams; daughter Paula Ann Williams; brothers James Peters and Earl Peters.

She is survived by her sons Seautry “JR” Harkless and John Williams; daughters Savannah Taylor (Richard), Bonita Harkless, Rotonda Harkless, Brenda Jackson (Joe), Leslie Amos (Howard), and God given daughter Miracle Smith; granddaughters Latoya Harkless, Antoinette Harkless, Rickesha Harkless, Harmony Harkless, Ashlee Vallery, Rochelle Briscoe, Ariannah Amos, Lexi Amos, Damica Amos, Reynaiya Alexander and Ashreal Amos; grandsons Nathaniel Vallery, Jr., Robert Alford, Jr., Howard Amos, Jr., Paul Martin, Jr. and Kdreyion “Trey” Smith; God-children Brandon Stelley and Dominique Corpus; sister-in-law Grace Williams; life-long friends Patricia Holt Stelly and Herman Biggers.

Visitation will be Monday, September 22, 2008, from 6-8 PM at Carnes Funeral Home, Texas City, TX. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Mother of Zion Church in Bay City, TX with interment to follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake, TX.

Clarinda Williams

Sister Clarinda Williams, daughter of Clarinda Willis was born August 26, 1892, in the Cedar Lake Community, Matagorda County.

She joined the Bethlehem Christian Church in 1908, during the pastorate of Rev. Henry Woodard, Sr. She attended public school in this community and upon completion of her work therein, attended Guadalupe College, Seguin, Texas.

She was married to Joel Williams, Sr., the son of Amy and Polk Williams in 1915. To this union seven children were born; four girls and three boys; Mesdames Fay Woodard, Wilhelm Moye, Tena L. Simien, Girtha L. Woodard, Messrs. Joel Williams, Jr., Ralph Williams, and Augustus Williams. Other survivors are fifteen grandchildren, three brothers, three sisters, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was a very active and diligent local and state church worker. She held the offices of Secretary of local C W F, District Key Woman for District V, Chairman of Church Membership Committee, Assistant Secretary of Bethlehem Christian Church, and Chairman of Program Committee until her death Wednesday morning, February 5, 1964, at 3:20 A. M. in the Newgulf Hospital, Newgulf, Texas.

Demosesneeds Leon Williams

Funeral services for Demosesneeds Leon Williams, 35, of Angleton, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, with the Rev. K. W. Bree, pastor, and Elder Fred Jones, eulogist.

Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home chapel, with family visitation from 6 until 8 p.m.

He was born in Bay City, Texas, October 4, 1969, to Fred Baugh, Jr. and Velva Williams and passed away April 7, 2005 in Houston, Texas.

A correctional officer with Ramsey Unit 1 in Rosharon, Texas, he is survived by: his mother, Velva Williams of Angleton; one sister, Shanetta Beard of Houston; nine aunts; five uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Cedric Dunevant, Ronnie Hill, Terry Mack, Arthur McBride, Adewale Sallu and Nathaniel Wade.

Everette Williams

Funeral services for Everette Williams, 49, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at 11 a.m., at Healing Waters Church in Bay City, with Bishop Freddie Austin, eulogist.

Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Texas.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 8, from 2 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Williams was born in Freeport, Texas, Saturday, July 11, 1953, to Abraham Williams and Willie Urps Williams, and passed away Saturday, Nov. 2 at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include: his wife, Becky Williams and two step-children; his mother, Willie Urps Moore of Bay City; three sisters, Louvenia Williams of Houston, Ester Williams and Mary Lou Williams, both of Bay City; two brothers, Thurman Williams of Bay City,and Lexie Williams of Rosharon; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gussie Williams
July 15, 1900 – August 18, 1985

On July 15, 1900, a baby boy was born to Silline and Jimmie Williams in Brazoria County, whom they named Gussie.

He accepted Christ at an early age, and united with Bethlehem Christian Church, where he was a faithful member until his health began to fail.

Gussie departed this life on Sunday, August 18, 1985, at 2:50 A.M. at UTMB Hospital, Galveston, Texas, at 85 years, 1 month and 3 days.

Gussie had married Helen Woodard on February 8, 1946.

He leaves to mourn his homegoing, a loyal and devoted wife, Mrs. Helen Williams of Cedar Lake; one daughter, Mrs. Estella Marshall of Cedar Lake; two sons, Chester Woodard and L. D. Woodard of Houston; 37 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Louie Parks of Cedar Lake; one brother, Peter Roberson of Houston, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Ida Brown-Williams

Funeral service for Mrs. Ida Brown-Williams, age 85, of Sweeny, will be held Wednesday, June 21st, at 2:00 P. M., at Allen Memorial Church of God in Christ in Sweeny, with Rev. Eugene Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be Tuesday until 9 P. M. in the Chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

Mrs. Williams was born November 14, 1909, to Irvin Brown and Mary Jane Miller Brown, in Ashwood, Texas, and died June 15, 1995, at Sweeny Community Hospital in Sweeny, Texas.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Victoria Davis of LaMarque, and Ms. Velva Williams of Sweeny; and six sons, Roosevelt Boone of Victoria, Ernest Williams, Sr. of Rosharon, David Williams of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Perry Williams of Sweeny, Howard Williams of Port Lavaca, and Monroe Williams, Jr. of Los Angeles, California. Also four sisters, Mrs. Elnora Boone and Mrs. Alice Mae Jones, both of Markham, Mrs. Mary Sayles of Compton, California, and Mrs. Sylvia McDonald of Los Angeles, California. She also leaves a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers include Charles Boone, Wade Davis, Shedrick Helms, Keith Rhodes, Dietrich Waddy, Jimmie Williams and Walter Woods.

Isham Williams Sr.

Funeral services for Isham Williams Sr., 76, of Cedar Lake will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday at Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake with the Rev. Kenneth Bree officiating. Burial will follow at the Bethlehem Christian Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a. m. to 9 p. m. Wednesday at Dixon Funeral Home, Brazoria.

Williams died May 4, 1992 at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson. He was a member of the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake.

Williams is survived by his wife, Frances Williams of Cedar Lake; four sons, Kerwin L. Williams of Brazoria and Isham Williams Jr., Michael Williams and Everett Williams, all of Houston; three daughters, Betty Moffett and C. Bernadette Bryant, both of Houston, and Karen Polk of Bay City; a brother, Cal Green Jr. of Killeen; a sister, Texanna James of Brazoria; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Jerome Brown, Frank Petteway, S. L. Bryant, Rufus Woodard, Lester Urps and Hubert Brown Jr. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Dixon Funeral Home of Brazoria is in charge of arrangements.

Joel Williams Jr.

Joel Williams Jr., 46, of Star Route Box 31, Bay City, died Sunday at Diagnostic Center Hospital in Houston. A member of the Christian church, Williams was principal of Van Vleck High School, a resident of the Cedar Lake community, and a member of the VFW. He was born Sept. 24, 1930, in Cedar Lake, and served in the U. S. Air Force for four years. He is survived by his father, Joel Williams Sr. of Cedar Lake, four sisters, Mrs. Faye Woodard, Mrs. Wilhelm Moye and Mrs. Girtha Woodard of Cedar Lake, and Mrs. Tena Simien of Sweeny; one brother, Augustus Williams Sr. of Houston. Funeral services will be at Bethlehem Christian Church of Cedar Lake on Wednesday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Lloyd Brown officiating. Interment will be at Bethlehem Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Texas. Active pallbearers will be Louis Brown, James Ashton, Harold Sargent, Irving Brown, Alexander Durley, John Allineice and Henry Henderson. Arrangements are under the direction of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

Van Vleck Principal Dies

Joel Williams Jr., 46, principal of Van Vleck High School and long-time resident of the Cedar Lake Community, died Sunday night at Diagnostic Center Hospital in Houston following a serious illness.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Christian Church of Cedar Lake.

Born and reared in Cedar Lake, Williams lived there most of his life. He taught school in Wharton for 14 years and then moved to Houston to attend Texas Southern School of Law before returning to Cedar Lake as a permanent resident.

Williams had been principal of Van Vleck Elementary School for approximately three years and assistant principal of the high school for about two years before his appointment as principal six years ago.

He became ill in May, at which time he spent almost a month at Diagnostic Center. He entered the hospital again eight days before his death.

A member of Bethlehem Christian Church, Williams helped organize University Christian Church and Scottcrest Christian Church both of Houston, and served as state secretary to the Texas Christian Missionary Fellowship.

He served four years in the U. S. Air Force, and was a member of the VFW.

Williams was also a member of the Classroom Teachers Association, National Educator's Association, Texas State Teachers Association, the National and Texas Associations of Secondary School Principals and a member of the Board of Directors Matagorda Mental Health Clinic.

Joel Williams, Sr.

Funeral services for Mr. Joel Williams, Sr., age 105, of Cedar Lake, will be held Sunday, June 11th, at 2:00 p. m. at the Bethlehem Christian Church in Cedar Lake, with the Rev. Kenneth W. Bree officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Cedar Lake.

Visitation will be Saturday until 9 p. m. in the Chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 til 9 p. m. in the Chapel.

Mr. Williams was born December 28, 1889, to Polk Williams and Amy Hawkins Williams, in the Hawkinsville Community, Matagorda County, Texas, and died June 8, 1995, at 3:30 a. m. at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

His religious affiliations included membership with the Bethlehem Christian Church for 95 years. He also served as Church Secretary for 78 years, as an Elder and member of the Deacon Board. Prior to his illness, he served as Sunday School Superintendent.

He graduated from Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama in 1912, with a degree in civil engineering. Among his career experiences include teaching and principalship in Public School from 1936-1966. He served as teacher of the Cedar Lake School from 1936-1942, at which time he was promoted to principalship, a position he held until 1952. When the Cedar Lake School consolidated with the Van Vleck School District in 1952, Joel Williams transferred to O. H. Herman School where he taught mathematics until his retirement.

Among his accomplishments include receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from Tuskegee University, he was especially proud of being taught by George Washington Carver, and sharing his school years with Booker T. Washington. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Christian Missionary Fellowship, and also was the recipient of the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Service to the Cedar Lake Community. He was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and a member of the Gulf Coast Masonic Lodge #272.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Faye Woodard, Mrs. Wilhelm Moye and Mrs. Girtha Woodard, all of Cedar Lake, and Mrs. Tena Simien of Sweeny. Also one son, Augustus Williams, Sr. of Houston. He leaves also a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and also a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives, and a family of many, many friends.

Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clarinda Gee Williams, February 5, 1964, and two sons, Ralph Williams, December 19, 1974, and Joel Williams, Jr., August 21, 1977.

Active pallbearers include his grandsons Tracy Simien, Arthur Williams, Augustus Williams, Jr., Christopher Williams, Danny Woodard and Horace Woodard, Jr. Honorary pallbearers include the Deacons and Elders of Bethlehem Christian Church.

Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home of Bay City.
