The regular business meeting of The Woman's Club met at the home of the Pres. Jan. 4, 1912.

 

Called to order by Pres. Mrs. Knight acting as sec. Minutes of meeting at College Chapel read and approved. Mention made of the postponed Xmas program.

 

Bill allowed Mrs. Knight 50c for postage as editor. 29 present.

 

Talk by Mrs. Hurd on past yrs work.

 

Mrs. Jones appointed chairman.

The Woman's Club met at Hotel Collegeport Thurs. Jan. 18, 1912. Called to order by Pres. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. The sec. distributed slips with the names of members who had paid the am't of $1.00 for dues crediting them with full am't dues paid up to Jan. 1912.

 

Motion made by Mrs. Hansel to drop names on membership list of those who had moved from our midst. ____

 

Club instructed Treas. to pay Miss Smith $2.50 balance due on reception.

 

The Pres. made suggestions in regard to advisory board.

 

On motion of Mrs. House the Club elected Mrs. Van Ness as member of advisory board. Motion carried.

 

On motion of Mrs. Hansel that Mrs. House act as member of Advisory board. Motion carried. On motion of Mrs. Elmer that Mrs. Culp act as member of Advisory board carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. Van Ness, sec. by Mrs. House that the Club elect three ladies to assist advisory board in formulating plans for yrs. work.

 

On motion by Mrs. Hansel, sec. by Mrs. Van Ness that Miss Smith assist Advisory Board in arranging for yrs. work. Motion carried.

 

On motion of Mrs. Kirkpatrick, sec. by Mrs. Ross, that Mrs. Hansel assist advisory board to arrange work for the year. Motion carried.

 

On motion of Mrs. Travis, sec. [by] Mrs. Hansel that Mrs. Corse act with Advisory board to arrange work for the year. Motion carried.

 

The election of members of membership com. was called for.

 

On motion of Mrs. Van Ness, sec. by Mrs. Smith, that Mrs. Kirkpatrick act as chairman of membership com. Motion carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. House and sec. by Miss Smith, Miss Elmer act as member of membership com. carried. Motion by Mrs. Hansel, sec. by Mrs. House that Mrs. Judin act as member of Membership com. Motion carried.

 

The Pres. then spoke of the matter of cleaning up day in Collegeport. On motion by Mrs. Hansel, sec. by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, that we observed Jan. 19 & 20 as cleaning up day for Collegeport. Motion carried.

 

The Club adjourned to meet in two wks. The place of meeting to be announced later.

The Advisory Board of the Woman's Club met at the home of the Pres. Mrs. Hurd Jan. 25, 1912.

 

Called to order by Pres.

 

Report given by Pres. of the work of the boys cleaning up day, Jan. 20.

 

Motion made by Mrs. Hansel, sec. by Mrs. Van Ness, that the report given be sent to the Industrial League asking them to have the debris removed.

 

The subject of yrs. work was then taken up. Suggestions were made by Mrs. Corse in regard to Natural History study.

Mrs. House spoke of Mothers Day.

Motion made by Mrs. Van Ness, sec. by Mrs. Hansel that Mrs. House act as Supt. of Domestic Science. Motion carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. Corse, sec. by Miss Morris, that Mrs. Hansel take charge of the Educational Dept. Motion carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. Culp that Mrs. Van Ness act as chairman of music com. Motion carried.

 

Mrs. Hurd suggested that three ladies be elected to assist the supt. of the different dept. of work.

 

On motion by Miss Morris, sec. by Mrs. Culp, that Mrs. Ross and Kirkpatrick assist in the work in Domestic Science. Carried.

 

Motion made that Mrs. Culp and Miss Smith assist in Musical Dept.

 

Motion by Mrs. Ross, sec. by Mrs. Hansel, that Mrs. Jones and Knight assist in the work of Educational Dept. Carried.

 

Miss Myrtle Morris was appointed editress of the Collegeport Woman's Club for the year 1912.

The Woman's Club met at Hotel Collegeport Thur. Feb. 1, 1912. Called to order by Pres. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

 

Mrs. Van Ness gave an outline of the work of the Music Com. for the yr.

 

Mrs. House gave plans of the work in the Domestic Science Dept. Mrs. Hurd gave an interesting talk on this showing the need and benefits derived from taking up this study. Mrs. Hansel as leader & chr. of the Educational Dept. gave an outline of the work of this dept. giving topics for each meeting of the year.

 

Mrs. Knight read an interesting paper telling of her pioneer days in Collegeport. This was supplemented with current events.

 

This being Library Day a number of members present made a gift of a book for the public library. No. of books rec'd. 17.

 

Mrs. Jones reported that Mr. Wilkinson had offered the use of his office building for temporary reading room and library.

 

On motion by Mrs. Van Ness it was voted that we accept Mr. Wilkinson's offer.

 

On motion by Mrs. Knight that a list of books given be made, carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. Knight it was voted that the library be opened Feb. 10.

 

Mrs. Hurd suggested that a permanent site be selected for a Library building.

 

On motion by Mrs. Hansel that a com. of three ladies by appt. to select lots for Library building. Motion carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick it was voted that the Educational Com. select location for Library.

 

On motion by Mrs. Travis that the Club select three men to assist in selecting lots. The names of Burton D. Hurd, E. C. Van Ness & M. A. Travis were suggested. On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick that the gentlemen named be asked to act with ladies on this com. to select lots for Library building, carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick it was voted that the Club purchase the library of Domestic Science text books.

 

On motion by Mrs. Van Ness that we accept offer of Mrs. Hurd to send for books, carried.

The Collegeport Woman's Club met at the Hotel Thur. Feb. 15. Subject for the day Domestic Economy. Mrs. House as leader read an excellent paper on the Food Problem. Current events read by Mrs. Travis, Mrs. Ross and an interesting paper on the Cost of Food. Mrs. Kirkpatrick read a fine paper on Food and the Body.

 

Mrs. Hurd gave a chart talk which was very instructive and enjoyed by all present.

Piano selection by Miss Smith was greatly appreciated.

Reading Kitchen Philosophy by Miss Kern

Solo by Mrs. Culp was very much enjoyed.

 

After the rendering of program a short business session was held.

 

Mesdames Luce and Roberts and Misses Christine and Elsie Walter were voted as members of the Club.

 

On motion by Miss Smith that Miss Lena Corse act as head librarian. Motion carried.

 

On motion by Mrs. Van Ness that we extend a vote of thanks to Mr. Arnold Livers for the gift of the magazine The Outlook. Amended to read that a vote of thanks be extended to all who have given books and magazines to library. Motion carried.

 

Mrs. Kone was appt. to have charge of Reading Room Feb. 17.

 

Thanks to the Clubs who so kindly recommended the Collegeport Woman's Club as eligible to federate with the state Federation of Clubs.

Called to order by Pres.

 

In the absence of the sec. Miss Kern was appointed sec. Pro tem.

Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.

 

Motion was made by Mrs. Ross, sec. by Mrs. Holsworth that $3.25 be paid to Mrs. Hurd for in_____ into State Federation of Women's Clubs.

 

It was also agreed that am't of five cents to be paid for extra copies of yr. book taken by members.

 

On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, sec. Mrs. House, it was voted that Mrs. Heck be accepted as member of the Club.

 

Motion made and sec. that Mrs. Livers be accepted as member of the club. Membership to begin Mar. 28, 1912.

 

Mrs. Pine and Miss Halbert were appointed to take charge of reading room Sat. afternoon Mar. 30.

 

Mrs. W. H. Travis was appt. to take the place of Mrs. Elmer on program given Apr. 11.

 

The subject being Dietary Standards.

The Woman's Club met at Hotel Collegeport Apr. 11 / 12.

 

The Club was called to order by the President and in the absence of the secy Mrs. F. H. Jones was appointed secy pro tem. The Secretary's book not being available the reading of the minutes of previous meeting were deferred.

 

Pres. appointed Miss Dierlam to serve at the reading room Sat. afternoon Apr. 13 and Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Soekland to serve on Sat. afternoon Apr. 20. An invitation was read from a committee of the State Federation inviting the Woman's Club to send unofficially a representation to the meeting of the State Federation of Women's Clubs to be held at Waco, Texas in May. No action was taken. A letter was read from W. Doherty asst. general mgr. of the Frisco lines thanking the Club for its letter of appreciation which was read on the occasion of the visit of the Good Roads train here recently.

 

Mrs. Ross then took charge of the program for the afternoon and asked the Pres. to state for the benefit of the gentlemen a number of whom were present the meaning and use of Domestic Science which was very clearly done. Mrs. Kirkpatrick then read a pertinent article by Dr. Harvey W. Wiley former U. S. Pure Food Commissioner.

 

And Mrs. W. H. Travis gave a most interesting paper on Dietary Standards.

 

Mrs. Ross here entertained the Club with an excellent recipe for preserving a husband and Mrs. House and Mrs. Hurd closed the program with a most instructive lecture upon the proper combination of food read by Mrs. House and illustrated by a very attractive exhibit of the different articles of food presided over and explained by Mrs. Hurd.

The Woman's Club met at the Hotel Apr. 25, 1912.

 

Called to order by Pres. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

 

A communication was read from Mrs. Hetty Curry assuring the Collegeport Woman's Club a cordial welcome in the State Federation of Women's Clubs.

 

Mrs. Hurd stated that the entertainment to be given by the educational department of the Club was indefinitely postponed.

 

The Pres. spoke of celebrating Collegeport Day May 25. Suggestions were made by Mesdames Hansel, Goodman, Jones and House.

 

On motion by Mrs. House it was voted that the Woman's Club take up the matter of celebrating May 25.

 

On motion by Mrs. Hansel, sec. by Mrs. Van Ness that the Club make definite arrangements for celebration at the meeting May 9.

 

The Pres. appointed Mrs. Jones and Mrs. House to take charge of reading room Sat. afternoon Apr. 27.

After the business was disposed of a most delightful program was given by the musical dept. of the Club under the leadership of Miss Grace Smith.

 

Mrs. Jones read an interesting paper on Schumann, Schubert and Chopin as exponents of the Romantic Schools.

The Woman's Club met at the Hotel May 9, 1912.

 

Called to order by the Pres. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

 

Suggestions were made concerning the celebration [of] Collegeport day and on motion by Mrs. Van Ness it was voted that arrangement be made for celebrating.

 

On motion by Mrs. House and sec. by Mrs. Van Ness that Mrs. Hurd act as chr. of Committee on Arrangements. Carried. Mrs. Hurd appointed Mesdames Van Ness, House, Corse, Judin, McCain, Ross, Jones and Herbage as members of said committee.

 

Mrs. House and Miss Shubring were appointed to take charge of reading room Sat. May 11. Miss Spence and Miss Judin Sat. May 18.

 

An interesting program was given under the Educational dept. of the Club.

 

Mrs. Hansel being absent Mrs. Hurd took charge of the program.

 

Mrs. Cone read a very instructive and interesting paper on Our Birds.

 

The Synopsis of the Bluebird read by Mrs. Jones was very enjoyable as well as interesting.

 

Owing to the threatening weather some who were on program were not present.

The Women's Club met at the Hotel May 23, 1912.

 

Called to order by Pres. Minutes of preceding meeting read and approved.

 

Owing to Sat. May 25 being date for Celebration it was decided to have the library opened from 1 - 2:30 P. M. with Miss Dierlam in charge.

 

Mrs. Kirkpatrick was appointed with the privilege of securing an assistant to take charge of reading room Sat. June 1st.

 

On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick seconded by Mrs. Goodman that Miss Agnes Spence be accepted as member of Woman's Club carried unanimously.

 

The program was in charge of the Domestic economy dept. of the Club with Mrs. Kirkpatrick as leader.

 

The subject being food and dieteties.

 

Mrs. Herbage read a paper on Milk and Its Products.

Mrs. Nelson read an interesting paper on Cereals and Their Products.

Mrs. Goodman an excellent paper on rice.

Mrs. Hurd gave a very interesting lecture on proper combination of food with an exhibit of meat, cereals, and milk telling of their value as articles of diet.

 

The business meeting of June 6 was postponed for 4 wks.

The Woman's Club met at the home of Mrs. Hurd June 20, 1912.

 

Called to order by Pres. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

 

Mrs. Judin was appointed to serve at the reading room June 22. Mrs. Pine and Miss Spence at June 29.

 

The Pres. urged that members of the club enter the literary contest given by the State Federation. Mrs. Goodman consented to enter as a contestant.

 

A letter was read by the sec'y from Mrs. Curry concerning the compilation of the history of Matagorda County.

 

On motion of Mrs. Hansel it was voted that the Club take up the matter of writing history of Matagorda Co. for State Federation.

 

Mrs. Goodman, Mrs. Jones, Miss Smith, Mrs. W. H. Travis with Mrs. Hurd as chr. of com. were appointed to do this work.

 

The following bills were presented and allowed and Treasurer instructed to pay the same $1.50 to Collegeport Chronicle for posters Collegeport Day, .45 to Yeamans Bros.

 

The program was in charge of the musical dept. of the Club with Mrs. Walter Culp as leader. And the following entertaining program was rendered.

The Woman's Club met at the home of the President Mrs. Hurd Sept. 12 at 8 P. M. The meeting being opened to those interested in public school work.

 

After the reading of the minutes the following matters of business was transacted.

 

Mrs. Judin appointed librarian for Sat. Sept. 14, Mrs. Evans, Sept. 21st.

 

The President called a meeting of the committee on Matagorda Co. history to meet Sept. 14 at reading room.

 

Motion made by Mrs. Ross that the amt. due on Domestic Science books $3.00 be paid to Mrs. Hurd  who had advanced that amt. in the absence of Mrs. House.

 

After the close of the business session a most excellent education program was given.

The Woman's Club met at reading room Sept. 26. Called to order by Pres.

 

Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

 

The names of Mrs. Woodhouse and Miss Ethel Spence were presented for membership.

 

On motion of Mrs. Van Ness, sec. by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, that Mrs. Woodhouse be accepted as a member of the Club, carried.

 

Motion made by Mrs. Culp that Miss Ethel Spence be accepted as member of the Club, carried.

 

Mrs. Kirkpatrick spoke of the need of revising the Constitution and by laws of the Club.

 

On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick it was voted that a com. of three be appointed to revise Constitution and report at the next meeting of the Club.

 

On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, sec. by Mrs. Corse, the Pres. appoint committee carried.

 

Mrs. Van Ness, Mrs. Kirkpatrick & Mrs. Pine were appointed members of said com.

 

The Pres. suggested that a com. be appointed to secure librarian for Sat. afternoon of each wk.

 

The sec'y was instructed to cast the vote for Mrs. Elmer to act as chairman of this com.

 

Mrs. Ross was appointed librarian for Sat. Sept. 28.

 

Mrs. Kirkpatrick offered her services as librarian during month of Oct.

 

The Pres. requested those that had entered the literary contest to send papers as soon as convenient to Mrs. O'Brien of the State Federation of Women's Clubs.

Called to order by the President. In the absence of the sec'y Mrs. Van Ness was appointed sec'y pro tem.

 

Minutes of preceding meeting read and approved.

 

Reading of Constitution.

 

Report of the committee on revision of Constitution.

Recommendations--That article II be read to the Club for consideration.

That the Third vice president be stricken from the Constitution.

That quorum of advisory board be changed from seven to five Article IV Sec. II.

That the regular annual meeting be held the last meeting in June Article V Sec II.

 

The above recommendations were discussed by Mesdames Pine, Goodman, Elmer & Travis.

 

Next meeting appointed for Hotel Collegeport Oct. 24.

 

On motion of Mrs. Kirkpatrick, sec. by Mrs. Pine it was voted to receive Miss Taylor as member of the Club.

 

The program on Domestic Science was in charge of Mrs. Ross.

Remarks on the entertainment School Days by the President and it was unanimously decided to make the price of admission 25c for adults and 15c for children under 12 yrs. of age.

Special meeting at the Reading Rooms Oct. 19. Called to order by President.

 

In the absence of the sec'y Mrs. Van Ness was appointed sec'y pro tem.

 

The President stated that the first object of the meeting was to consider the meeting at Fort Worth of the Federation of Women's Clubs.

 

On motion of Mrs. Clapp, sec. by Mrs. Elmer it was voted that our President be delegate to said meeting.

 

On motion of Mrs. Evans, sec. by Mrs. Elmer, it was voted that the expenses of a second delegate be paid by the club.

 

On motion of Mrs. Holsworth, sec. by Mrs. Goodman, Mrs. Woodhouse was nominated as delegate.

 

On motion of Mrs. Clapp, sec. by Mrs. Elmer, Mrs. Van Ness was nominated as delegate.

 

On motion of Mrs. Evans, seconded by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, Miss Spence was nominated as delegate.

 

Regarding the entertainment School Days on motion of Mrs. Ross, seconded by Mrs. Evans, it was voted to make the date Oct. 25.

 

A gift to the Reading Room the Pictorial Review, The Ladies World and the Modern Priscilla was made by Mesdames Holsworth, Woodhouse and Clapp.

 

On motion of Mrs. Kirkpatrick the meeting adjourned.

Minutes of preceding meeting read. Corrected to read that the refreshments served be paid for by the Club.

 

The names of Mrs. Gates, Miss Jones and Miss Bannister were presented for membership by Mrs. Kirkpatrick.

 

On motion of Mrs. Ross, sec. by Mrs. Elmer, it was voted to accept Mrs. Gates as member of the Club.

 

On motion of Mrs. Elmer, sec. by Mrs. Woodhouse, it was voted [to] accept Miss Jones as member of the Club.

 

On motion of Mrs. House, sec. by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, it was voted to accept Miss Bannister as member of the Club.

 

The President Mrs. Hurd read a portion of a letter from Mrs. Colquitt in regard to infections and contagious diseases asking Mrs. Hurd to act as chr. of committee to look after this matter in our town, also in selling Red Cross seals to obtain funds for improving health conditions.

 

On motion of Mrs. Van Ness, sec. by Mrs. Hansel, that this work be looked after and that Mrs. Hurd act as chr. of said com., carried unanimously.

The regular meeting of the Woman's Club met at the reading room Nov. 7, 1912. Called to order by Pres. Minutes of last meeting read and approved.

 

Mrs. Hurd spoke of this Anti Tuberculosis Ass'n telling something of its object and work.

 

Recommendations submitted to the Club by committee on revision of constitution were voted on.

Article II of constitution read by sec'y.

On motion by Mrs. Kone, seconded by Mrs. Hansel, that Article II of constitution remained unchanged, carried unanimously.

On motion by Mrs. Hansel, sec. by Mrs. Ross, it was voted that the office of Third Vice President be stricken from constitution.

On motion of Mrs. Elmer, sec. by Mrs. Evans, that the quorum of Advisory board consist of five members instead of seven.

On motion of Mrs. Hansel, sec. by Mrs. Elmer, that the regular annual meeting be held the last meeting in June, carried.

 

Mrs. Odom's name was presented for membership by Mrs. Judin. Mrs. Hull's name was presented for membership by Mrs. Kone.

 

On motion by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, sec. by Mrs. Travis, it was voted to receive Mrs. Odom as a member of the Club.

 

On motion of Mrs. Ross, sec. by Mrs. Pine, it was voted to receive Mrs. Hull as a member of the Club.

 

On motion by Mrs. Hansel a vote of thanks was extended to Mrs. Hurd for work she has done for the library. The program was in charge of Mrs. Hansel chr. of the educational dept.

 

The following excellent program was given each paper showing much thought and study.

 

Babyhood - Mrs. Walter Culp

School Life - Mrs. O. B. Kone

Social Environment - Mrs. Hurd

Marriage and Preparation For Motherhood - Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Pine

Nov. 21, 1912

 

In the absence of Mrs. Hurd the regular meeting of the Woman's Club was called to order by Mrs. Herbage at whose request Miss Taylor acted as sec'y pro tem.

 

Minutes of preceding meeting read and approved.

 

Mrs. Judin & Mrs. Hansel offered their services as librarians for Sat. Nov. 23 and Mrs. W. H. Travis Sat. Nov. 30.

 

In the absence of Mrs. House, Mrs. Ross took charge of the program.

 

The following program was given on subject of Domestic economy.

 

Special Diet - Mrs. Morris

Pure Food Laws and Their Extension - Mrs. Travis

 

On account of the absence of Mesdames Leach, Hoffhines and Merck the demonstration was not given and the Club adjourned to meet Dec. 5, 1912.

Dec. 5, 1912.

 

The regular meeting of the Woman's Club met at Hotel Collegeport. Meting called to order by the Pres.

 

In the absence of the secy Mrs. Evans acted as secy at request of Pres.

 

Mrs. Kone volunteered to look after the Library for months of Dec.

 

Committee appointed to select book for the Library. Mrs. Hansel, Mrs. Van Ness, Miss House, Mrs. Kone, Miss Ethel Spence and Miss Taylor.

 

The president asked the Ladies to stand while Mrs. Culp sang our National Hymn, all joined in chorus.

 

The reports of the delegates to the convention of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs was next in order.

 

Mrs. Woodhouse read an interesting paper on the Convention and the Trip closing with, The Object of Federating Women's Clubs.

 

Mrs. Hurd's report began with the opening address of the State Pres. and went through the flour days of the convention touching on the points of vital interest to both men and women.

 

Public Health, Social Purity, Conservation, Compulsory Education,
Charities and School Morals were some of the subjects touched upon in a capable way.

 

The pres. asked the members to stand through respect to Mrs. Jones, while the Secy penned resolutions of sympathy to Mrs. Jones whose home is saddened by the death of her father, Mr. Wickham.

 

The program was in charge of Mrs. Culp and Mrs. Van Ness.

Christmas Carol - by the children's choral class

Meeting adjourned to meet at Library Dec. 19-1912.

The program was in charge of Mrs. Hansel chr. of the educational dept.

 

The Future of Collegeport Public Library was ably discussed by Mrs. Hurd.

 

Paper - Life of Charles Dickens - written by Mrs. N. P. Knight - read by Mrs. Culp

 

Selections from Dickens' Christmas Carol read by Miss Taylor and Mrs. Van Ness.

 

Adjourned to meet at the home of Mrs. Hurd Jan. 2, 1913.
