Funeral services for John F. Raasch were held at 2 p. m. Saturday, March 15, in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Leslie E. Webb officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery. Born August 21, 1920, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he had been a resident of Palacios for approximately 20 years. A former member of the city council, he was general shop foreman at Alcoa’s Point Comfort operations. He died of a heart attack at his home early Thursday morning. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Athelyn Raasch of Palacios; his mother, Mrs. J. A. Norman of Milwaukee; two daughters, Mrs. Carol Woodland of Port Lavaca and Miss Deborah Raasch of Palacios; one sister, Mrs. Sylvia Dermain of Milwaukee and one grandson, Russell Tod Woodland of Port Lavaca.

Nema Radford of Markham, died May 29, 2004. She was born May 20, 1908 in Tacoma, Washington. She has been a resident of Matagorda County since 1950. A memorial service will be held at 6 p. m. Friday, June 4, 2004 at First Baptist Church in Markham. Survivors are: sons and daughters-in-law Bill and Jeannie Radford of Angleton, Charles and Gayle Radford of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, Ronald and Sherri Radford of Markham, and Stanley Radford, Jr. of Markham; 15 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren: and two great-great-great-grandchildren. Stanley C. Radford Jr., 74, of Markham, Texas, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2012. He was born October 22, 1937 in Willow Spring, Mo., to the late Stanley Sr. and Nema Faye Radford. He is survived by: his daughter, Sherry Lynn (husband Brad) Merwin of Van Vleck and son, David (fiancée Peggy) Radford of Markham; brothers, Ronnie (wife Sherri) Radford of Markham and Bill (wife Jeannie) Radford of Angleton; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Ramirez was born in Refugio, Texas, Thursday, December 13, 1956, to Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Ramirez and passed away Tuesday, April 7, 1998, in Bay City, Texas. His education was obtained at El Maton Elementary and Bay City High School. He graduated from high school in Pennsylvania. His military service included veteran of the United States Army. Survivors include his children, Craig T. Ramirez of Bay City, Jordanis M. McElroy-Ramirez, Annette M. McElroy-Ramirez, all of Pearland; his former wife, Glenda McElroy-Gabrielson and step-daughter, Andrea N. McElroy of Pearland. Also his father, Ruben Ramirez of Bay City, four sisters, Georgianne Edwards of Bay City, Judy Luchansky and Mary Ann Chaklos, both of Springboro, Pennsylvania and Alicia Ramirez of Nokomis, Florida. Also two brothers, Frank T. Ramirez of Kokomo, Indiana, and Victor T. Ramirez of Lafayette, Louisiana. Other survivors include his fiancé, Kimberly V. Virginia Adair Barker Rehak, 84, of Matagorda went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 30, 2012. She was born on November 25, 1927 in Eagle Lake, TX to the late Robert & Dora Stapleton Barker. Virginia is survived by her 3 daughters: Linda Bunda, Kathy Beach, and Deborah Trevino; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. Benjamin “B. B.” Rhodes, 89, of Blessing passed away November 6, 1995 at Matagorda House in Bay City. He was born December 29, 1905 in Blessing, Texas to Robert Hamilton and Mattie Blair Rhodes. He was a lifetime resident of Blessing and a member of the American Legion #649. He is survived by two brothers, L. L. “Brownie” Rhodes of Freeport and T. W. Rhodes of Diamondhead, Mississippi; by four nieces, Carolyn Rhodes, Valerie Malone, Geniveve Adams, and Jorene Aycock; and by one nephew, T. W. EL CAMPO - Mrs. Patsy (Pat) Jewel Richards entered heaven's gates
Friday morning, July 6, 2012 at the age of 86. She was born in
Palestine, Texas on September 7, 1925 to the late Howard Claybourn
and Judy Boyd-Claybourn, and later moved to Palacios. She graduated
from Palacios High School in 1943, and shortly after, met her
husband of 67 years, Joe E. Richards, also a Palacios High School
graduate. Joe and Pat met when he returned from Los Angeles,
California, to visit his family before entering Flight Instructor
School at Randolph Field in San Antonio at the onset of World War
II. They were married on September 11, 1944, at the First Baptist
Church of El Campo and moved to Alabama during World War II.
As a journalist, Pat wrote women's news in El Campo for the El Campo
News, The Citizen, and the El Campo Leader-News. Her columns "News"
and "About Town" focused on women's interests and social happenings.
Her radio program aired on Radio Station KULP three days a week.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Saturday for Mrs. Alla Locke Richardson, 90, of Blessing, who died Thursday at a rest home. Mrs. Richardson was born: Sept. 2, 1871 in McMinnville, Tenn. She had been a long time county resident, and a member of the First Christian Church. Rev. Tom Plumbley will officiate at the rites in Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, followed by interment in Hawley Cemetery. Funeral services for Dr. Gordon Eugene Richardson, 76, of Bay City are scheduled for 2 p. m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 1984, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Buford Finley of First United Methodist Church and the Rev. James E. Scott, Episcopal chaplain at the Seaman’s Center at the Port of Houston, officiating. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing and gravesite rites will be conducted under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 11. Dr. Richardson was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Bay City to Samuel Scott and Ella Leah Johnson Richardson and died Sept. 27, 1994, at his residence. A member of the Bay City Blackcat football team and graduate of Texas Tech University and Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, he practiced optometry in Brownfield and Lubbock during WWII and returned to Bay City to practice optometry from 1953 until his retirement in 1982. He holds the record for length of eye care in Bay City. He served in the 1852nd service command unit of the Medical Department of the Army during World War II. Active in the civic fraternal organizations, he was a 48-year member of the Lions Club and served as District Governor in 1975-1976. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award, held a life membership in the Bay City Lions Club, Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children, and was a past director of the Texas Lions Eye Bank. He was a member of the Bay City Lodge No. 865, A. F. and A. M. and a 32nd degree mason. He belonged to the Scottish Rite Bodies of Galveston, the York Bodies of Lubbock, and Arabia Temple Shrine of Houston. He was made Knight Commander Court of Honor in the Galveston Consistory in 1965, held a life membership and was a 48-year member of American Legion Post 11, a charter member of the Cradle of Texas Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, where he served as first registrar, a charter member of the Matagorda Chapter 35, Sons of the Republic of Texas, where he served as first historian and a charter member of the Matagorda County Genealogical Society. Survivors include his wife, Jean Wilkinson Richardson; two daughters, Donna Friedrich of Flower Mound and Jeanne and Jimmy Naiser of Bay City; a step-daughter, Virginia and David Chapman of Van Vleck; grandchildren, Stuart Falknor of College Station, Chelsea and Graeme Friedrich and Shelley and Jayme Naiser of Bay City; and step-grandsons, Mason Kapp and Joey Chapman of Van Vleck; a brother, Scott Richardson and his wife, Anne, of Bay City; two nieces and a father-in-law, Walter W. Jean Wilkinson Wales
Jean Wilkinson Wales passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at her residence after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Jean was born upstairs at Dr. B.L. Livengood’s Clinic at 2144 Ave. F in Bay City on March 21, 1935 to parents Walter William Jr. and Marjorie Jim Bruce Wilkinson. She was a 7th generation of the earliest pioneers of Matagorda County. Her maternal grandparents were the late James Arthur and Larena Mae Nolte Bruce, both natives of Matagorda. An interesting note was that Jean was a 52nd birthday gift to her grandmother Bruce. Her paternal grandparents were the late Walter William and Helen Lanssa Gossett Wilkinson, both natives of Belmont County, Ohio. The first 16 months of Jean’s life were spent in Collegeport. She was the last of the Wilkinson Family to live there. She and her parents moved to Bay City in July of 1936 where she lived the rest of her life. Mrs. Wales was educated in the Bay City schools and attended Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia and the University of Texas in 1949. She was one of the first Girl Scouts in Bay City to earn the coveted Curved Bar, the equivalent of the Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts. Mr. and Mrs. Wales met through Lionism. She had the distinction of being married to two Past District Governors of Lions District 2S4. They were supporters of the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas and their home contains many mementos of their travels to Portugal, Spain, The Rock of Gibraltar, England, France, Italy, Greece, the Greek Islands, Crete, and Egypt. Jean was a Charter Member of the Mary Ralph Marsh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a Charter and Life Member of the Matagorda County Genealogical Society. She was a Life Member of the Roger Williams Family Association of Providence, Rhode Island, the Belmont County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, and the Texas Lions Camp for Children in Kerrville, Texas. She was also a member of the James W. Fannin Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas where she served 8 years on the DRT Cradle Committee in Galveston. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 11, the Matagorda County Museum, the Victoria Preservation Inc., and the Refugio County Museum. Her grandson, Joseph Walter Chapman, a son in law, David Chapman, her husband, Dr. Gordon Eugene Richardson, and her parents, Walter and Marjorie Wilkinson and her grandparents, preceded Jean in death. Her survivors include her husband, Bill Bartlett Wales of Bay City, daughter, Virginia Chapman of Wimberley, grandson, Mason Allen Kapp of Wimberley, stepdaughter and husband Jeanne and Jimmie Naiser of League City, and stepdaughter, Charissa Lynn Wales of Montgomery, stepsons, William Bartlett Wales, and James Steven Wales both of Refugio. Step granddaughters, Dr. Shelley Hancock and husband John of San Antonio, and Jayme Leigh Naiser and fiancé Ryan Petersen of Pearland also survive her. Richardson died Friday in San Antonio, and was buried in Hawley Cemetery. She was born June 26, 1915 in Rosebud, West Virginia to the late Thurman and Olive Grace Bennett Wright. Mrs. Richardson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Markham, a longtime former resident of Blessing and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 40 years where she held all offices. She served as Justice of the Peace, Matagorda County, Precinct 4 for over eight years, having assumed the position after the death of her husband, Judge C. W. “Kirk” Richardson, who was elected for two terms. She was known by her friends and family as a loving, caring Christian woman and for the good food and great hospitality found in her home. Mrs. Richardson is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Joyce and Donald Morton of Pecos, Texas; Peggy and Bill Patterson of Whitesboro; sister, Naomi Mills of Akron, Ohio; two brothers, J. B. Wright of Maissilon, Ohio and Paul Wright of Akron, Ohio; and by 5 grandsons, 1 granddaughter and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years Lee C. McMichiel on Oct. 1, 1962, and her husband of 25 years Curtis W. Richardson, on Dec. 17, 1979; and by daughter, Elisabeth Brumley on Sept. 21, 1991. Arrangements are made with Taylor Bros. Affectionately known as “Granny” she was born June 15, 1905 in Burton, Tex. to the late John and Elizabeth Schultze Beckmann. She was raised in Tivoli and on Nov. 14, 1923 she married Robert Rickaway in Tivoli, then they moved to Blessing in 1941 where she spent the remainder of her years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blessing, and was very active in the Palacios Eastern Star for many years. Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Joy Rickaway of Brazoria, and Eugene and Marie Rickaway of Midfield; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert; her daughter, Doris Barber; grandson, Richard Rickaway; great grandson, Daniel Kimmel; sisters, Hermenia Thormahlen and Lorena Newmann; and by brothers, Charlie and Ruben Beckmann. RUTH HOLLAR RICKAWAY died peacefully in her sleep May 10, 2006, in Houston, Texas. She was affectionately known as Ruthie to many people and as Mimi to her precious grandchildren. Ruth was born July 9, 1923 in Howard County, Texas. She was raised in Gail (Borden County) by her parents Elmer and Tama Pratt Hollar. The oldest of five children, she excelled in school and played on a state championship basketball team. She attended Texas Women’s University for a time and eventually obtained an associate’s degree in Medical Technology. Ruth worked for many years for the V.A. Hospital in Houston and at Baylor College of Medicine as a histopathologist in immunology research. She was the first person in Houston to be trained to operate an electron microscope. Ruth had a zest for life and she could do ANYTHING! She was the consummate Renaissance woman and could cook a gourmet meal for 40 people, sew, knit, embroider, macramé and lay bricks. Ruthie was an avid gardener and could bring dead plants back to life. She took great pride in her yard and flower beds. Family was her biggest passion and she was the rock of her family. She loved genealogy and spent years researching her family tree. "Benjamin Frost - A Texan From Tennessee" is her published book and can be found in genealogy libraries across the country. She loved organizing and identifying old family pictures. One of her favorite things was to tell “tales” about her pioneering family in Borden County. Ruthie spent many, many weekends at her property on Lake Travis. She loved to work there - clearing brush, building steps, planting foliage. Her talent for teaching kids to water ski was widely heralded. Her heart filled with joy watching her children & nieces and nephews playing in the lake. In later years, she found the same joy watching her grandchildren there! Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Durwood Rickaway, her beloved daughter Tommie Ruth Diffey, her brother Frank Hollar and her sister Ruby Lois Patterson. She is survived by her children: daughter and son-in-law Dianne and Dale Ledet and son and daughter-in-law Darryl and Laurie Rickaway. Esther Rickaway, 91, of Gadsden, Alabama passed away March 26, 1996 at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama. She was born Oct 24, 1904 in Texas to Julius W. and Freida Schlitzkus Klaus. She had lived in Gadsden for 15 years, was a former resident of Blessing, and a member of the East Gadsden Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Merline R. “Penny” and Don Hollar of Gadsden, Alabama, by one sister, Ruth Carnes of Lolita, Texas, by one brother, Charlie Klaus of Lolita, Texas, by two grandchildren, Lorie Hollar of San Augustine, Florida and Wayne Hollar and his wife, Paula of Gadsden, Alabama and by two great grandsons, Wes and Zac Hollar of Gadsden, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil August Rickaway on Oct. 18, 1983. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a. m. Friday, March 29, 1996 at the First Baptist Church in Blessing with Rev. Funeral services for Mrs. Glenna Jean “Ginger” Rickaway of El Campo were held at the Palacios First United Methodist Church Tuesday, July 27, at 10 o’clock in the morning with the Rev. Tom Connolly officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery. Daughter of Mrs. F. C. Wynn of Palacios and the late J. N. “Buster” White, whose funeral in Wiggins, Miss. she returned from Saturday, she was born on December 9, 1948 in Palacios. A 1967 graduate of Palacios High School, she was killed early Sunday morning when the auto she was driving failed to negotiate a curve .1 of a mile east of El Campo and overturned three times. She was the only occupant in the car. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Lynn Rickaway; a son, Ronald Jr., both of El Campo; her mother, Mrs. Wynn; a sister, Mrs. M. D. Ellis of Houston and a brother, John N. White of Swansboro, N. C.

Burial will be at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Mr. Rickaway was born Jan. 28, 1941 in Bay City to Steve M. and Viola Herreth Rickaway and he died June 12, 1993 at the Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Blessing, the Masonic Lodge in Blessing, and Blessing Volunteer Fire Department. He was an officer of the Hawley Cemetery Association and was employed with Hoechst Celanese Plant in Bay City for the past 27 years where he was a shipping supervisor. He married Betty Fitzgerald July 16, 1960 and was a lifelong resident of Blessing. Survivors include his wife, Betty Rickaway of Blessing, two sons, Chris Rickaway of San Marcos and Kevin Rickaway of Blessing; his parents, Steve M. and Viola Rickaway; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Stella Ruth and Jay Coffman of Dickinson and Elaine and Henry Day of Blessing; a brother, Frank Rickaway of Blessing; three nieces, Lisa Day of Blessing, Jana Rickaway of Palacios and Kim Calhoun of Dickinson; a nephew, Randy Rickaway of Blessing; a great-niece, Randi Renee Rickaway of Blessing and a great-nephew, Cole Rickaway of Blessing. He retired from the Blessing Post Office after 36 years of service. An Air Force veteran of World War II, Mr. Rickaway was a member of the American Legion and a charter member of Blessing Cecil Lee Post 649. Survivors include his wife, Wanda M. Rickaway of Blessing; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald L. and Sandra K. Graveside services for James Ervin Robinson Jr., 34, of Houston will be held 11 a. m. Friday at Hawley Cemetery with the Rev. Peter Higgins officiating. Mr. Robinson was born Jan. 14, 1957, to James Ervin Robinson Sr. and Billie Jackson Robinson in Tucson, Ariz., and died Dec. 14, 1991, in Houston. Formerly of Bay City and Blessing, he lived in Houston for one year. He was also a member of the Catholic church. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Billie L. and E. R. Vacek of Blessing; his father, James Ervin Robinson Sr. of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a son, Brian Robinson of Port Orchard, Wash.; three sisters, Annette Robinson of Los Angeles, Calif., Laura Schlosser of Tulare, Calif., and Carol Cano of Blessing; and a brother, Michael Robinson of Hawthorne, Calif. Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Bell Robinson, age 75, of Bay City, will be held Thursday, August 8, at 11 a. m., at the Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Wednesday until 9 a. m. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Thursday from 10 to 11 a. m. at the church. She was born in Brazoria County, Texas, Friday, Jan. 21, 1921, to Charlie Holmes and Mattie Campbell Holmes, and passed away Saturday, August 23, 1996, at St. Luke Hospital in Houston, Texas. She was loved by her family as “Mama Jessie,” and was known by her friends as “Jessie Bell.” She was admired as a sweet person by all who met her, and was recognized as the neighbor on Duncan Street with the “porch family,” having creating an atmosphere of cheerfulness with those who stopped to visit. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Eretta Smith (& Cecil) of Dallas, and two sons and daughters-in-law, Wilson Hart (& Janet) of Bay City, and Charles Brown (& Judy) of Denver, Colorado. Also six grandchildren, Tony, Regina, Carmen, Eretta, Wilson, Jr. and Carlton; three nieces, Carmilla Ward, Carrie Thomas and Jessie Mae Williams. She leaves several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, a host of other relatives and many friends, which include her church family and her porch family. Active pallbearers will include George Reed, Jr., Willie Boone, Jr., Kenneth Young, Ira Edison, Randall Knapp, Harry Sauceda, Kevin Edison, Charles Spencer and Nelson Smith. Mr. Larry B. Robinson, Sr., 47, of Bay City, died at Herman Hospital in Houston on March 1. Survivors include: wife, Mrs. Doris Jean Robinson of Bay City; sons, Guy Robinson of Houston and Larry Robinson, Jr. of Bay City; daughters, Dianna Edison and Patricia Williams of Houston, Priscilla, Vernessa, Rhonda and Carman all of Bay City; two brothers and four sisters all of Houston; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the First Sacred Memorial Christian Church in Bay City on Wednesday, March 5 at 2:20 p. m. The Rev. H. S. Williams will officiate and interment will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. PALACIOS - Frances Rodriguez was born in Olivia, Texas on April 21,
1937 to Juan & Maria Perez and died on August 23, 2012 at the age of
75. She was raised in Palacios, Texas where she graduated from
Palacios High School in 1957 and married Maurilio Rodriguez on
August 21, 1958. They celebrated 54 years of marriage. Frances
worked for Economic Action Committee for over 15 years, South Texas
Nuclear Project for 2 years and St. Anthony's Catholic Church in
Palacios for 8 years before retiring in 2000. Frances had a passion
for God, family, and community.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Roesler, 92, of Kerrville, Tx. were held April 17, 1996 at Grime Funeral Chapel in Kerrville with Dr. Phil Tilden officiating. Interment was at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing, Tx. Mrs. Roesler was born Jan. 5, 1904 in Red Rock, Tx. She died April 15, 1996. A lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she was also very active in the VFW and received her 1200 hour pin for volunteer service at the VA hospital in Kerrville. Her volunteer group was called the Cooties. She was active in the Ladies Division of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Standford P. Ward of Kerrville and Stanley E. Ward of Garland, Tx.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred A. Roesler in 1978. Pallbearers were Page Epperson, Walter Decaluwe, Frank Gear, Eugene Schneider, Bill Rogers, Gil Moody, Dean Cardin and James Roberson.

PALACIOS—Gary Lynn Rogers, 45, of Palacios, died Sunday, April 26, 1998. He was born Dec. 19, 1952, in Bay City, to the late Otto Horace and Eugenia Alberta Schuelke Rogers. He was a farmer at Jenkins and Jenkins Farms and was a Baptist. Survivors: stepdaughter, Kathy Sykora of Caranchua Community; son, Christopher Allen Rogers of Blessing; sisters, Betty Koontz of Palacios, Willa Koontz of Victoria, Pat Mayo of Bryan, Kathy Miller of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Rita Cowart of Bay City; brothers Marshall Rogers of George West and Wayne Rogers of Rosharon; and one grandchild. James C. Rorig, M. D., passed away on February 24, 2012, after a short battle with cancer. James was born to Kurt and Helen Rorig on October 23, 1952, in Chicago Illinois. He is survived by: his parents; sons, Brian and Benjamin Rorig; and his sisters, Elizabeth Marxsen and Miriam Rorig Low. James attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of Illinois. Although medicine was his vocation and passion, he was a prolific painter and many of his works were exhibited. He was also a gardener and an enthusiastic fisherman. Eight years ago he moved to Bay City, where he loved his work with his patients and the community. He was passionate about serving those who could not otherwise afford medical care. His family is very grateful for the love, compassion and generosity shown by his many friends in Bay City. The family would like to thank Dr. Neret and the Legacy for the loving care of James during his short illness. The family held a celebration of life for James from 7 until 9 p.m., Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 1413 Avenue G. Elaine worked for the United States Postal Service as a postal clerk for 30 years in Port Lavaca. Elaine is survived by: her husband, Edward Ruddick, Sr. of Inez; daughter, Ginger Pullin and husband, Mark, of Victoria; sons, Ed Ruddick Jr. and wife, Theresa, of LaVernia, and Jerome Ruddick of Victoria; brother, Tom Huston and wife, Martha, of Wadsworth; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
