Funeral services for Arthur G. Smith, 76, of Bay City will be held 1 p. m. Thursday at Mother Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will be Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Green’s Mortuary and from noon to 1 p. m. Thursday at the church.

Mr. Smith was born March 13, 1916 in Bay City to Charlie G. and Laura Clay Smith and he died Sept. 20 1992 at Vencor Hospital in Houston.

He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia M. Smith; two sisters, Mildred and Jessie Goldsmith of Houston; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Woods of Dickerson and Rosie Williams of Freeport; five brothers-in-law, George and Vanderbilt Williams of Freeport, R. L. Williams of Bay City; Lloyd Williams of Hitchcock and Thurston Williams of Houston; an aunt, Elizabeth Clay of Houston; an aunt-in-law, Roosevelt Law of Houston; three nieces, Thelma Sneed of Bay City, Ernestine Livingston of Dallas and Lizzie M. Miller; a cousin, Amy Moore Young of Bay City and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Wells Clark, Willie Edison, George Fountain, J. T. Manning, John Walker and Sammie L. Wright. Honorary pallbearers are George Jr., James, Vanderbilt, Thurston, Michael, George and Lloyd Williams as well as the Mother Zion Usher Board and Layman’s Organization.

Arrangements are with Green’s Mortuary, Bay City.

Mrs. Anica Spiller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Page was born March 15, 1886 at the Thompson Plantation, Matagorda County, Texas.

She attended public school at Gainesmore, Texas.

At an early age she confessed Christ and was baptized by the late Rev. Anthony Martin and became a member of the Bethlehem Christian Church, Cedar Lake, Texas where she served as a faithful member until death.

She served as Worthy Patrol in the Progressive Order of Pilgrims. She was a member of the American Woodmen, an officer of the Christian Women Fellowship, and an active member of the Bethlehem Christian Church.

She departed this life Sunday, February 16, at 7:30 A. M. at the Matagorda General Hospital.

She leaves to mourn her passing a devoted daughter, Mrs. Phema Woodard; three brothers, Rev. R. H. Page, Dea. Thomas Page, Bro. Alex Page; one grandson, Roosevelt Law; two great grandchildren. She reared one child, Robert Earl Johnson, two step daughters, Mrs. Thelma Powell and Mrs. Nellie Brown, six step grand children, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers: Roosevelt Law, Robert Earl Johnson, Louis Page, Donald Page, Elmer Aikens, Dave Ward, Sidney Trahan, Hewitt Wiggins.

Honorary pallbearers: Christian Women Fellowship

Service: February 21, 1969, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Cedar Lane, Texas

Sunset is so beautiful to view, for we can see the reflections of God’s daily goodness. Floyd Spiller, Sr. was a part of God’s sunset on Saturday, May 24, 2008 when he departed this earthly life for his heavenly life.

He was born to the late Alex “Albright” Spiller and Maxie Carter Spiller on August 24, 1922 in Cedar Lane, Texas, Matagorda County.

Floyd received his high school diploma from Pilate Pointe High School in Kendleton, Texas. He later joined the United States Army and received an Honorable Discharge in 1944. From there, he wanted to further his education by attending Prairie View College in Prairie View, Texas. While there, he received his certification in Woodwork and met his future wife.

He enjoyed life to the fullest, especially after he gave his life to Christ. He wanted as much out of life as possible. Then in 1948, he moved to Bay City, Texas, where he united with the Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C.H. Brown, Sr. Later that year, he married his college sweetheart, Gladys Beller from Tamina, Texas. To this union the Lord blessed them with six children, Floyd, Jr., Patricia, Billy, Kenneth, Pamela, and Samuel.

Floyd was a hard worker and provided for his family physically as well as spiritually. He loved to fish and tell tall-tales about the ones that got away. His vegetable garden was the delight of his community. He was employed with the United States Postal services for 25 years. He was employed in God’s vineyard for over 85 years. He retired from his earthly job, but God retired him on Saturday, May 24, 2008, so he could start enjoying his rest in his new heavenly home. He was a dedicated hard worker in God’s vineyard. Floyd tried hard not to lean up on his own understanding but was willing to give God glory all the time regardless of the outcome.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Jimmy Samuel, John L., and Fred.

Floyd leaves to cherish his memories: his wife of 60 years, Gladys; six children, Floyd, Jr. (Willie Louise) of Killeen, Texas, Patricia Jackson (Earl) of Giddings, Texas, Billy (Christy) of Killeen, Kenneth (Pearly) of Richmond, Texas, Pamela King (Anthony) of Iraan, Texas, and Samuel (Carol) of Phoenix, Arizona; brother, Terry (Naomi) of Houston, Texas; sister, Minnie Ola Boxley of Houston; in-laws, Christine Spiller of Bay City, Lillie Spiller of Wichita, Kansas, Minnie Esther Austin (George) of Houston, Jennie V. Durham of St. Louise, Missouri, Leon Beller (Loretta) of Houston, and Alex Beller of California; god-sons, the Rev. Pleas R. Mayfield and Judge Aaron Green; 28 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Homegoing celebration will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the Mother Zion Baptist Church, Bay City where the Rev. Murray G. Martin is pastor. Services will be under the direction of Green’s Mortuary with final interment at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane, Texas.

Visitation will be at 3 until 8 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2008 in the chapel of Green’s Mortuary.
