Funeral services for Eula Mae Sidney Holmes, 88, of Los Angeles, California, were held Tuesday, October 10, 2000 at 10 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Los Angeles, California, with the Rev. Leroy I. Brown officiating. Services will be held for Mrs. Holmes on Saturday, October 14, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Lane, Texas, with the Rev. Steven Staten officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

Eula, the eldest of nine children, was born to Isaac and Julia Sidney on October 11, 1911 in Matagorda County. She received her elementary education from Mable Kennedy School in Cedar Lane. She then continued her training goals at Jack Yates High School of Houston and later received her degree in education from the Houston College in Houston. After receiving her degree she began her teaching career at Wadsworth and Buckner Prarie, Texas. Eula married the man of her dreams, Washington Holmes (affectionately called "Buddy") They moved to Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles, she taught in Los Angeles Unified School District for approximately 20 years until her retirement.

Eula remained active in maintaining an immaculate household, enjoyed her outdoor gardening, sewing, and would expertly exercise her culinary skills in baking various hot rolls, pound cakes, and tea cakes.

At her journey's end she leaves to cherish her memory, one aunt Lucretia Lewis of Van Vleck; four sisters, Dora Wade of Los Angeles, California, Carrie Burnett of Cedar Lane, Iver Johnson of Dallas, Joyce Hawkins of Houston; two brothers, Kermit Sidney and his wife Hattie of Los Angeles, CA and William Sidney of Cedar Lane; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Active pallbearers are Lenard Wade, Jr., Isaac Burnett, Anthony Banks, Alvin Johnson, Alvin Johnson, Jr., Nathan Bailey, Lawrence Burnett, William Sidney, Jr., Buster Sidney, Henry Sidney, Wayne Woodard, Alex Sidney, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers are Carlos Sidney, William Sidney, Alex Sidney, Sr., Roosevelt Green, Samuel Green, Murray Green.

Dr. Elvin Holt

September 25, 1945 - September 18, 2023

Homegoing celebration of life for Dr Elvin Holt, 77, of San Marcos formerly of Bay City, will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 3300 Ave F, Bay City, Texas 77414 where Dr. T. L. Richardson is Pastor and Rev. Austin Jones will be the Eulogist.  Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery ~ Cedar Lane, Texas

Public visitation will be 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, September 29, 2023 at Duncan Roberts Funeral Home Chapel.

Dr Elvin Holt ~ Professor Emeritus:

Elvin Holt Drive on the Round Rock Campus is named for Dr. Elvin Holt, Professor Emeritus. The first tenured Black professor in the Department of English, he taught from 1983 to 2020 and earned multiple teaching awards in his 37 years at Texas State. The street was named for him in honor of his work in multicultural curriculum development.

Dr. Elvin Holt, tenured Professor Emeritus in the Department of English (retired), joined the Southwest Texas State University (SWT) faculty in 1983, serving the SWT/Texas State University and greater San Marcos community for 37 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Prairie View A&M University, a master’s degree in English from Southwest Texas State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He was one of twenty professors selected to participate in SWT’s first yearlong Excellence in Teaching and Learning Seminar. Dr. Holt has received three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and he was named Professor of the Year by the Association of Black Students in 1989. He was selected as an Alpha Chi Favorite Professor in 2015. Dr. Holt received the Dean's Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009.

Dr. Holt’s research, publications, and conference presentations focused on African literature, African American literature and cultural studies, folklore, and children's literature. Also, he developed and taught courses in the Honors College. Dr. Holt was the first African American tenured professor in the Department of English. Additionally, he is co-editor of Acting Up and Getting Down: Plays by African American Texans and co-author of Stages of Struggle and Celebration: A Production History of Black Theatre in Texas (with Dr. Sandra Mayo).  Both books are available in the Alkek Library.

Dr. Holt has served both within his academic community and the larger community, including serving on numerous committees at the department, college, and university levels, as well as serving as a member of the Heritage Association of San Marcos, the San Marcos Historic Preservation Commission, Hays County Historical Commission, LBJ-MLK Crossroads Memorial Committee, and the San Marcos Sesquicentennial Commission. For several years, he served as a Sunday school teacher and brotherhood president for First Baptist Church (NBC), and he has served as secretary for the Pride of San Marcos Lodge No. 494 PHA for more than 30 years. Most notably he is an original board member and former secretary and past president of the Calaboose African American History Museum in San Marcos, Texas.

Ruth Jones Hunt

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Jones Hunt, age 88, of El Campo, will be held Friday, Oct. 25, 1996, at noon, at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 810 Palacios Street in El Campo, with Rev. E. Sanford officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane, at 3 p. m.

Visitation will be Thursday until 9 P. M. in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

She was born in Cedar Lane, Texas, Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1908, to Isaiah Jones and Nellie Campbell Jones, and passed away Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, at Diagnostic Hospital in Houston.

She was a member of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in El Campo, and a former member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Cedar Lane. Mrs. Hunt was instrumental in organizing the first choir in Shiloh.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Marilyn F. Lacey (& the Rev. Byrd
Lacey, Jr.), pastor of Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Houston. Also three granddaughters and grand-son-in-law, Cheryl Jones and Jacqueline Smith, both of Houston, and Kim Carter (& Attorney Huey P. Carter) of Crosby.

She also leaves six great-grandchildren, Nate’ Jones, Kaci Jones, Lacey Jones, Paris Carter, Erika Carter and Whitney Smith. Also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, and a family of friends.

Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Hunt, three sisters, Ella Jones Lee, Bertha Jones Hawkins and Maryland Jones Fields and two brothers, Matt Jones and Jack Jones.

Funeral services for Vinora Williams Jeffery, 87, of Houston will be Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Lane with the Rev. E.L. Carroll, officiating. Burial will be Shiloh Cemetery in Cedar Lane.

She was a member of Charity Missionary Baptist Church in Houston.

She is survived by: two sons, Alfred Jeffery (Ida), Phoenix, Arizona, the Rev. Arthur Jeffery II (Jessie), Lake Jackson; three daughters, Bessie Goodwin (John), Brazoria, Dorothy Jones, Freeport, Betty Carroll (Rev. E.L.), Houston, two brothers, Lonnie Williams, Brazoria, J.C. Williams (Marsha), Houston; fifteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Richard Alexander, Edward Carroll, J.C. Alexander, Samuel Goodwin, Garry Carroll, Arthur Jeffery III. Honorary pallbearers will be Milton Evans, Robert Bonner, David Williams, Daniel Williams, William Harriest, John Goodwin.

Visitation will be Friday, February 14, 2003 from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Dixon Funeral Home Chapel and at the church Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. only. There will be no viewing afterwards. A wake will also be held Friday at the chapel from 6 to 8 p.m.
