Marine Pfc. Esteban Trevino Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Esteban Trevino of Bay City, participated in operation “Meade River” in the Dodge City area 11 miles south of Da Nang, Vietnam. He is serving with the 1^st Marine Division, which conducted the operation to find enemy forces and destroy their capability to strike against the Da Nang area. This operation accounted for 6,025 enemy died.

A 21-year-old Matagorda County Marine who was scheduled to meet his wife in Hawaii next Tuesday for R&R leave has been killed in the Vietnam war. Marine Lance Cpl. Esteban A. Trevino, Jr. was killed in action Monday, the 18th Matagorda County son to die in the war.

Trevino's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Esteban A. Trevino of Bay City, were notified of the death Thursday morning.

The Marine Corps said Cpl. Trevino died from injuries received when a field mine exploded while the young Marine was serving as a point man on a combat operation. Trevino received wounds in the face and chest. He was treated for the wounds and received the Last Sacraments from a Catholic chaplain prior to his death.

Trevino served with the 2nd Platoon, Lima Co., 3rd Batallion, 5th Marines, with headquarters in Da Nang. He was trained in communications and had been serving with an artillery unit in the I Corps area.

Trevino was born in Corpus Christi, attended Bay City High School and graduated from high school and training at a Job Corps Center in Nebraska. He had been in the Marine Corps 13 months and reported to Vietnam in October.

He was wounded Nov. 30 in the right arm by a mortar round and received the Purple Heart.

Trevino was scheduled to leave Vietnam next Tuesday for R&R in Hawaii with his wife, Mrs. Anna Trevino of Port Isabel, Tex.

Funeral services will be held in Brownsville, pending the arrival of the body from Vietnam.

Trevino is survived by his wife, his parents, one sister, Lupe Trevino, and four brothers, Javier, Adam, Gary and David, all of Bay City. Cpl. Trevino was the Trevino's oldest child.

War Claims Brownsville Resident

Marine Lance Corporal Esteban A. Trevino Jr. of Brownsville was killed Monday by enemy fire while on a search and clear operation in the vicinity of Quant Nam, Vietnam, according to First Sgt. Jack Allerton of the U. S. Marine Recruiting Station Harlingen.

Cpl. Trevino was serving with the Third Battalion, 5th Marines, Lima Company at the time of his death. He had been in the Marines since April 1968 and in Vietnam since last October.

Survivors include his wife, Anna of Brownsville and temporarily residing in Port Isabel; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Esteban Trevino, of Bay City and formerly of Brownsville; a sister, Lupita; four brothers, Javier, Adan, Gary and David Trevino, all of Bay City and several aunts and uncles of Brownsville.

Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of the body.

Mass Set Today For War Victim

A special mass will be offered by Rev. Herbert Hillhok of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 7 p. m. today to honor Marine Lane Corporal Esteban A. Trevino Jr.

Cpl. Esteban Trevino

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p. m. Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for Lance Cpl. Esteban Angel Trevino Jr., 21, formerly of Brownsville, who died in Vietnam from injuries received when a mine exploded while he was serving a point man on a combat operation.

Trevino, son of Mr. and Mrs. Esteban A. Trevino of Bay City, was born in Corpus Christi, lived most of his life in Brownsville, attended Bay City school and last resided at 219 Houston Street in Port Isabel.

Besides his parents and wife, he is survived by a sister, Lupita Trevino; four brothers, Javier, Adan, Gary and David Trevino, all of Bay City; a grandmother, Mrs. Jovita T. Mendieta of Rio Hondo and several aunts and uncles.

Rosary will be recited at 9:30 p. m today at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home. Full military graveside honors will be conducted at the Buena Vista Burial Park Saturday.

September 2, 1926 - May 7, 2008

Mass of Christian burial for Ofelia Treviño, 81, of Lufkin will be celebrated Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Patrick Catholic Church with Reverend Eduardo Nevares, M.S. Celebrant, Reverend Victor Hamon, M.S., Reverend Jose J. Kannampuzha, M.S., Reverend Maurice Linehan, M.S, Reverend William Slight, M.S. and Reverend Paul Rainville, M.S. officiating. Homilist will be Deacon Gary Treviño. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Vigil services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Treviño was born September 2, 1926 in Brownsville, Texas to the late Paula (Lopez) and Angel Barbosa, and went home to meet her Jesus on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 in a local hospital.

Mrs. Treviño had resided in Lufkin 38 years and was a homemaker. She was a 38 year member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was a prayer warrior and member of the St. Patrick Prayer Group.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lupe and Gale Acosta of Central; sons and daughters-in-law, Javier and Tammy Treviño of Diboll, Adam and Gwen Treviño of Henderson and David and Donna Treviño of Lufkin; son, Reverend Mr. Gary Treviño of Lufkin; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Teresa Guerrero of Houston; brother and sister-in-law, Ernesto and Alicia Barbosa of Brownsville; brothers, Merado Barbosa and Antonio Barbosa, both of Brownsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Esteban Treviño, Sr.; and son, Esteban Treviño, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Acosta, Hector Acosta, Kurtis Acosta, Michael Treviño, Gary David Treviño and Matthew Treviño.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bryce Acosta and Powers Treviño.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice in the Pines Inpatient Unit, 116 South Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or the American Cancer Society, 212 Gene Samford Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904.

Mr. Trevino was born December 26, 1919 in Latina Ranch, Texas, and died Saturday, April 23, 2005 at his residence.

A former resident of Bay City and Brownsville, Mr. Trevino had resided in Lufkin for the past 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was retired from Texas Foundries. He was a member of the Crusillistas, Knights of Columbus, Eucharistic Ministers, Prayer Group, and had been a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church for 35 years.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ofelia Trevino of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Lupe and Gale Acosta of Central; sons and daughters-in-law, Javier and Tammy Trevino of Diboll, Adam and Gwen Trevino of Henderson and David and Donna Trevino of Lufkin; son, Reverend Mr. Gary Trevino of Lufkin; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Emilia Mendieta of California.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Josefina Trevino; son, Esteban Trevino, Jr.; brothers, Frank and Tomas; and sister, Josefina.

Pallbearers will be Hector Acosta, Kurtis Acosta, Michael Trevino, Matt Trevino, Gary David Trevino and Emilio Hernandez.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Queen of Peace Knights of Columbus.
