Descendants of Paul E. Fore

In the 1880 Census, Paul E. Fore was a Dry Goods Merchant in Keysville, Charlotte Co.,VA.

From John Hall, grandson of Howard G. Fore, in August 2000:

Paul Eldridge Fore was certainly an early entrepreneur. Everything he touched turned to money. His much restored (early) house is in Keysville. He was a frail man and unable to serve in the Confederate Army. This did not prevent him from serving as he worked for the duration in the quartermaster depot located in Danville. He had bought considerable acreage near Fort Mitchell along the tracks of the Richmond/Danville railroad. He held out great promise for the the future of Ft. Mitchell and built two houses opposite the depot. The one on the left had about 15 rooms to house the growing Fore family. The house on the right [later and now owned by a Hudson family/jgs] was built by Paul Fore in the high Victorian style and as a child I emember it covered with ornate "gingerbread" wood trim.

My grandfather Howard was station agent until the family moved to the Gregory homeplace. The freightroom of the depot has the initials of all the Fore sons carved into the woodwork. They were Fulton, Garland, Harold, Howard[error?] and Julian. Harold of course is the grandfather of Margie and Patsy. At some point in time a general store was built onto the right front of the Howard G. Fore home. All of the children were expected to work in the store as soon as they were old enough. My mother, Pauline, was working in the store when my father called on Howard G. Fore for the Oliver Farm Equipment Company in Richmond. He sold farm equipment, mostly plow points to Howard G. Fore and on these visits he met and courted my mother. He enlisted in the Army in South Boston where he was living and after serving in Texas and SC returned to marry her. In the meantime she had moved to Richmond where she had become a registered nurse.

Howard G. Fore had a bicycle built that ran on the rails. When the tracks were clear he and one or more of the children would ride over to Finneywood. I suppose there isn't much left there and I can't figure out what county that would be. [Note - adjoining Mecklenburg County/jgs]

Update: A 24 March 1887 article has surfaced in a c. 1940 issue of The Charlotte Gazette, p.4,

"Old Charlotte" column of articles that appeared "50 years ago." — Courtesy of Harvey Hudson. The article, headed "Destructive Fire" relates that on the morning of the 17th, "the large storehouse and dwelling of Paul E. Fore at Fort Mitchell was destroyed by fire." It went on to say that all goods, furniture and clothing were destroyed. There were some fifteen persons in the house who narrowly escaped, including the 80-year old mother of Mr. Fore. The fire was supposedly started by rats gnawing matches. (Note: The mother of Paul E. Fore was "Paulina," see 1850 Census, Charlotte Co., VA.)
