Granville Moody Post No 89 GAR

Granville Moody was born 2 Jan 1812 in Portland Maine and died 4 June 1887 in Jefferson, Iowa. He was a Methodist clergyman and was the Union officer in charge of Camp Chase during this time was Col. Granville Moody of the 74th OVI. From the same regiment Major Ballard was appointed to supervise the police of the camp, and Lt. William Armstrong was detailed as Post Adjutant. Sergeant Major Rodgers, of the 76th OVI, was appointed Sergeant Major of the Post. Col. Moody continued in command until June 25, when he was relieved at his own request and went to the field. Later he would be known as the Fighting Parson, after his heroic acts at the battle of Stones River.

SERVICES-Yesterday the M E Church in Bellevue, was filled by those who had assembled to listen to the memorial services of the Grand Army of the Republic under the auspices of Granville Moody Post No 89, Commander T F Beyland. Chaplin Naber stated that during the year just passed there had been no death in the membership of the Post. The then eulogized the fighting parson for whom the Post is named. Granville Moody, who left the ministry and recruited the Seventy-fourth Ohio Regiment and led it to the seat of war.

FINE SPEECH-A large crowd of public school pupils, city officials and residents general filled the Center st. High School in Bellevue this morning, the occasion being the presentation of a handsome Lincoln memorial tablet. This tablet made of bronze, is inscribed with Lincoln's memorial Gettysburg speech. Six little boys, garbed in soldier blue by the Moody Post No 89 GAR, took part in the impressive exercises.
Col. T H Beyland said: "Who among us is there to pay fitting and just tribute to the memory of the best, the greatest noblest American of his day to Abraham Lincoln? Born in humble obscurity in a log cabin in poverty, he taught himself the life of a backwoodsman, in the proud Old Commonwealth of Kentucky."
