Mansfield

Located just outside Petersburg in Dinwiddie County, Mansfield is one of the region’s most historically significant plantation homes. Built around 1750, the home reflects the architectural character and social structure of 18th-century Virginia. With its symmetrical five-bay facade and central-passage layout, Mansfield is a fine example of Georgian-style residential design adapted to the rural Southern landscape.

The plantation played an active role in the agricultural economy of colonial and early-American Virginia. Its construction and continued operation were supported by the labor of enslaved individuals, who worked the surrounding fields and contributed to the estate’s upkeep and productivity. Today, Mansfield stands as a reminder of the county’s complex and often difficult past.

The home remained largely intact for over two centuries and has been recognized for its historical value. In 1976, Mansfield was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also included in the Virginia Landmarks Register. These designations reflect its architectural importance and its role in the region’s cultural heritage.

Although privately owned and not regularly open to the public, Mansfield continues to be a subject of interest to historians, preservationists, and descendants of those connected to the land.
