SURNAME: Venable/Richardson/Kent/Clarke/Eades
DATE: 15 October 2002
NAME: shellkiwi@attbi.com

QUERY:
I am looking for more information regarding a William S. Venable that lived in Fluvanna county in the 1820s. I have a lot of information about William's life, but absolutely no information regarding who his parents were. Although I have been searching for years, I get nowhere. I do have some documents that provide interesting clues, but need some help making the links. Any help would be appreciated.

Sarah Richardson, widow of John Richardson, married Robert Kent in 1823. I have copies of a will she made in that same year, and an intent of marriage agreement made between her and Robert Kent a few months later. In both documents, she mentions William S. Venable and William L. Clarke as being executors/administrators. She leaves a large amount of property to both and to a Rebecca Collingsworth. Because William Venable and William Clarke are mentioned so many times and she leaves them land and slaves, I am assuming that they are all related. I am hoping that Sarah may be my key to finding William's parents. However, I have been unable to locate a maiden name or birthdate for Sarah. I do know that she died in 1831 (this is when her will was proven). I have also had no luck finding any information for her first husband, John Richardson. It seems like this family just dropped out of nowhere.

William S. Venable was born in Bath Co, VA (?) in 1804. He moved several times in his life, venturing through Kentucky, and dying in Illinois. He married Sarah Eades, daughter of Sheperd Eades, in Albemarle Co, VA.

I really would like to know who the parents are of his first wife, Sarah.

SURNAME: Weir/Mitchell
DATE: 22 June 2002
NAME:
paulacole@compuserve.com

QUERY:
The Manassas Virginia Museum owns and is researching a Civil War plantation
and plantation house called Liberia. The Liberia House still exists today
but needs much restoration and preservation.  Our  research also includes
the owners of the property.   This house was built in 1829 by William J.
Weir who married Harriet Blanden Mitchell.  Harriet was the daughter of
Priscilla Carter and Robert Mitchell.  This makes her  a grandaughter of
Robert "King" Carter.  The property  was given to her on her mothers death
and was originally part of the "King" Carter Cancer Plantation.  The house
was also headquarters to Genl PTG Beauregard during the first Battle of
Manassas and was visited by Abraham Lincoln.   This combination makes this
house and family very historically significant.

Here is our problem:   During the Battle of First Manassas the family
decided to abandon Liberia, however, local history records that the family
left trusted slaves in charge of protecting the house and packing up family
possessions.  The family withdrew and temporarily settled at a farm called
"Union Hall" in Fluvanna County.  Later during this same year (1861) the
family returned to Liberia.

Any guidance you might be able to give us as to the location of Union Hall
would be appreciated.  We are assuming that the property either belonged to
Harriet's family  or mutual friends.  Also,  could  you direct me to any
research centers in Fluvanna County that might contain papers relating to
any of the above.  I will be making several fact gathering trips to
Fluvanna in the next couple of months.
