GAR-Death is slowly reaping its toll in the ranks of the Civil War veterans of Campbell co. year by year, until there are but 80 GAR men in and about Newport. Grandville Moody Pot, Bellevue, has 22; Joe Hooker Post Dayton, 20, and William Nelson Post, Newport, 38. Confederate veterans are comparatively much smaller, there being about 60 Confederate veterans in the three cities.

Officials of the Nelson Post GAR, say there are many more old Union soldiers but they are too old to take part in the GAR posts. It is estimated there are about 150 Union veterans in the three communities.
