No Clues to Cause of Double Homicide
Two Men Killed In Blazing Shootout

Johnnie Lloyd           Raymond Petitt

Bay City police were busy Friday night at 10:23 investigating a double homicide that occurred at a local tavern at 1423 Matthews in Bay City.

According to police reports, they were called to a reported shooting at Ave. D and Matthews and upon arrival, found Johnnie Lloyd, 57, of Bay City lying in a pool of blood just 15 feet from the door. In efforts to revive Lloyd, police tried to find a pulse by touching his neck and wrist, but were unable to find one.

Judge D. B. Hinton was called to the scene and pronounced Lloyd dead at the scene. He later ordered an autopsy on Lloyd. The body was sent to Ben Taub Hospital in Houston for the procedure.

Another victim in the shoot-out, Raymond Pettie [Pettit] of Van Vleck was taken to the emergency room of Matagorda General Hospital where he was treated for gunshot wound in the lower right abdomen. He was pronounced dead on arrival by Judge Hinton at the hospital.

Johnny Revis of Van Vleck was also treated for a gunshot wound in the left arm which he received in the shoot-out between the two men.

Police are unsure at the present time what spurred the violence which left Lloyd with five bullet wounds in the head and left side. More details will be made available pending further investigation.

While on patrol early Saturday morning at Matagorda General Hospital, a Bay City patrolman saw a man trying to pull a small pistol out of his right rear pants pocket and hide it under his car seat. The man was identified as Charlie Burnett, Jr., of Van Vleck.

According to reports, he had come to the emergency room of the hospital because he had heard that his father-in-law had been shot and killed. His father-in-law was Johnny Lloyd who had been shot in a fracas at a local inn earlier that evening. The weapon Burnett was trying to conceal was a .25 caliber automatic pistol. He was arrested and taken to the sheriff’s office where his family later posted bond for his release.
