Please note: The wills that you will find posted on this website are transcriptions of transcriptions. Many, many different volunteers have labored to make these wills available to you. Most of the volunteers worked from scanned copies of old typed copies from the 1930s. The workers who typed the wills up during the depression era had no interest in genealogy. They needed a job. They made errors. Please remember to use these transcriptions as a guide. Always refer to the original document and your own interpretation of that original for your research.
In order to have obtained copies of the original documents, 25 - 50 cents per page would have been needed, as well as someone's time to visit the Sumter County Courthouse to go through all of the microfiche and make the copies.
Also note that on some of will transcriptions, that you will find here, the transcriber made efforts to correct spelling errors, especially the double ss that comes across in old handwritten documents as fs. Other transcribers left their transcription as they saw it in the 1930s typed version. I asked the volunteers to use their own judgement about spelling errors, as anyone wishing to use the wills for accurate documentation of their family tree, will of course obtain a copy of the original from the microfiche at the Sumter County Courthouse or from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia. Please be reminded that each new piece of information that one encounters must be researched and proved or disproved by weight of evidence. It is always best to consult the original material for verification.
